Title: Data plug
Post by: buddfridge on 31 January 2019, 10:04
Picked up my19 gti pp last night  and the dealer has already attached the data plug, I have not down loaded an app yet. What are the pro's and cons ?

Little value and you are giving VW a big pile of data that they may or may not manage to keep secret?

Its just a way of dealers harassing you about services and anything else they might pick out of the data.

I had one, binned it.

I'm sure in the Mk8 this will be inbuilt along with a permanent GSM module that will transmit data 24x7... several other OEM's have it already.

Read the terms and conditions relating to what is logged as well as VW's ownership and use of the data.

Every time I go near a VW dealership, they're desperate for me to have one.

Very very little value above the normal Car-Net App.

I declined one. Less they know the better.

I actually trialled it for a while but it proved very little use to me so I binned it.

They left one on the seat on my last one when it was serviced. Got a bit excited to see what it did. Not a lot.

Can anyone clarify something regarding the app?  I read you can get it to switch on the heating in the car at a set time - is this true or does it require (a) optional extras and many £££ or (b) a separate SIM for the car, which is also many £££?

Depends if you have a gas multipoint boiler and tank plumbed into the car or not...

Lol..l I think I found the answer.  You need:

1)  Car-Net App Connect (£100 option, but standard on MY19 GTI's I believe - can anyone confirm?)
2)  Discovery Nav or Nav Pro infotainment (the former is standard on the GTI)
3)  The iPhone app (or Malwaredroid equivalent)

I don't think you can. How would it work?

Ah damn it - it’s the GTE not the GTI that has this feature.
