Title: Alchemy.....??
Post by: Silvadadi on 28 June 2018, 23:12
Have placed an order for a GTi but am struggling to understand dealer's quote taking into consideration discount and some hidden extras.  Their quoted base price (excl VAT) undercuts the quoted VW base price on the configurator and they've also quoted a discount amount.

The base price according to the configurator for a DSG PP is £31755 with either Jacara or Art Velours interior however it jumps to £32075 if I chose leather.......any ideas why? So in real terms leather is >£2k not the quoted £1750....??

The VW base price includes VED yet in the dealer quote I'm being charged this and also £500 delivery which they add vat to.

To be honest I didn't consider delivery fee when doing the deal - is the fee normal and obligatory?  Have no issue paying a first registration fee of £55 but can't see that I paid VED on my invoice for my GTD purchased 4 years ago so not sure if they're taking advantage.

It's given me a headache trying to work out why there is £680 discrepancy between our figures.....will have to pop back in.

Step 1: Tell your dealer to f**k off

Step 2: www.drivethedeal.co.uk

Step 3: Buy car for £26k

Would have been better to query before ordering, but in any case you may be looking into things a little too deeply. Prices ex VAT are an irrelevance unless you are VAT registered and I can't imagine you'll be able to swerve the delivery charge unless you fancy a trip to Germany to collect it.

Have a look at drivethedeal.com, if you're paying anywhere close to their price then i'd say that's more than fair.

Art velours interior is a £750 option over the standard Jacara.

As others have said, I'd suggest looking around more, vie Drive the Deal or CarWow. I used the latter and recommend it.
The discounts being offerred are clearly shown in % terms. When I last looked there was about 16% discount on a factory order, slightly less on cars available immediately.

Have just gone on the configurator and I agree with your base price but it jumps by £750 for art velours and £1750 for leather. No idea what the £500 charge is for so you'll have to ask them. Do you live somewhere unusual like the Channel Islands or the Hebredes?

Made me chuckle when I read this - thank you I might just do that although it may mean they hold onto my £500 deposit...

No South of England - I can live with the £500 delivery charge but why does VW add £320 to the base price of the car as well as charge £1750 for leather - thats what I was interested in knowing?

Was this for a Mk7.5?  If so when did you order and what spec?

Folks, I did my research before I went to the stealer and used the DTD and Carwow figures to negotiate.  So the spec I went for initially, which included art velours, was quoted at £28945 by DTD and £29395 through Carwow.  Previous dealings with DTD they were reluctant for me to pick up a car from the dealer and wanted to deliver it.  My OCD doesn't like this as I want to be the first to drive it so went with the Carwow price with a dealer close to me.  I then decided to change art velours to leather so you would think that this would just be an increase of £1000 for a total of £30395 but my total charge is for £31895 - which when you deduct delivery charge and first reg fee is a difference of £945!

Appreciate everyone's help/suggestions

Maybe leather seats can only be ordered in conjunction with something else, hence driving up base price.…. had that with heated front screen on my first mk7, which necessitated having advanced phone connection.

When I lived in €uro land I was going to buy a Golf direct from the Wolfsburg factory.
Because the EU regs do not allow factory gate sales VW has its own PDI centre a few km away where payment completed and the car is handed over.

But I still had to pay for delivery = €230.00.
