Title: Weird Question
Post by: Sootchucker on 08 June 2018, 10:38
Hi Guys (and girls). Bit of a weird question, but last night I noticed that my stuck on number plates were just starting to come loose. Since getting the car I had purchased some stainless steel screws and the coloured caps with the intention of screwing then on (more for security that anything). Last night, I drilled the number plates very carefully (taking care to check the holes were symmetrical and correctly aligned and didn't actually go over any of the letters).

However whilst the front went on no problem, when it came to the back, I fixed the number plate in the correct position (after carefully measuring) and held it in place with tape whilst I drilled the bumper (as I've done on both former MK7's), however as soon as the drill bit went though the plastic it immediately hit metal and it seems to be some sort of aluminium back fixed right on the inside edge of the bumper that I never experienced on the other cars. I didn't continue to drill as I didn't know what was also there, so just for the time being stuck the plate back on again.

Anyone else experienced this and can tell me if it's safe to drill though the metal ?

Should just stick them on IMO...

(I realise this doesn't answer your question).

Could it be the deformation panel? As the plastic is just a cover and hasn’t got any strength in the case of a accident so the actual bumpers are metal underneath, I have drilled these in the past (fitting taxi plates) but checked there isn’t any wires anywhere near

Where have you drilled the holes in your plate?

Mine is screwed in the top corner near the edge of the plate on each side.

I did at lunchtime and it is indeed the main crash barrier.

Obviously the MK7.5 is different form the MK7 in this respect as I drilled in the same position on those two cars ?
