Apologies for starting a new thread, which is probably a little unnecessary, but I'm excited and wanted to shout somewhere...
I've just put down a deposit for a '16 plate Golf GTI PP.
Specced with heated seats, sat nav, keyless and DCC.
I've been looking to move on from my Mk7 TDI for a while now and with a change in commute circumstance meaning I only need to cover 60 miles 3 days a week instead of 5, I've decided to start looking at something else. Only sticking point was the negative equity my current PCP was in. VW advised I could VT, so VT is what I am going to be doing.
The GTI I've ordered is miles away in Norfolk, but at a shade over 19.5k from an approved VW dealer it seemed a pretty good deal to me. Hoping I've not been taken for a ride, though the excitement is definitely outweighing any negative thoughts at the mo.
I've spent the last 4 weeks flitting to and from Focus ST to GTI and back again. Test drove both, thought they were both a lot of fun, but didn't think I could justify the extra for a GTI until I started looking at 16's rather than 2017 models.
So sorry for creating yet another topic but... WWOOOOO!

You won't be disappointed, or at least you shouldn't be if the car you are buying is a good example of a 16 plate GTI
-
Just done the same myself (albeit from a 2016 GTD to a GTI).
The GTI really is everything anyone ever said about it. My only regret is that I should have made the change sooner.

The dealer did a fantastically detailed 7min walk around vid for me and it looked immaculate. Fingers crossed! 20k on the clock, which is higher than I'd have liked but probably about average for a 2 year old car.

That's great to hear. The model I test drove the other week was so much more engaging than the TDI I have.

I've only had my 16 plate GTI Performance Pack for just over 2 months now after coming from a 66 plate Focus ST3 and while my Golf seems to be a better built car and is a nicer car to drive normally, the ST felt a much quicker car to drive hard and seemed to handle that little bit sharper too although the electronic slip diff in the Golf allows it to put the power down better out of the corners, it reminds me a little of my old mk1 Focus RS (should never have sold that!).
I don't think the Golf is much slower than the ST but it doesn't feel as quick due to the smoother power delivery. It's miles better on fuel than the ST though! I can easily get between 380-400 miles to a tank compared to 310-320 miles in the ST.
One thing that is crap on the Golf compared to the ST is the sound quality of the stereo, it sounds like a wet fart with the volume up! Even my VW Transporter work van's stereo is better than the Golf!
All in all though, pretty pleased overall (apart from having to have the bonnet, roof and spoiler painted after only having it 2 months!). Getting itchy fingers now though, I think I'll be starting to play with it soon as I can't leave anything alone! Lol!
It'll be a lot better to drive than your old diesel though, I'm sure you'll agree once you get it
-
Great to see that you’re getting better MPG over the ST. Another tick in the justification box.
-
Is it at Robinson’s Norwich ??
Go for it , not wanting to upset any one but I really think all diesels will plummet in price and desirability over then next few years.
People could have some big shocks with residual values and PCP
-
That was one (of many reasons) why I changed.
-
Yup, I make you right. The diesel scandal surrounding VW alone was enough to stick me in massive negative equity when, by all my calculations 4 years ago I should have been safe or up by now. There's a lot of stigma attached to buying one now.
Just hoping the inspection man is in a good mood when he comes to evaluate the car. 2 dealers have looked over it in the past 2 weeks and told me it was in good condition, but still I feel nervous about it.
-
You could probably lease a brand new one for the same money you'll pay on nearly new from a VW dealer.
Just saying...

Your totally right on this front. I was originally looking at a 2017 model registered in June with 3k on the clock and due to the £1500 deposit contribution and lower interest rate on the finance it worked out £65 a month cheaper to get a brand new one with the exact same spec.
-
I don't doubt that's a viable option but with everyone raving about how great the GTI is (and from enjoying the cabin of the Mk7 TDI already) I'm looking to hang on to it as our only family car anyway.
If I was only looking at 2 years then yeah - lease would be the way to go.
-
Meh, it will be old hat come the Mk8 and with a lease you are only effectively paying the depreciation, so you'll be no worse off.

I’ve also ditched my gtd for a mk 7.5 GTi. I can’t wait!

