Title: Tyres! Specifically winter ones...
Post by: MrJollygood on 22 November 2018, 17:32
So after two months of glorious sunshine in South America I've arrived home to freezing conditions and lots of snow / rain predicted. Short of quitting work and moving to somewhere sunnier, I've decided that I might take the hit and get some winter tyres for the golf (2013 Mk7 Gti PP)

I rang my local tyre place who I've used for a while now and all they could offer in winter tyres were Zeta Antartica 5's at £77 a corner fitted (never heard of them, reviews aren't great or Falken HS01's at £114 each (again, not great reviews)

They did offer a whole heap of 'all weather' tyres - I'd always thought these were a worst of both worlds solution but maybe my thinking is outdated? The Gti is an all-round, all-weather, all-situations type of car - do I bin my current summer tyres and invest in some all weather ones? Let's face it the UK is mostly rainy and cold...

I've had  search around on the forums but can't find many recommendations - anyone have any thoughts on good winter tyres / all rounders?

Thanks!

Greig

There's 4 pages of discussion around this if you look further down the list of topics titled "Michelin Crossclimate".

Personally I'd go for winter tyres. I've had Nokian on previous cars which have good reviews. I actually won't be running winter tyres on the Golf this year as I plan on using my little run around in the bad weather.

Thanks guys - I've been reading around but still a bit confused. I see that as I have the PP 16" steelies are out of the question...

My thinking is that as we get little snow here in the south then full-on winter tyres are a bit overkill and perhaps an all-weather tyre is a good choice...or am I wrong?

17s will just about work with the PP brakes. As to what type of tyres, I'm not even a novice let alone an expert but I'd go for proper winter tyres as if it did snow hard I'd be pretty pi$$ed off if the all weather tyres couldn't cope. And just because it hasn't snowed down south much for a few years doesn't mean it won't....

We got snow twice this year, I had an old Mk5 diesel then adn was pretty much housebound due to the budget tyres...so perhaps you have a point. That said, I did get to avoid going to the office and work from home on those days so not all bad

I guess what I'm most interested in is a tyre that's built to cope with the low temperatures that we are already experiencing as well as the rain and ice that are inevitable during a British winter...

I plan to keep the standard 18" Austin wheels rather than buying a second set of aftermarket wheels (which seem to be either costly or ugly) so this seems to be limiting my choice of tyres slightly (the Austins are 225/40/18)

Just a thought though - would 17" Monza alloys from a Mk5 gti fit onto the Mk7? They seem available at a reasonable price and would allow a wider choice of winter rubber...?

I'm currently looking at winter tyres also. I currently have 18" Austins, but have ordered a 7.5 GTI P with 19" Brescias. I was thinking about buying a set of 18" alloys and fitting winter tyres so i can swap them over as i see fit. Not sure whether 2nd hand OEM alloys or reps from someone like CM and getting the tyres fitted...

I'm liking the idea of a set of 18" Monza alloys from a Mk5 Gti to put winter tyres on - can anyone confirm these will fit?

Yes the 18” Monza’s will fit, I run them as my winter wheels with Michelin Pilot Alpine tyres on my GTI PP.

I can confirm they fit - I run them myself

Thanks guys - seems like that might be a reasonably cheap way to get some extra winter wheels.

Still no more decided on tyre choice though...

I've been looking at the new Bridgestone A005 all weather tyre. It's marked with the snow symbol so can be used in the snow if it does actually snow. It seems to have gone under the radar a bit but it is a new tyre and it appears to be quiter and better on fuel than a full winter.

Might be a contender, reviews look quite favourable

I have seen a set of newly refurbed Audi A3 18" alloys with winter tyres fitted, but these have an offset of 54. Would this suit the Golf?

You need to consider the wheel width as well as the offset, so you can compare to your existing wheels. If you then put the details of your existing wheels and the Audi wheels into a calculator like the one on the ‘Will they fit’ website (link below), it’ll calculate any differences in clearance between the inner face of the wheel and the suspension strut, and the front face and the wheel arch edge.

I am currently trying to decide which winter tyre to get for my GTI PP. The 3 options I am considering are Continental TS850 P, Goodyear Ultragrip Performance Gen 1 and the new Verdestein Wintrac Pro.

I am NOT considering cheap winter tyres or all-season tyres. As I don't think either are suitable for a performance car.

The TS850 tyres on my wife's car are excellent in winter and predictable in warmer weather. It's no wonder some people recommend the newer TS860 as an all season tyre. So I'm leaning towards the TS850 P.

I'm not buying a second set of alloys. I'll just get the tyres swapped onto my stock alloys. I have tyre storage bags to transport and store the second set of tyres in.

Edit: check out the tyrereviews.co.uk website. There are plenty of reviews and some good videos on the subject too.

Edit 2: I would NEVER take advice from a tyre depot! I have had bad advice from several of them in the past.

Well in a slightly dramatic update to this thread, I've just had the girlfriend call to say she's driven into a kerb and burst both NS tyres. The car's been recovered to the nearest Kwikfit (not my choice, obviously) and I'll have to go tomorrow and make a decision on what tyres to get. Doesn't look like they stock A005's or Cross Climate's though so will likely need to spend all day ringing around tryng to find someone with them in stock who will deliver them to Kwik Fit. Fun times.

I was going to say that's a blow... Not good though, but do you really need winters in Maidenhead?

On a totally seperate note, and pictures of the Amazon? Always rather fancied one, how are you getting on with it, good fun?

Top punnage

Well, after reading lots of reviews and spending hours on tyrereviews.co.uk I came to the conclusion that full winters are probably overkill for down here in the south. We had snow last year but it's not exactly Scotland - really I want a tyre that will cope with the cold temperatures and rain that we get, then I'll swap over to a strictly summer tyre in 5 or 6 months time. The Michelin Cross-climates and the Bridgestone A005's get good reviews and seem like they would do the job well with the bonus that they'd work if we did get a flurry of snow like earlier this year.

The Amazon is good thanks -well, apart from the usual classic car problems and needing constant tinkering - oh and the overdrive stopped working recently...but otherwise lots of fun! She's a 1969 two-door coupe, 2.0l, twin su-carbs, fast road cam, light head work, lowered...will dig out some pics for you...

I have just fitted Kleber Krisalp HP3 225/45 R17 on Audi alloys to my Clubsport Ed40.

again I spent hours and hours looking at reviews and deciding on one tyre to change my mind but am happy with the Kleber.

Thanks Watts! Unfortunately she might be for sale in the New Year... :(

(I realise I've completely hijacked my own thread here...)

To bring things slightly back on topic - I've delayed my winter tyre choice and replaced the two flats with Michelin Asy 3's (what was on there before) until I can pick up a spare set of wheels - will have a look at the Klebers.

I've not heard of these, i'm still looking at all season, but like you said I keep changing my mind. . .

I’m very happy with the continental wintercontact ts 860 that I’ve just fitted to the Gti. I ran them on the Merc last winter and they were very good - they are a step up from the Nokian’s ive run for the last 4/5 winters
