Title: Apple Car Play
Post by: Lump on 11 May 2019, 06:38
Forgive the question but I’m old and need help from you techie youngsters.
How do I get Apple Car Play to work?
I have an I-phone X, am using the Apple cable but I don’t get a message when I plug in.
Do I need something I need to pay for?

Morning Lump, what car do you have... mk7 or 7.5?

Cheers Andy. It’s a Mark 7.

Once your phone's plugged in, if you press the menu button on the head unit and then appconnect it should boot up for you - it might come up with a "data may be transferred" warning, just click ok and you should be good to go. If that doesn't work, we can try some other things.

Hi Lump. Car Play may not even be an option for you. It is only possible with the Discover 2 unit, which was introduced for MY16 cars. At that time Car Play was an option for around £100, however, if you wanted to add it after delivery, it cost over £200! So, first you need to ascertain which Nav system you have.

That's a really good point - hopefully the steps above will work or say it's not activated.

Is there a menu option for it in the MIB? Just go into the (function select you know where you find phone, media, radio etc) menu and see if you can find an option for carplay/mirrorlink/androidauto.

You don't need the phone plugged in to find it, its there, just try selecting it. If it says its not activated, you need to activate it at a dealer - by feeding them pound notes.

If the option isn't there at all, then you have a MIB unit before they had this feature available. 2015 Week 22 build onwards before you find it... so either a very late 15 plate or definitely a 65 onwards.

Ah, sadly when I connect phone and press AppConnect it tells me I need an activation code which is obtainable from the dealer. That sucks.
Car play would be nice but I don't really want to pay too much for it.
