Title: CarPlay installed today and not working.
Post by: st33ly on 08 June 2018, 23:27
Hey guys

Anyone got experience. I’ve had it complimentary installed at the dealers today on my MK7 CSS and the thing won’t fecking connect or recognise my phone. So I’ve not actually seen it working yet. I’ve google and methodically went through all the possibilities to no avail. Even tried the good ladies iPhone seven and it said the same thing. I’m going to phone the dealer tomorrow but thought I’d aske here first.

What am I doing wrong?

I've got mine working on my CSS. Do try a different lead including an official lead as  it seems to be a bit picky about these.

Also check if the USB connector works otherwise?

Just to be 100% sure, are you connecting your phone, via cable, to the usb socket in the front compartment behind the flap? Only way it will work.

The CarPlay on ours sometimes acts up and you need to forget the car on your phone and reconnect.  Then it should work fine.

Hi guys. Thanks for the replies. I’ve tried another official apple cable through the USB under the flap. I’ve reset my phone. Dissconnected it from car head unit and reconnected it. Dealer tech is phoning me on Monday morning but I’m hoping I don’t need to drive back as I’ve no time at all at the moment.

Oh and food for thought. The 19” Pretoria’s I’m thinking of doing a Matt Gt3 gold finish. Anyone be able to photo shop that on a white CSS for me?

Cheers.

Is the USB definitely working and charging the phone even if not connecting?

Hi dude yeah I've tried it and it charges both mine and the good ladies phones.
Still waiting for the engineer to call me.

Are you running a current version of IOS?

BTW google suggests this isn't uncommon....

IOS 11.4 is what my phone is running. Think that’s the most current version. I’ve ran out of ideas tbh.

Might be worth trying with the Bluetooth and wifi off. Just a thought.

So just an update. Was in today tech could not get it to connect either. Going to replace the USB port and take it from there. They need the car for three days which is fine. I’ll get a C Car. If it comes back with a mark on it I’ll be raging.

On another note. Wheels - new Porsche GT3 Matt gold colour?? Tell me your thoughts?

Depends on the colour of the car. IMO matt gold wheels look good on a black car, but I don’t like them on a white car.

Sorry, not for me, but it’s good that we don’t all like the same things, otherwise life would be boring. The car’s great though, and if the wheels were powder coated gunmetal / anthracite that would be a cool combination!

How much is CarPlay now?

How much is CarPlay now?

There’s a current discussion thread over on vwroc.com that suggests it costs around £245 to have App Connect activated. Not all MIB2 infotainment units are App Connect compatible.

Thanks for this. I'll give my dealer a call.

I agree that early ones weren't, but our OP has a CSS - that's last gasp Mk7/MIB2 and definitely will be compatible.

Yes, OP’s should be compatible, but we don’t know if forum member greencode has a compatible infotainment unit in his R; so I was alerting him to the possibility of incompatibility when he asked how much it cost to activate App Connect.

st33ly did you ever sort this? I’m having identical issues in my CSS. Thanks.

Yeah dude got it sorted. It was the USB connector that needed changed in the cubby hole central dash area. Once that was replaced it was perfect. Was annoyed at Cameron’s Perth for not checking it once installed. Took it to Edinburgh and they sorted it fine. And strangely enough one of the horn plugs became detached and popped out through the brake cooling vent. Hmmmm.

On this topic of car play. A mate has a 2016 mk7 and fancies CarPlay. Do you have to go to the dealer or does anyone know a coding guy. I remember on the 1series forum a guy could remote instal it for £99. Just wondered if anyone knew if it was possible?

Cheers

From everything I read when I was looking into it, it's not doable by anyone other than the dealer.

I think if you're doing a MIB1 -> MIB2 conversion and go with a box hacked to remove component protection, then it can be enabled unofficially, but I don't think it's possible otherwise.

I wonder at this stage if dealers wouldn't be willing to do some sort of a deal on it. I got it thrown in when I bought mine used this year and it didn't take much persuading, so it might be worth having a chat and trying to work something out.
