Title: 2018 GTi engine whine on start up

Hi,

Just purchased a new 2018 golf gti, and have noticed that when the car has been sat up over the weekend, Monday morning start up we get this whine for a very short time after start up, almost like all the oil has drained into the sump and isn't on any internal components.

Does anyone else notice this?

Both my 2013 GTI PP and 2017 R have done / do this. I too was concerned at first but I’ve heard quite a few Audi’s do this too. Doubt it’s anything to worry about and likely a ‘feature’ of the E888 engine.

You might find somebody with more technical knowledge will comment and tell you what it is; probably a solenoid or something similar.

It's a cracking car, although i've only driven it for about 5 miles, and that was to fill it up, as the wife mainly uses it for work.

Yeah, I get it on my 2018 GTi PP too. Had it on my 2014 R as well. My wife's 1.4 Golf SE does it too.

must be a VW thing...

My previous car, a petrol V6 Audi, sounded great on start up and running, I've been underwhelmed by the GTI which sounds a bit like a bag of spanners being shaken in comparison. Other than that though, the GTI trumps it in everything else so I'm happy to keep rattling them tools :laugh:

Yep, my 2016 GTI PP does it too, just for a second or so.

Some sort of pump or servo actuating... which one, no idea.

Just to confirm my 2018 7.5 230 GTI does this.
