Title: Can you bring a Mk7.5 GTI PP DSG or Clubsport S to Bruntingthorpe on Thursday?
Post by: volkswizard on 09 July 2018, 09:46
I'm trying to find any owners of either;

GTI Clubsport S
or
MK7.5 GTI Performance DSG

that are willing to bring their cars to Bruntingthorpe on Thursday to record a video with for a company with a very big YouTube following. A similar video of theirs has had 8 million views.

What's required isn't too strenuous and will barely cause any wear and tear, insurance is provided while at the venue as is food, and fuel will be paid for.

Not sure on timings yet but best to allow all day.

A well known presenter will be there and available I am sure for photos etc in between the filming. I will be there too as I am supplying one of the cars.

Number plates can be obscured if required.

The venue is easy to get to, just off the M1 south of Leicester near Lutterworth and close to the M6/M1 intersection.

Thanks

Volkswizard, don't you have both of the exact cars on your forecourt for sale as we speak?

Surely a great marketing opportunity as, "What's required isn't too strenuous and will barely cause any wear and tear"

Good luck finding suitable cars!

Neither are taxed right now and I've only got one set of trade plates and one driver (me) but I will take my Clubsport S if I can get a GTI Performance stand in.

Hi Volkswizard

I live about 15 mins from Bruntingthorpe! Red '18 plate GTi Performance DSG.  By the time Thursday arrives, I should have reached the 1000 mile break in mileage aswell. Let me know if I can be of any use and I'll get it booked off work!

Cheers!

Be careful dude. Your new pride and joy have you seen the way these people thrash the cars on youtube. Let alone the stone chips youll pick up if they follow another car.

Obviously your choice but I wouldnt do this with my new pride and joy

A link to the 8 million hit video would give an idea to potential volunteers of what kind of treatment their cars would be undergoing.

It will most likely just be drag races, standing start and rolling, if their other videos are anything to go by.
I would check the "insurance is provided" bit, both own damage and third party as your own policy is unlikely to provide cover.
Look forward to watching the vids !

My lad did a supercar track day recently. We were told when we got there that we could pay an extra £25 to waive the potential £5000 excess should any damage be caused. According to them this was to protect against writing a wheel off running over a kerb, or scuffing the bumper if a cone got nudged, but I got the impression that staining from a squashed fly would result in a complete respray.

So yes, check what "insurance is provide" I also think it's a bit tight to just offer dinner and some fuel. 8 million youtube hits is going to bring in a fair chunk of revenue. I don't suppose this firm is short of a bob or two, but then they are ever likely to be if they get their props for free.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for responding, as juicetin says it's a simple standing start or rolling start,no following anyone and the cars are well spaced out left to right.

As soon as someone confirms they can take one of the two cars, I will take the other one (in this case if you take your GTI Performance, I will take my Clubsport S) so I expect zero damage to occur.

This venue is used for vmax events with extremely valuable supercars so it's safe and a good surface and the forecast is dry which takes any weather risk out of the equation.

I can't DM you directly for some reason but if you want to email me via andrew at volkswizard.co.uk then I can put you in touch and you can ask them directly about insurance etc.

Thanks again

Your comment is a bit unrelated to the original topic as you are talking about supercar experience insurance. Having met and chatted with one of the former owners of 6th Gear Experience they pay out of their own pocket for repairs and normally run at a loss for the year but the extra waiver contribute towards things. IIRC he said damage repairs were about £250k a year.

I have driven quite a few cars at Bruntingthorpe (not my Golf).

It is a big place, there is a lot of room to run cars and if you avoid running close to other cars you should avoid collision and stone chips.

One thing to consider on speed runs is the extent of the braking area as this can change depending on car storage. Braking at 150mph+ can take longer and more distance than you may be used to.

Best to agree beforehand, which way you will go if running against another car at speed just to avoid any confusion! I am sure the organisers will have this covered.

I would think the most likely cause of potential "damage" is likely to be down to tyre wear, but that will be determined by your own enthusiasm and how much fun you have.

Have a good day, look forward to the video.

Fair enough, makes sense.

Thanks for all the advice and feedback everyone!

I've since spoken with volkswizard and the producer of the company creating the film (anyone who's even remotely interested in cars and watches car related Youtube videos can pretty much guess who it is  ), and been fully assured that everything is as it's been mentioned.

Been assured that the track will be swept and no 'nose to tail' driving will be taking place, so that did put my mind at ease a little.

But hey, I didn't get myself behind the wheel of a GTi just to plod along on my 60 mile a day commute everyday. So if I do get the odd chip, at least I know I had a bloomin' fun time getting it!

So tomorrow the tank is getting brimmed with a full tank of V-Power, and I'm going to try and figure out how this launch control works now the cars past it's break in mileage!

And there's us talking about stone chips.... driving to work this morning - road ahead to myself - passing lorry - SMACK! - 50p sized stone chip on the windscreen 2 inches from the drivers side A-pillar. Pretty sure it'll be a new windscreen job

That ^   I've driven in several track days with quite a few close encounters, never got a  stone chip there since its a track and it's way better maintained than any public road. On the road though, no matter what I do and how much a distance I keep from lorries etc. I seem to collect 3-4 a year

Also, since all that this is about is a couple of standing and rolling start races (not a proper track-day) it doesn't even remotely classify as a "beating". It sounds like a good chance to compare your car against others in a safe, controlled environment, enjoy!

Saw the video today! It’s a shame you could have put a 230ps GTI in the mix too to see the difference off the line and rolling.

CarWow are one of my favourite YouTube channels, good going

1/4 mile is all about the launch and down to the skill of the driver, the rolling race put the 245ps back in its place

Easy, 290bhp  & DSG should be the fastest one to both 0-60 and 1/4 mile

Great video! I thought I could hear some DSG farts from Ryan's 7.5pp too unless it was the pops from the Clubsport S

It was a really good day! Great to meet Matt and the team and see what goes into the production of these videos. I couldn't believe the amount of effort and involvement actually goes into them!
Filming from 9am, and we didn't leave until 7:30pm. Granted they were also filming the Polo Gti, Fiesta ST, Mini, Yaris, and 208 GTi drag on the same day, but 10 hours to essentially get 10 mins total worth of footage puts it into perspective a little.

The results surprised us all really on the standing drag race, even with having a few takes to ensure the Clubsport S got a decent launch!
The farts though were not from mine i'm afraid.... that Clubsport S is by far the most "verbal" of the two!

All in all though a brilliant day, and big thanks to Andy (volkswizard) for reaching out on here to make it happen! And 0 stone chips... bonus!

I’d love to see a 7.5 vs 7.5 Performance both DSG. With the new 7 speed it could be very interesting.
