Title: Replacement alloy wheels
Post by: golfgtiingillingeast on 05 October 2018, 16:28
I have a 67 reg GTI pp in Tornado red. It has the original 19" Bresica alloys which look very nice, as we live out in the sticks in North Yorkshire I'm inclines to change the wheels to a gloss black or Graphite versions. Spoke to VW today regarding the price of 4 Dark Graphite Seville wheels with the red pin stripe. After picking myself off the floor after he quoted £2800 for four rims excluding tyres. It looks like it will have to be after market wheels. Can anybody suggest a good supplier and quality wheel to fit a Golf GTI ?

If you wanted to stick with VW alloys, you could consider the VW Rotary alloys - they’re an 18” wheel in anthracite grey. I had these on my mk6 GTD. they’re considerably cheaper than the price you’ve been quoted for the dark graphite Seville alloys (they’re advertised at £312.70 each here; http://www.volkswagenpartsuk.co.uk/parts/rotary-alloy-wheel/)

Brilliant, like them and at a price that makes the Seville's look very over prices.

Every alloy wheel from VW is over priced. Try looking away from VW and you'll get them a lot cheaper.

You can also get the 18 inch black Pretoria's for less than half the price of those Seville's

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRAND-NEW-GENUINE-VOLKSWAGEN-PRETORIA-18-ALLOY-WHEEL-SET-OF-4-GLOSS-BLACK/323109657825?hash=item4b3ad61ce1%3Ag%3AzgkAAOSwz5FamE8u&LH_ItemCondition=3

Or if you wanted to stick with 19's then these are available

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Audi-Seat-Skoda-Racingline-VWR-Wheels-8-5J-x19-ET45-5x112-Graphite-Grey/151538343594?hash=item2348639eaa:g:k9oAAOSwT2daPng9

Which is also available as an 18 inch wheel

I've seen them and they're not a bad price tbh. I would like some Pretorias but don't fancy shelling out ~£2k

And judging by the experience of some of the R owners with Pretorias over on VWROC forum, they seem quite susceptible to buckling if you’re unfortunate enough to hit a pothole (and not necessarily a big pothole). Expensive if you need to replace a damaged one at around £800 each!

I've had to replace 2 pretorias at £1500
Lovely looking wheels but not worth that kind of money.
I ended up buying winter wheels and tyres just to try and avoid any pothole disasters.

Not good, think I'll either go with Brescia or aftermarket now

Would the 18'' Pretoria look alike not be stronger than the 19'' wheel ?

Just look at any 7.5 gtd with the standard alloys.

The 7.5 GTD standard wheels are Seville's;- i.e. like the red pinstripe upgrade wheels for the GTi, only they're black with diamond cut face instead of anthracite with red pinstripe.
