Title: Creaking Suspenion
Post by: DarrenW on 16 November 2018, 22:08
Has anyone else had creaking noises from their suspension?

The right rear creaks when driving over speed bumps. The car has DCC fitted and it’s more noticeable in comfort mode.

Planning on taking it to the dealer but wanted to check if others have experienced this in case I get the “they all do that” response.

Been a tpi out for a long time regarding greasing of suspension bushes. Early Mk7s had leaking rear shocks.

Same as what mcmaddy has said really, nothing to worry about. Just take it into VW.

I have the same issue on my rear shocks and my dealer dismissed it.

It is now out of used car warranty, so I am thinking of fitting a pair of Bilsteins on it, there's a few threads about them on here curing the problems. However with DCC it is more involved, but then I don't have that.

I was googling the other day and found this website

Hi, My creaking got worse last couple of weeks. I looked at the suspension components and where I could see where they pivoted front and rear I sprayed with Silicon.

Result is no more creaking. I suspect it will be a temporary fix but if it works for a while then at least I know how to resolve.

If I didn't have DCC I'd be running with the Bilstein B12 kit. I had to replace one of my shocks a couple of months ago because it was leaking.

Are Bilstein B4s the cheapest OEM substitute still?

Only had mine just over 2 weeks, car has the Das welt warranty (2014 model)   took into dealers last week and they couldn’t find anything, rattles aren’t covered though - seems worse when cold or 1st thing in morning - oh and a £65 diagnostic charge for the pleasure - however the supplying dealer kindly paid that.
Never had a car that has rattled so much from rear - we do live down at the end of an old concrete lane that’s pretty poor but my wife’s and daughters cars are nice & quiet  - even my old Jeep Patriot wasn’t this bad.
Do the bilsteins make a massive difference?
Cheers

Phil

Hi Phil,

I believe they do, at least this guy thinks so, eliminates the problem entirely.

I have DCC and also have creaking from the front suspension, particularly over speed bumps in comfort setting.

I had this carried out by dealer in Jan 2017 - "Found creak on front lower wishbone bushes. Removed bushes and lubricated. Re-built road tested all OK".

It solved it for some time. But I have started to notice it's back again, so will probably have the fix done again at the next service.

This really pisses me off. First thing they say - "oh, we'll need to do a diagnostic check first"

Aye, cos a diagnostic check is going to find a rattle isn't it!

Take it back to the dealer you got it from, give them the keys, and tell them to give you a call when the problem has been resolved, then walk out.

With you having the car for less than 30 days aren't you entitled by law for them to either replace, repair or refund faulty goods?

Going to speak to supplying dealer - problem is I’m in Preston and he’s in Doncaster so not exactly on the doorstep- blooming frustrating to the point I’ve chosen to drive my daughters Corsa

Hi
Been in touch with supplying dealer, the salesman is going to speak to service dept Monday so we shall see. Neither supplying  dealer or my local appears to be aware of shock issue although in another thread I came across it suggested my local dealer fitted new shocks under warranty for same issue.
Cheers

After hitting a pot hole and blowing a tyre I had quite a few rattles and creaks from the front suspension.

In the end I had to replace the top mount (completely worn) and damper as bent.

So had the garage chuck in a new racingline engine mount and Superpro poly bushes all round and the car now drives like a dream.

Im resurrecting this, as my creaking suspension is getting worse and my question still remains, are Bilstein B4s the cheapest OEM substitute still, to cure the dreaded Mk7 rear suspension issue?

anyone?

Well, after hassling my local, dealer I eventually got them to fit a new set of dampers, just under 1k miles and rattle was back - TBH it was still there on the drive home from garage so I took the plunge and bought some Bilstein dampers .
Only fitted them today but on a quick test drive all is quiet, been out again over roads that would normally have me cringing and reaching for the volume button but all seems good.

When I took the Sachs off I could feel the play in the piston not good after only 1000 miles - the Bilstein piston actually looks a slightly larger diameter.

I’m hoping this has cured it - fingers crossed.

I paid around £90:for the pair, was quoted between £85-100 to fit but after watching a couple of videos on YouTube and taking off the wheels for an inspection decided to have a go - first one was a learning curve (plus trip to shop for an 18mm socket) so took around 45 mins (excluding the shopping trip), did the other in under 30mins - fairly easy job and I’m no mechanic .

Which Bilsteins?

And how is the ride compared to the stock Sachs dampers?

I fitted - Bilstein  B4 damper part number  19-230559.

Ride doesn’t seem to be any different just quiet.

Hi
Yes just the rear ones.

Thanks Phil.

I've found them online for £90 a pair, seems like a good value fix!

Just wondering if you went ahead with these?
So last week I fitted them and this weekend it was 2 new rear tyres and a 4 wheel alignment- it’s like having a new car , inner edges had worn quite badly- sounded like the wheel bearings where shot, alignment was quite a way out on back.
Wish  I done this months ago but was worried about voiding the warranty - to be fair when I had VW replace the old shocks under warranty the service manager admitted that the Bilstein ones are a better option!
Next job - creaking front suspension over speed bumps - still under warranty so hopefully my dealer will sort it.

no not yet, it's on the list.

Surely front suspension will be the same issue of crap OEM shocks?
Title: Re: Creaking Suspenion
Post by: mcmaddy on 24 July 2019, 09:08
Could be top mounts or lower suspension bushes or a combination of everything. I've got my DCC suspension GTi pp booked in for Friday to get top mounts possibly changed and my shocks aren't standard.

The creaking is likely to be the front wishbone bushes. I had mine done a few months back. The report back said they greased them up. I'm pretty sure they aligned the car too. It drove like new when I got it back and no creaking sounds since.

Whoa, you have non-standard dampers working with your DCC? Do tell...
