Title: Changing Mk4 Steering Wheel
Post by: Ivor Mk4 Turbo on 09 October 2005, 23:35
Hi, guys.

Has anybody done/know where i can view a fitting guide for the above.

Apparently, it's only 3 bolts, but I would like to 'see' it before I attempt it!

Cheers,

Keith

Hi,
I struggled with this one trying to change my steering wheel. Couldn't find a guide anywhere but got there in the end.
Their are two holes round the back of the steering wheel each side of the column, I used a screw driver and placed in the hole tweaked it a bit on each side and the air bag came out (its springs that hold it in place. Once the air bag was off it's one large torq bolt to undo.
A bit vague but may help you out.

I found the good old Haynes manual a great help when I took mine off to fit cruise control.  Easy step by step instructions and to be honest once you have done it you will wonder what all the fuss was about!  It really is easy.  Watch out for the torx nut once you have the air bag off, it is not actually a torx nut......I don't know the exact name but is a splined, star type nut.  I had to buy a proper tool to take it off (only about £4 for a set of 5 diffferent sizes though).  Also, make sure you disconnect your battery before you unplug the air bag and don't reconnect until you have refitted the air bag.  Failure to observe this simple step will result in your dashboard air bag light staying on and a fault code stored in your computer.  You wil then need someone with VAG COM to reset.  Hope this helps.....
