Title: Noise from rear above 60 mph
Post by: ftm2001 on 03 May 2019, 22:21
hello I've just bought a 16 plate GTI with 27,000 miles on.  I love the car but theres a noise from the rear above 60mph.  It sounds like an oscilating noise which gets louder the faster you go above 60mph.  Definitely not the exhaust as still occurs when clutch dipped.
Could this be the tyres or a bearing?  I'm assuming the bearing would be noisy at all speeds.

Sounds like it might be the tyres that’ve worn unevenly (in a stepped ‘sawtooth’ pattern) on the inside edge. I had this on a mk5 Golf and it did sound like a worn wheel bearing above a certain speed.

If it is the tyres, you’ll be able to feel the stepped tread pattern if you run your hand around the tread on the inside edge of the tyre. You may also be able to see it if it’s particularly bad.

Aye cheers I thought it might be that Icouldnt see anything obvious when I checked but i'll check rears tomorrow.  I'm sure I heard the same noise on a alfa I had once.

Sawtooth doesn't really happen on mk7s so it's more than likely bearings. Was a big problem on the mk5s as said but not on mk7s.

Every set I have had on the MK7 has got really noisy at 50% wear on the rears, 27k on rear bearings is nothing so doubt for a second it is them. Swap front to rear tyres to see if the noise disappears and you have your answer.

I had a rear bearing changed after 500 miles and was told that a bad batch of bearings had been used at the factory. How true that is I don't know but bearings can go at any time.
