When I picked up my Clubsport last week the guy at VW suggested I should fill up with super unleaded every 3rd fill up. I’ve heard of Subaru drivers doing this but was wondering if anyone actually does this
-
I use Shell v power every time not because I think it gives any more horse power but because of the additional cleaning additives.
-
I always fill up with super unleaded (V power if I can get to a Shell garage).
I can't see any benefit at all in just using super unleaded on every third tankful.
-
That was what I said to him as surely no benefit in using every third fill up, thanks for the replies - looks like I’ll be filling up at Shell regularly
-
I've used V-power/optimax etc since they first became available...
main reason is the well proven cleaning packages & low bio fuel content...most cheap unleaded fuels have poor cleaning & higher Bio (within EN standards) content...both items gunk up the engine, injectors etc...
Oh & just so you know...the reason that the "replace fuel filter" item has been erased from the petrol MK7 service it that the fuel filter is designed for life & is not a separate item..it is part of the "fuel delivery unit" which includes the pump & all buried in the fuel tank!
So how do VW get around problems is countries with poor fuel?..."VW fuel additives" at virtually every service....& short fixed service intervals..

I think there is a fair point to be made about filling up every third or forth fill with super unleaded. If the cleaning power of these super unleaded fuels is so superior to regular unleaded, then cars just run on regular would suffer problems quite quickly.
As it is, they don't, so the superior cleansing properties of the super unleaded might not be as herculean as the manufacturers claim. Therefore using them for 25% or 33% of the time say, should be sufficient to benefit but without paying the 10p / ltr or so, premium at every fill (roughly £200 extra / year for me).
Having said all that, there is the fact that they have a higher octane rating and therefore may provide 'extra bang for your buck'. That might improve economy and negate the cost premium.
I generally have used regular super market petrol since getting my GTi last September, but recently have switched to mostly filling up with Tesco Momentum and have seen an improvement in fuel consumption (33 to 35 on average), but other factors may have contributed to that (weather and different journey's, etc.)
I don't have a regular commute, so I can fill up sometimes twice a week or not for three weeks depending on where I'm working and how often.
As it is, I will probably stick with Momentum for most fill ups and in doing so, completely disagree with my own thoughts in the first paragraph

Always use Tesco Momentum 99 octane. Sometimes I put Shell V Power in. But Shell stations here in my part of S.Wales are not that plentiful. Before Tesco introduced Momentum, I would drive a 25 mile around trip to buy Sell Optimax as it was known by then. My wife thought I was mad. Especially when you arrived at the garage and they had run out...She may have been right after all.

An interesting point as like you I don't have a standard commute and some weeks could do 400/500 miles a week with work (mostly motorway) and other weeks not use the car at all, therefore if there is a benefit in increased MPG then this could offset the additional costs
-
I always fill up with Costco 99RON, and have done since getting the car. I commute around 300 miles a week to work and back so by the end of Saturday I've done around 400miles and still have over 1/3 of a tank left.
I don't see the reason to only use it on every 3rd tank, as the ECU will adapt timing etc and then have to re-learn again. Seems daft.

How is the fuel economy of the standard GTI v Clubsport so different - I only just get over 300 miles from a tank, and that''s based upon a 40 mile each way relatively gentle commute, on VMax/Momentum...

The Clubsport has a slightly detuned R engine not the regular GTI engine.
The GTI has a small quick spooling turbo in a soft state of tune that will happily run on 95RON.
The CS/R engine likes to drink fuel and needs high octane stuff.

Did my first long run using super unleaded yesterday, drove from Southend to Southampton and averaged 35.1 MPG with settings set to ECO

Why would you want to use eco, ever?

And not just because its not extreme petrolhead hardcore either... its just BS. It doesn't help your fuel economy in any meaningful way. Just makes driving dreadful.
