Title: 2014 gti oil leak
Post by: Rob_benton on 29 December 2018, 14:58
Hi

A 33,000 mile gti dsg I’m buying has a mist of oil on the sump. It’s not a major leak and there wasn’t any oil on the drive.
Is there any common problems with the engine I can ask the mechanic to check during its service before collection?
I can’t work out how to upload photos from my iPhone.

Thanks

Looking at photos on line, I see the sump plug is right next to most of the misting. Could this be the culprit?

Thanks

Looks very clean above so perhaps the sump plug and washer weren't renewed on the last service.

There’s no washer. It’s a 1 time use plastic sump plug opened and closed with a flathead screwdriver.

I’m hoping it’s the same plug used during 4 services !

Could be the main crank seal.

Or perhaps someone has topped up the oil without a funnel and dribbled a bit, and it's coated the sump? Hard to hit the filler from a full bottle of oil without a funnel.

Thanks for the suggestions.

My concern is it’s an evenly spread out film of oil so it’s been there a while to be spread around .

I’ll find out tomorrow.

Sorry, yes I went to see the car on a ramp and it was bone dry underneath 2 days later. My photo I took did look like it was oil.
All I can do is keep an eye on it. Ill have a warranty direct warranty anyway.

About to go and pick the car up from the seller.

Thanks

I’d check the Warranty Direct terms and conditions as not all oil leaks are covered; page 16/17 in the policy document under ‘what is not insured’ - exclusion number 18.

Well spotted. I couldn’t find that. Thanks
