Two minor things that bug me - does anyone else get this or know how to resolve?
1. Every time I get in the car, after driving for about 3 minutes a message pops up saying something along the lines of ‘Welcome to CarNet’ and my name. I have to press OK to get rid of it. Can the message be disabled without disabling CarNet features?
2. Occasionally when locking the car, the Active Display remains lit and won’t turn off. I’ve waited several minutes and it stays on. The only way I can get it to switch off is by unlocking the car, open and close the drivers door then lock it again. It’ll then switch off as normal after about 5 seconds. This has only happened three times since I’ve had the car on 6th March but does anyone else get this from time to time? And if I left if indefinitely would it eventually switch off?

Bugger. That’ll just be me then! :undecided:

Nope; I get no 2 sometimes, but possibly not quite the same.
Not even sure that it's not meant to do it? I've noticed since new that when it's dark outside and I get out and lock car, the AID will stay illuminated for quite a long time. I watched it once and it must have been 5 mins or more. Not sure if it does it every time though; I'll have a look later on.
-
Possibly - it is always dark, ie always in my garage where I’ve noticed it. I just assumed it wasn’t meant to do it as I could unlock and re-lock to make it go off.
Re CarNet it may be because I set up a user profile. Don’t know why as I’m the only person who ever drives it. I’ll delete it and see if it goes away.
-
Not seen the carnet one but I don't often have it connected to a hot spot. Might be a recent change to the carnet service.
The aid thing... Yes.
-
It’s not connected to a hotspot. It pops up on the main display when I’m using CarPlay. I’ll delete the user profile later.
-
I have the CarNet message pop up but not every time. When it does make an appearance sometimes it’s immediate, other times after 5 minutes or more. Weird.
Be keen to get rid once and for all!
-
I think it comes up as soon as it gets a signal from your phone either via USB or Bluetooth connection judging by the fact mine always appears just as I drive into signal range. I live in an area with no signal unless it’s over WIFI calling. 2 miles from my house has 3/4G.
-
Its got to be when carnet connects back over the internet hasn't it?
Maybe that's an Apple funny... I have only Android.
-
It’s definitely a VW dialog and it’s not coming from CarPlay. I think it’s just verifying it’s connected, which is fine except it throws you out of Waze or whatever else you’re in, to display the message and it won’t go away until you press OK.
I didn’t delete the profile as it said Set up a new owner so I didn’t want to pi55 about with it after the agro I had getting it to register in the first place. I only use it to see how much fuel I have got left without having to go down to the garage. The MPG stats are useful too.
Anyway, didn’t work out how to disable the confirmation so unless anyone knows, I’ll have to live with it.
I also had the non turning off AID again tonight. I was sitting in the car, ignition off but radio on. As I got out I noticed the AID showing the into graphic like when you first switch on. Then it showed the dials. I locked the car and it stayed on for several minutes so I unlocked it again, opened and closed the drivers door then locked it once more. This time it switched off after 10 seconds. I used the fob to lock it but have had the same using keyless.
Weird..! Not bothered as long as it doesn’t run my battery flat if I don’t happen to notice it stays on tho.
-
It'll shut down anyway after half an hour like the radio does.
-
You said about a profile? Which profile do you mean?
There are driver profiles (which come up on the control display of the AID when you start the car) which can be associated with keys and hold various settings, but I don't know of any other?
-
I think it’s the same thing. I initially thought it was a CarNet profile but don’t think that it is now.
-
I only get a "welcome Fred" message on the MFD on the AID when I turn the car on, it never comes up as a pop up on the MIB?
I know the sort you mean - one like the "fuel tank almost empty" message yes?

Number 1 is a MY19 thing.
MY19 cars have the built-in OTA connection for Car-net, that also talks to the app for the trip/location/security features. It annoys me too, because that message generally pops up at the most inconvenient moment. Having looked I don’t think there’s a way of switching off the pop up message unless you disconnect your car permanently from the Car-net system.
-
Oh CarNet now has its own permanent data connection.... I knew it was there for emergency call, but didn't know it worked for guide and inform too... makes sense I guess.

Yup it's now a 'security & service' pack...

I use it mainly for; journey details (MPG time etc) for the long journeys I do. Setting predefined area/parking position security alerts when the car is left anywhere for a long period of time (overnight for example). Checking the car is still locked and not been tampered with when I have left it in a public place and I am away from it.
It's handy, but the pop-up message is annoying.
-
Don’t get either problem with my MY19 car.
I use the app, which seems to be a lot more reliable than that OBD port dongle thing, but I’ve never had any screen messages about Car-Net.
The dash stays on for a short time after locking, but nothing unreasonable.
I don’t think I saw anything regarding this when I was setting everything up.

It’s this one, it appears a few mins after you’ve started your journey...

Yeah that’s the kiddie. As you say, it usually throws you out of Waze or whatever settings menu you are in, which is mildly irritating.
An update on the other issue whereby the Active Info Display doesn’t appear to switch off - I think I know when it happens. It seems to be when I go and sit in the car tinkering with the stereo or other settings and maybe switch the ignition on for a short time. Then when I get out and shut the door, I know the display will stay on if it shows the usual animation when you first get in. After locking, all interior lights go out, the red alarm light blinks but the AID stays on indefinitely. The longest I’ve left it is five minutes. I don’t think it’s ever done that when just getting in the car, driving somewhere and getting out & locking it. I think it’s because it quite literally doesn’t know whether I’m coming or going. Either way I can make it switch off after 30 seconds or so by unlocking, opening & closing the door then re-locking. Simply unlocking/relocking without opening the door causes it to stay on.
-
For what it's worth I also have both of these problems on a MY19 delivered 2 weeks ago.
The maximum the Active Info Display has stayed on for is 5 minutes but it still has me standing at the garage door waiting like an idiot for it to go off.
I've contacted the Car-Net help line about the message appearing and they have asked for more information about when it occurs but have unofficially suggested that it may be a legal requirement to show that Car-Net is in use. I've tried to establish when and under what circumstances the message appears but I have to agree with those who have posted here that it appears totally random. It certainly happens when my mobile is switched off so the only connection it's getting is from the VW built in SIM. The help line suggested that the problem might go away if I used a Bluetooth connection but I'm assuming that would require the use of the dongle I was given with the car via the VW Connect app and as far as I can see that does different things to Car-Net but I'm no techie!
Car would be perfect if the Car-Net problem gets fixed!
-
I’m the OP. The CarNet popup isn’t random, it pops up as soon as the onboard SIM makes a data connection on each new journey (or even a few minutes after starting the ignition). I believe it can be disabled by switching on privacy mode in CarNet - but I think you lose some features such as area alerts if you do that. As kmpowell has said, it’s an annoyance but one we just have to live with if we want the functionality on offer.
Re the AID not switching off, I can make it do it on demand by doing the following (this is how I happened to first notice it)
1. Unlock
2. Switch the radio on & listen/tinker for a few mins
3. Switch the radio off
4. Open drivers door and get out & close the door
5. Watch the display - if it does the red dial animation (like when you first get in after unlocking) and the shows the default speed dials, it will stay illuminated for ages.
On the other hand if you switch the ignition on/off or go for a drive then get out and lock it, the AID will display the leaving the car animation and switch off after 30 seconds. I think I’m just confusing it by getting in the car and not driving anywhere. Probably exposing a minor bug in the software.
I should add I don’t normally go and sit in the car at random! But I have done when first getting the car to get used to the tech and set a few bits up before getting on the road.