The Mk7/7.5 is a cracking car. Despite a new model coming along to replace it, it will still be a cracking car then. For those that keep cars for a long time, having the 'new hat' isn't all that much of a priority.
-
In all honesty I didn’t know there’d been a facelift before last week - so I think I’ll be alright.
-
Quite a few GTD to GTI ers on here.
The GTI is a fantastic car and I don’t think any of you will be disappointed.
You might have to stop checking the mpg though..
.
-
Mine is a non PP btw and has averaged 36 ish over the last 60k.
40 + easily achievable on a long run 20- easily achievable on a fun run.
Brilliant car to suit your mood.
-
I picked my mk7.5 GTi up today and I managed to get 40mpg on the way back home. 100 miles ish. The traffic was slow mind
After have diesels for a long time it was a different driving experience I must say, the lack of low end torque got me a few times but the top end power is WOOOOOOW
The smoothness and quietness at normal speeds is lovely mind
-
You need to drive it differently to a gtd to get the low end torque. Instead of just flooring the accelerator you need to change down a gear or two.
-
Getting excited now. Picking it up next Saturday from Norfolk which is about 90 miles away. Going to get a train up and enjoy the drive home.
Still have the TDI sitting at home waiting for the inspection. Don't know why I'm nervous about that, I've looked after that car so shouldn't have much to worry about other than the extended mileage.
-
Just couldn`t let my GTD go

Yeah it’s been over 10 years since I had a petrol so I’m getting used to it
It’s an amazing thing to drive with no front end weight like the GTD had so it corners so mutch better.
-
Carl that last line has made me all the more eager to get into my new car this weekend!

You won’t regret it, I haven’t
I even got 43mpg out of mine this morning on a 44 mile round trip, although the traffic was sat at 50mph at the most.
-
Out of interest, does the GTI economy get a little better as the miles grow ?
Whilst I obviously didn't buy the car to get GTD economy levels (nor will it ever), one thing I've noticed is that even if driven sedately it seems to take an age to get past the 30 mpg mark. On a run home from work the other day (around 17 miles), warm temperatures, fairly busy motorway so around 55-60 mph average, in my GTD I would typically get anywhere between 57-62 mpg, whereas in the GTI (with minimal hold ups), I just about broke 40 mpg (which in itself I know is an engineering feat for a 230ps petrol engine with an automatic box), and that was driving like a granny at around 50-60mph, but was wondering if this would improve slightly as the miles went on. Currently I have less than 200 miles on the clock, so very much not run in yet, and I've tried both normal and Eco modes (very similar to each other).
My GTD's I noticed seemed to get much better beyond around 1000-2000 miles and upwards (delivering their best consistent MPG's around the 8k miles upwards). Didn't know if modern TFSI engines were also quite tight and running some sort of mild "running in map" like the diesel engines.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, it's a beautiful drive and the MPG is probably the one and only sacrifice I knew I would be giving up swapping to a GTI, and don't regret it for a second, just wondering.
-
Sounds to me you're not far off what I would expect from mine. From what I recall in previous threads, there seemed to be about a 5mpg discrepancy in favour of a manual. On the run you describe, I'd expect about 45 generally with 50 possible but only in exceptional circumstances (exceptionally tedious).
-
I’m doing 2 x 170 mile motorway journeys per week in a 7.5 gti pp manual. On 9000 miles and returning 44mpg on my commute @70mph on quiet motorways using momentum fuel. 440 Miles per tank!
Though weekends only sees 25mpg!
Still can’t complain!
-
Momentum does seem to improve mpg. At 7K miles my PP Dsg averages around 35/36 in general driving. Just run on supermarket unleaded it was closed to 33 average, tho' warmer weather may have helped a bit too.
-
It's here! I love it! This morning was my second commute to work in my new GTI(pp) and I've noticed that my driving style has definitely changed.
Driving a 1.6 TDI I was having to really put my foot down to get any expression from the car at all and would often cruise along the motorway at a slightly higher than average speed.
With the GTI though, it's that knowing of what you have and how you can use it that puts the smile on my face even before putting a foot down. Cruising at 65-70 is absolutely fine because if I want to overtake someone then I can at the blip of a throttle.
So yeah, I think fast cars are definitely safer given the right mindset.
In fact that reminds me - the only time I got a speeding penalty was when I moved out of an ST and into a Polo rental for a week. Took so much effort to get going that I ended up screwing up!

MrBinks, how come your rear badge is chrome and not red like it should be for PP models?

that was my 2nd thought, after nice car :)

I just got a 63 plate with the PP it has a chrome badge thought it was only early one that didn’t come with the red.
-
I did wonder, as it was my opinion that they were supposed to be red - I wasn’t 100% sure though. Hmm...

Maybe a silly question, but does your car have the other visual identifiers for the performance pack model? Red GTI badge on the front grille red, GTI logo on the front brake calipers, the larger front discs and vented rear discs?

Yes, it does (and the LSD option in the menus).
-
A registration year number is not necessarily aligned with VW manufacturing changes.
Perfectly possible that the red badge for the PP came during the 6 months of 63 plates... I can't remember when it happened.

But MrBinks said he has a 2016 model. Suspect rear end at some point maybe or previous owner debadged and garage rebadged incorrectly?
-
Yeah...i struggled to sell my 63reg Leon FR tdi Dsg, 38k miles immaculate cond. Managed to get £7900 for it.
Hardly any interest tbh.
