Just noticed my front plate is cracked (could have been done in pheasant gate accident). Think I'm just going to get my dealer to make me some but can anyone recommend the best double sided tape please. I've searched on here as I'm sure Rebecca (booth) posted a link to some but can I hell find the post. Was thinking of pressed plates but not sure I like the metal ones so might just stick (no pun intended) with standard acrylic ones.

This stuff hasn't let me down (or my rear number plate). Think I got it off ebay. My plate did come off this week but that was because the garage used a different and clearly inferior tape..

I have pressed plates and used a german style frame which is screwed with anti theft screws to the bumpers and boot the plate clips in and the frame clicks around it. Looks really smart.

The ones that my car came fitted with are really high quality aluminium ones ( much nicer than pressed plates imo).
They do have that extra bit on the bottom that the dealer uses for free advertising but I did enquire and they would have made me a set without the extra bottom section.
In the end they took too long to get back to me so I bought some plastic ones off ebay

I’ve got the plate surround on the rear too

Mine are stuck on with double sided tape that I bought in a roll from Halfords. My last car’s plates were stuck on for 4 years using the same tape until someone rear ended me and the back one fell off. Would recommend
-
I've got two Wolfsburg number plate surrounds in the garage that have never been used. Seems less secure using them as you can just remove the plate quite easily.
-
My pressed plates are stuck on with 3M double sided foam tape.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01BR2MTS0/ref=pe_385721_37038051_TE_3p_dp_1
Rear is stuck straight onto paint, front stuck onto plate holder. Neither have budged a mm since fitting. Subject to regular washing with pressure washer etc. Highly recommend this tape.

+1 for the 3M tape, I followed Rebecca's advice and it was worked perfectly. Not sure they will ever come off to be honest!
-
Excellent Rebecca thanks for the link. Knew you'd save the day 👍. I'm assuming m.ebay.co.uk/itm/3M-x-20MM-AUTO-ACRYLIC-FOAM-DOUBLE-SIDED-ATTACHMENT-ADHESIVE-TAPE/181700778986?hash=item2a4e35dbea:g:hJMAAOSwSWJXRE6c is the same stuff??

Looks the same. If it’s 3M foam tape it’s going to be fine. 1 roll just did both my plates, using it the entire circumference around each plate and then a series of vertical strips every couple inches along the length of the plate. andy’s probably right, I’m not sure it’s ever coming off! Lol.
-
More is better
-
I’ve used “trim tape” that I got in Halfords for this job before and it was perfect. There was no way the plate was coming off without some brute force. About a fiver for a roll.
-
Cheers all

Thats more than a belts and braces approach
With my kids all having private plates and wanting fancy plates at that I must change a set of number plates at least yearly.
I did what you did above Bec and bloody hell it took me a full day once to get all that adhesive off. Never again
Now I just use a square in each corner and 2 squares in the middle of cheap double sided number plate roll and not one has budged.

Exactly that.
No need to overdo it. I just use 4 vertical strips and that’s probably one strip too many.
-
Re: that eBay listing, it says 3M in the title, however that refers to the length "3M x 20MM", no where in the listing does it say it is "3M" brand and if you look at the photos of the roll, the 3 and M letters are strangely not pictured together, unlike the Amazon listing which clearly shows the 3M branding.
I could be wrong, but it looks like the ebay listing is for an inferior copy, hence the cheap price.

Haha! I wasn’t taking any chances.
I don’t use a personal plate (can’t stand them) so once on they’re staying on.

Just use however much you feel is necessary .

I have small screws and coloured plastic screw covers.
Looks good with the correct colour caps and permanent.
(Until the next pheasant that is..)

It may be a copy but until it turns up I won't know if it's inferior or not. Have got another use for it if it's crap quality. I realised it wasn't a genuine 3M product when I bought it.
-
The counterfeit stuff might appear to stick ok, but long term is when you'll find out for sure, perhaps one day after driving you might find your number plate has fallen off! Theres that old saying, buy cheap, pay twice!

I don't think it's counterfeit it's just 3 metres of auto foam tape. Other companies will make tape aswell as 3M, they aren't the sole manufacturer of that particular tape. For £3.99 it's not worth getting bothered about it. If it works then result if not, who cares
-
Counterfeit or passing off, whatever you call it, it is without a doubt meant to imply it is manufactured by 3M, without directly infringing their trademarks which is why it is backed with red, and has 3 and M strategically placed on the role. Yes it will be sticky, no doubt, but it won't have the R & D and precise manufacturing standards as 3M, and hence may not last as long, but worth a try for £3.99.
-
Well believe it or not but genuine 3M tape has arrived and it looks like it's got all the correct markings on it.
-
You must have won a watch as most of the sellers negatives relate to that tape!!
A piece of crafty advertising
-
Haven't tried it yet though

please post some photos

Constantly refit numberplates due to dodgy motorfactors double sided tape?

What's the general consensus from people on the rear number plate? Stick it straight onto the bumper? Screw it onto the bumper? Supplying dealer has screwed original plate straight through the bumper and not exactly left the plate even and straight either. I've got an autostadt number plate holder which the new plate will slip into fine but it means I'd have to do a new hole in the bumper possibly two. Advice welcome.
-
I'd personally just use double sided tape again. A wee slip on the drilling and it will end up squint again
-
Yeah was thinking that. Was expecting pre drilled holes like on the Mk5 golf and Jetta but remembered the plate was actually attached to the boot lid. My OCD is kicking in now so I want it lined up perfectly and even
-
I found the rear a nightmare to centre. I was out with a plumbline dropped from the badge with a mark on the number plate to signify what was centre of that as well.
Then you have the problem of height wise
My OCD has taken a hammering with our 3 Golfs and private plates
-

-
Stick it on. Screwed on plates are awful. I didn’t take any special measures to centre mine horizontally and vertically other than my own eyes, but I do have a very good eye for things being dead centre. Nice clean look stuck straight one.

Stuck my wife's new plates on her Evoque last week.
Don't tell her but I got the back plate slightly wonky but I don't think she's noticed yet :lipsrsealed:
