is spraying them as stupid an idea as i thought or can it actually be pulled off and look good?

Only one way to find out! If it looks naff you can get some more from the scrappy / egay.

You can get spray on fabric dye stuff, its worth a go if you have crappy grey low spec ones anyway :)
