Title: GTD Engine Vibration at standstill
Post by: fredgroves on 01 June 2018, 13:52
I've noticed a few times (not all the time and not every day) that my 17 plate Mk7.5 GTD when I am sat at lights has a definite engine vibration - shaking the car.

It feels like a misfire? But I haven't noticed when i pull away that I am lacking power.

Anyone got any ideas?

It was in for a service last week and they didn't say anything (not that I expect they would, they spent their time making a lame video)

I know the GTI fires the injectors in a specifc way when idling every so often to prevent the engine coking up like the older TFSI engines. I'm not sure if the diesel engine does the same thing or something simliar. If it is, there is nothing to worry about.

If it does, then its something new on the Mk7.5.... the three years and 80K+ in my last Mk7 didn't exhibit this....

BTW before anyone says it, I'm used to the agricultural rattle of an oil burner over the last 25 years!

Mine does it sometimes, I put it down to a regen as I thought they were no longer allowed to do a regen out in the country on a motorway dude to the emissions thing

It could be that, I have noticed that when its doing it the auto-stop isn't active but haven't clicked the button to see why that is (you can see why start-stop is disabled - not sure if regen is a displayed thing though)

Can’t say I’ve noticed that in my 7.5 GTD in 18k miles. Maybe wait for it to happen again then take it for a code read at the $tealer?

It’s a diesel.....
Of course it rattles and vibrates, that’s what dirty diesels do!

He says the auto stop start isn't active! Meaning the engine is still running but the symbol appears with the line through on the dash.

It will be because it's regenerating the DPF. The stop/start system won't be active while it's carrying out a regen. They can go a little lumpy, the fan may come on and the idle speed may also rise ever so slightly too.

My work van does exactly the same thing (67 plate VW T6).

I asked about this very thing on the MK7 facebook page and it would appear we are not alone

Its as thought it does a wee wobble - i was told it was a DPF thing also and knowing other MK7's do it and now the MK7.5 i am quite at ease i have no issues with the car :)

Had it just now again... checked the info screen about start stop status... just says "engine must be running" (or similar) and then when I got home (about a mile later) the fan was blaring.... definitely its DPF regen.

Cheers folks!
