This is a picture of the next audi in car setup:

The MIB looks very much like the current VW one, but if you look below... all those heater controls are gone and replaced with another touch screen.
I'm not sure anyone really wants that, apart from VAG who will no doubt be thinking its cheaper than a load of manual switches. The current Mk7.5 already has the software ability to control those things, just actuated with physical switches.
Definitely on the cards for the Mk8
-
Prefer a physical switch, my friends car has gesture control and he is forever waving his hand around to change track or adjust volume. Prefer just to use my thumb on the wheel.
-
Gesture control on my Mk7.5 navpro latest about a day when i got it. Turned off, not coming back on.
I like tech, but that is pants.
-
I prefer a proper switch too, multiple screens is just built in obsolesence. Touch screens are a pain on the move and dangerous as you have to look at it, stupid idea. Saw this come up today - https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/105489/highways-england-chief-questions-safety-of-in-car-touchscreens - so it's not just me that thinks so. I admit to being a bit of a luddite but if new tech has a genuine use and benefit, I'm all for it
-
Don't worry, they will be taking the steering wheel away soon
-
Yep all digital interior is confirmed for Mk8 sadly
-
The new 911 has lost all its proper switches and watched a review from Henry Catchpole (formerly of evo) and he commented it was a shame and makes it harder to change things.
I drove a well specced RR Velar recently for 5 days or so and whilst the new touch screen interior is high tech, doing a simple thing like putting on the heated seats was not straight forward and required several presses and then a dial turn. Would imagine you’d get used to but getting rid of buttons makes things harder but it’s how it’s all going. Don’t even think you get an actually manual button of any sort in a Tesla.

Definitely something to do if stationary in traffic or stopped!
-
If the mk8 has all touch screen controls, I've purchased my last Golf.

My favourite thing to do when stopped in my Mk7.5 (no... not that pervs!) is to take a microfiber cloth and polish the bloody fingerprints off of the NavPro... I'd imagine in a Mk8, it will take me longer.

Just follow my lead, let the dust build up then you can't see the fingerprints on the screen

Snap! Best things ever, microfibre towels.

Agree 100% Watts. Form over function, with little regard to safety as a result of driver distraction from using these touchscreens to make simple changes such as cabin temperature.
I dread to think what VW would charge to replace the touchscreens / repair the functions when they stop working when the car’s out of warranty.
Need to order my new Polo GTI+ soon then, as it still has conventional heating and ventilation controls.
-
Perhaps they will offer a steam driven cockpit as an optional extra on the Mk 8..... I do hate those fingerprints.

Not that much different to playing with your mobile phone then.

I assumed that most Audis had touchscreen controls for most things already. Indicators seem be hidden in sub-menus...
-
Does anyone actually dislike buttons and switches? I guess it might cost the manufacturers less in tooling for all the switches and their moving parts but who really wants to be faffing about with touchscreen just to turn the fan on and adjust airflow.
A good point was made about being distracted, I still see people on their phones this kind of tech especially for the older generation no offence to them will mean more distracted drivers on the road

My 2018 A4 has non-touch screen with a scroll wheel mounted in front of the gear shifter to make selections. I really like it, much easier to use than the Golf touch screen - I once took 7 attempts to press one letter key in the Golf as its just very difficult to accurately hit a spot on a screen in a moving car. Do the people that design these things ever actually use them?

Tens of millions of iPads have more or less killed the home desktop/laptop PC for Mr and Mrs Average.
The world has embraced fingerprints and the touchscreen.
Give me proper buttons any day, especially in a car.
And proper dials and gauges.

I know what you mean. I still find my laptop easier to operate than my tablet, and generally prefer it in all aspects except portability.
Although I am now rather fond of the AID, that I was initially indifferent about. Although it is sometimes a little laggy first thing on a cold morning.
-
Maybe Skoda and Seat will still have switches?

I suspect that they do, but ultimately they are over-ruled by someone else - probably someone else with a spreadsheet in their hand.
That's how my job goes - we tell them not to do things and they do it anyone because of "cost".

Drove a Volvo XC40 recently with very impressive tech and few manual switches. Everything can be done via the screen, but also via voice control that appeared to work as intended.

Voice control would be OK as an alternative to manual switches, provided it works as intended and the system can understand different regional accents.
Without voice control, the prospect of potentially having to navigate through menus and sub menus for simple functions such as changing the cabin temperature or direction of airflow while on the move is a bit scary, and dangerous in my opinion. Even if it’s not necessary to navigate different menus and sub menus, hitting the screen in the right location to make the desired change while on the move isn’t anywhere near as safe or easy and pushing a button or turning a knob, which can usually be done without diverting your eyes from the road.
I’m not a technophobe, but I’d take conventional heating and ventilation controls any time over a touch screen for these functions.
