Title: Snapped off wing mirror and dent in door
Post by: Will2018 on 25 April 2019, 21:22
I had a battle with a lamppost today in a carpark and lost! 100% my own fault. I was in my own world as I got into my car and forgot I had parked in a space very close to a lamppost. Didn't see it as I reversed out! Kicking myself!

Couple of questions. Can the metal arm welded back together or am I looking at a new power folding mirror? I've bookmarked one on eBay. Everything still works, puddle light, mirror adjistsmet and folding motor.

How much would I be looking at to get the dents pulled out of the door?

In the short term I've taped the mirror on and disabled power folding.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

New mirror...

No idea on the dent but it looks likely to need the door respraying and blending in to the adjoining panels. £4-500?

Thought so. I'm assuming the broken metal arm still attached to the car comes out when the door panel is removed? I'm not very mechanically minded unfortunatelty so will be getting a local garage to sort it out.

Think i'll order the one off ebay now. It's a listed as a MK7 GTI/GTD mirror so should be the folding one.

Make sure it's also heated and has a puddle light. And yes, take the door card off to remove and refit. Looks a bit fiddly to run the wires through in the right place but perhaps if you attach a wire to the ones that you pull out you can use that to pull the new ones back through.

Whilst this won’t help with your mirror, it may help with your dent. A pizza delivery mood reversed into the side of my car causing a crease/ dent. The insurance “approved” body shop talked about skimming, filling and respraying the damaged area plus the rear food and part of the roof. I was not happy with this and had a pointless dent repair done by Dent Devils. It is like new again and cost £168. They seem to have repaired dents as bad as yours. If you send a picture of your damage through their website they will let you know if they can do it and give you a quote. I was over the moon with the work!

+1 for DentDevils. I had a ding in the drivers door when the car was only 2 weeks old. As long as the paint isn’t cracked or chipped, they can put it right fairly easily. My dent was tiny but only cost £70 to put right. No fillers or anything, just bent/hammered back to perfection.

Must say that's the neatest bit of taping up a mirror I've ever seen! I wouldn't even bother with a new one

Thanks for the replies guys. I decided to suck it up and get a brand new one fitted from VW as I was booked in next weekend anyway for a service. Even with the glass and plastic casing coming from my existing  mirror the price was still eye watering! I honestly don't know where they get the pricing from.

Got someone coming to look at paintless dent removal next week. I'll get the car booked in to the body shop when I'm properly off to sort out the scratches.

We live and learn.
