Title: What exhaust system & remap to go for?
Post by: daveybrown1991 on 04 March 2019, 02:03
Hi Guys,

I'm looking at getting a Cat back exhaust system for my GTI, and get it remapped at the same time.
I'm not sure which exhaust to go for as I see online there area few different makes , also where to get the remap done.

I live down south but willing to travel. On my old S3 I had a Milltek and a remap done at AMD tuning near Dartford which i was happy with but it would be good to get any other recommendations/personal reviews on both exhaust systems and VW remap specialists that would be great

Thanks in advance

Dave

Depending how far South you are, Regal in Southampton are my local guys for VW stuff. They can map with APR and fit pretty much any hardware you want. Dont think they do Revo though, might need to pop up to London for SCC or AMD as you mentioned.

If I were you I'd stick with a Milltek.

I researched before I got mine and I couldn't be happier with it.

Also (although only if you've got a DSG) the cat back will give virtually zero gains and the only gains you'll have is from the map. If you've got a DSG I'd be tempted to get the full Turbo back exhaust and a stage 2 map instead.

If you're manual - your plan is spot on unless you want to upgrade the clutch too. Even if you go stage 1, make sure you get the low torque map.

I've been looking and speaking to BSR about there PPC remap - you get the unit to remap the car yourself which means you can put back to stock as well. £500 and around 300bhp. They are Swedish and one of the guys in here in Sweden has one on his 245 GTI.

I went for the Remus exhaust system and couldn't be happier.

Produces a lovely sound and some proven hp gains.

Remap wise I've gone for the Racingline OEM+ map, purchased last year taking advantage of the Black Friday offer. Yet to be installed as I want to upgrade the clutch first. Might go for a twincooler as well.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Yes my gti is manual, and I've read all the stuff about the clutches not handling the higher torque maps.
This is drawing me towards the offer awesome have for an APR stage one map and updated clutch install for £1.5k, only thing is it would mean driving a few hundred miles up to Manc, I'm near Southampton.
Has anyone done that deal, is it reasonable?

I've watched loads of videos on the exhausts and to be honest they all look and sound great. I personally prefer a raspier sound rather than a deep tone if anyone can point me in the direction of that type sounding system. I'm only looking at going stage 1 with a cat back....

Thanks again

Another thing, all the tips on the systems seem to be the same, like a sharp slash cut, which im not a massive fan of. Does anyone know a system that do an inward rolled tip? Or is a case of just changing the tips?

Have you thought of a custom system? That way you can chose exactly the tips you want. Some places might not be of the same quality though.

Where did you get your Remus from, I've just had a browse and they sound/look good. Can't find many places that sell them?

Also i noticed they do different set ups with regards to silencers, have you got a back box and no centre box?

If you want Revo, then JKM in Portsmouth is the place to go ( they have a rolling road if you want figures!) I'd personal go for BCS with the Turbo back so you have 3" all the way.

How much was the Racingline remap?

Do they need to see the car or is it remote like the bluefin?

Thanks

I purchased both the Racingline map and exhaust both from Ben @ Reimans Godstone.

Remus offer several different tips, which are simply bolted on. I've got the regular rolled stainless steel tips, but plan to purchase the carbon fibre one later this year. The Remus exhaust is a cat back and included a replacement front silencer which I swapped out for a straight pipe. I plan to put the silencer back on when and if I eventually opt for a downpipe and stage 2 map.

I purchased the Racingline OEM+ map from Ben @ Riemans Godstone in the black Friday sale last year, need to dig out the invoice but it was around £450 from memory.

I went with Racingline as Ben is only 2 minutes down the road from my office. I've also had the map tweaked for switchable 'pops and crackles'. My original map and can be easily re-installed for when my car goes back to VW for a service. Normally I wouldn't bother going back to the main dealer for a service (prefer to use a specialist) but I got two free services when I bought the car.

But you haven't had the map installed yet? So you wouldn't know of what the dealer might see when the car goes into VW as 'stock'?

It is a shame that the Racing Line stuff isn't approved like Ford/Mountune upgrades.

Go and speak with Awesome GTI if you're in Manchester.  They're APR but have all the gear and a great workshop for fitting.

Apr maids are about £700 which is mental

Does a map get rid of the throttle pedal lag on the mk7?

Thanks, I'm half hour from Soton so they sound ideal, do you get all your servicing done there too?

Akrapovic is the only exhaust I'd consider. Cost a few quid though.

Unicorn Developmens get a few shouts on various forums. Considerably cheaper than APR and Revo too.

I will do once my warranty runs out (if I keep the car that long though)

Decent guys and have loads of time to chat through stuff if you want. They will dyno before and after the map to show you the results.

Also check out the supercharged Hurucan whilst your waiting around

Yep, £1700 for pre FL and more after as you can't just have a slip on so have the downpipe and cat so about £3600. Iy's a a hell of lot and not much point unless you are tuning the car further. Remus sound great on the GTI for more reasonable money.

I tried to get an Akrapovic on mine, but sadly it's very complicated and not yet street legal for the 7.5 in the UK.

The new 7.5 products are now starting to appear, and the 'slip-on' is possible without the downpipe & link, but it's stupid loud and you lose power (and it causes ECU errors) due to back pressure. To cure this you have to use the downpipe & link kit, but then it breaks emission levels for road use, so isn't street legal in the UK. Fine for track, not yet ready for the road.

When it's ready for road use I'll be getting one, along with the APR SP3 remap. I think this is an ideal combination. The tuners I have spoken too are hoping all this will be ready by the end of the year, which from my side will also be when my engine is properly bedded in.
