Hi, I am looking at a 2 year GTI lease. Sadly, options seem really expensive on a lease. I am happy with the standard spec but one cheap option is the 90% rear window tints.
My preference is for the solid white 5 door.
Would you recommend the 90% tints on a white car over the 65%? Is 90% too dark and a bit chavy?
My inclination is to spec it but would appreciate others thoughts.
Thanks

I have 90% tints on my white GTI and it seemed like a no-brainer for me, it looks great and it’s also good from a security point of view because it’s so hard to see into the back.
-
65% standard is enough unless you're selling drugs
-
Tint! Look great and just set the car off so well. If they were expensive I’d not bother but such a cheap option. Had tints in my last 4 cars and wouldn’t be without them.

Haha. I agree. For me 65% was enough, and in keeping with the subtle styling the golf has always been about.

Dependent on the colour of the car 90% tints can make a car look more like a van as the front windows are not tinted the same as the daker tint rear windows.
It is all a case of personal preference really. I have had a hot hatch with dark tints in the past and it did end up looking like a van as the front windows were noticeably lighter than the almost black tint rear windows.
I am in the camp of not going for the Darker 90% tint windows as I find the 65% tint windows dark enough and more even in tint throughout the windows of the car.
-
I’d stick with the standard 65% tints.
Do the 90% tints impede rearward vision in certain conditions when using the rear view mirror or when reversing?
-
65% tints look more than dark enough to me. Spend the money on a good night out

This.
You can get away with it on white or silver - but due to UK regs not allowing front tints beyond a certain level it can just end up looking odd.

No brainer, 90% all the way.

Nope, but then again I’ve removed my rear wiper. I can rely on the side mirrors just fine

Don’t forget rear view camera is now standard too.

The reverse camera was a must have for me and it’s turned out to be so handy to have.

In certain lights, 65% tint looks much darker...

Damn you and your Tungsten! It always makes me have second thoughts on my Isaac Blue

I do miss my Indium as Tungsten is great but doesn't that look much different whether really clean, clean or just a bit dirty!

Exactly!

Well parked Jim. End space, right to edge of white line. Protect those doors!

Even at work with a company, leased car... it's just a habit!

My opinion FWIW.
Looks - totally subjective, some think it looks drug dealer, some think it's looks good. Each to their own.
Function - dark (90%+) tints are excellent if you have really young children/babies. I've had them specced on my two previous cars. But as the kids get older (normally when they hit 4 or 5) the dark tints can restrict visibility. I specifically didn't spec them on mine as my Son had said on my previous car that it was hard to see out (other cars, he's car mad!) as we were going along. I was worried the 65% would be too light, but having had the sunny days so far, I think the 65% is a good balance of keeping strong sun/UV out but keeping visibility high.
Or, to add another option to the mix.... back in 2016 I got a MK7 Match Edition for my then partner which we used for second car duties, nursery/shopping-kart etc. It didn't have any tints (it was a cheap lease deal from stock), so I bought the 5DR MK7 sunblind kit from VW...

... what I can tell you is it surpassed all my expectations, it was/is absolutely brilliant! Not only does the kit fit perfectly (it literally clips in in just a few minutes!), looks seamless, offers good sun/UV protection, but it also allows the rear windows to be used/open whilst fitted, and can be removed easily and used in another car or sold on at a later date.
I still haver the kit (removed it when the car went back at the end of the lease) and although I don't think I will use the rear screen blind, I might put the side blinds in when we're in the peak of summer and I'm taking my two kids around.
Part number is 5G0064365 and they're about £170.
:)

I had those sunblinds on my Mk7 gti pp. Totally agree you what you say. They are brilliant and the ability to still use the rear windows is great. They clip in really well too.

Takes me ages to find the ideal parking spot in car parks. Drives the wife mad.
-
That last post was to Jim ‘s last. Back to OP the other point i’d add is don’t be tempted to add extra tints just because it’s cheap. I remember considering it , partly because the extra cost was trivial .

Do you have a tint on your taillights or are those stock?

Horses and Courses, mines Indium Grey and IMO looks great with 90% tint, wife’s Polo Match also has 90% tint on a white car, looks nice. Last 2 cars were Discovery 3 & 4 with rear tints so didn’t want to change TBH.

90% for me. Looks better, provides greater privacy (when you're dealing drugs) and less glare from the police's headlights when they're chasing you (dealing drugs again).
Stunning pic that, Jim. As an ex-bricky and Golf enthusiast it doesn't get much better than that.
Edit: looking at the picture again - the windows, pitch on the roof, oooofff! 😍

 It's some refurbed old buildings from 1800 that are apartments and we have a 3 storey office as part of it. Very typical of Sheffield city centre.

Not sure who you were asking, but mine is stock
