Just reading this on facebook. Is this true (as I'll need to fill up later this week), or a bit of scare mongering ?
"WARNING !!!! - Due to increase in temperatures in the coming days, please don't fill fuel tanks to the maximum volume. It may cause an explosion in the fuel tank. Please fill the tank no more than half full and allow space for air. This week, 5 explosion accidents have happened due to filling fuel tanks to the maximum. Don't just read this message and stop, let others and your family members who drive also know about it so they can avoid this mistake. Please DO SHARE THIS"
Supposedly this is fro the Motorway Police.
Surely this can't be right as people live in much warmer climates than us here in the UK and seem to do fine, and surely the vehicle manufacturers account for this in their design ?
-
LOL! Well, put it this way - everyone here in Aus fills their car to the brim and I've never heard of an explosion yet.
-
Ooh...you rebels you Aussies.....always up for a bit of danger ;D ;D
It's being shared like mad, but I've just noticed that the originator of the warning "Motorway Police", is based in Pakistan :D :D

I always thought there's a vent in the fuel tank to allow for expansion. Load of rollocks if you ask me.

also a hole in the cap 😉, but hey let’s not let the truth get in the way of a good story
-
Yes of course in the modern litigatious world in which we live a manufacturer such as VW would make a car which could explode from a simple mistake and not have any technical solution or a warning in the manual....
If you believe that, please, I am a crown prince of Nigeria who would like to give you millions of dollars, just supply your bank details...

It’s a known hoax.

Absolute loads of nonsense.
I ran a petrol 6 cylinder Landcruiser pickup in Venezuela for two years, temps often hit 40c.
I used to run the tank from full to empty many, many times per month driving to a from the mine I worked in.
The only danger was the local drivers and wildlife that wandered onto the road (crocodiles, anacondas, armadillos etc). And the vultures that feasted on the roadkill. I ended up with one of those embedded in my grill once, which will happen when you hit it doing over 100 km/h!
-
Load of crap!
-
If there is a modicum of truth in this, am sure the BBC will be letting us know in the weather forecast......
There is no issue with this in aircraft fuel tanks so I can't see it being a problem in a car.
-
The fuel tank has space built in for thermal expansion.
On older cars (like the mk3 Golf) there was a nipple in the fuel filler neck. If you pushed it you could fill that expansion area too (up to 10 litres after auto shut off), if you did that in the morning with very cold fuel and then left it in the sun at 40 degrees then maybe you'd get an issue.
Just filling it until the pistol shuts off and then putting another litre or two in you'll be absolutely fine.
Also don't forget; a UK heatwave barely makes spring in the rest of the world
-
 love it! Wonder how many will buy into this
-
According to the weather warnings we'll all be dead if we go outside anyway!
-
Just filled up, sh!te I'm dead

"on Facebook" - there's your answer.

First time I have attempted to upload a photo, so forgive me if this does not work.
I was taking a huge risk driving my internal combustion engine contraption yesterday!

Just had one of those wtf moments.... that Mk7 physical clocks looks really retro to me now!
Never thought that until now!
-
Yeah they look strange after 'Active Info'. I'm sure you'd get used to them again after a few weeks

Once years ago I filled up me BMW R1150GS to the brim first thing in the morning and rode home about half a mile. Left the bike in full sun for half an hour and when I went out the 22L tank was creaking loud. Opening the cap slowly to release the pressure it spewed petrol out all over the bike and much more than I expected. Good job it had cooled down a bit.

When in Africa filling up you can request a ramp to tilt the vehicle to get every last drop into the tank - only the neck of the filler would have air...
That said, I wouldn't try driving the Sahara in my Golf as it stands - Probably make the first 10 foot OK though..
-
I had a VW and a Citreon petrol cars stand in full sun with a high of 62C for several days and sold both several years later.
All modern cars have fuel breathers installed, even those from France.

BOOM! I personally don't think there is any truth/risk in this. Expansion with heat is a thing for sure but I'd be confident to fill it up myself. Luckily I drive diesel mostly and that is only flammable under fairly extreme pressure so I'm safe for now I think.
