Title: Rear View Camera Retro Install problem
Post by: Olifran on 26 March 2018, 09:12

Hi,
I have a MK7.5 R. and fitted the RVC VW retro kit (5G2054634).
I checked my head unit for compatibility and it wasn't on the list of those that it doesn't work on (also emailed them with my VIN).

Wired it all in as per the instructions. Coded the two modules and re-set the head unit.

However now my right side reversing light and the camera do not operate. Also black screen on the radio.

Any ideas where to start?

I believe the RVC and right reversing light are on the same line and both energise.

TIA.

You checked the voltage on the loom? Could it have shorted and blown the fuse? Did you connect the correct wire (black/blue to black/blue I think)? You sure you have a right side reverse light (my 7.5 only has a left)

Haven’t checked the voltage yet. Fuse to poison F18 looks ok. The boot realease works.
Connections in the boot look sound and are as per the manual. I’ve always had two reversing lights.
I may check the connections at the back of the media player again.

Well it won’t be the media player connections as the camera gets the power to open from the black/blue wire, the wire that goes to the fuse box is to power the camera, and the wires that go to the media player (white and black) are just the video signal and the other two wires are boot release (as I understand it), but going on the reverse light and the camera is not opening (the black screen could be the camera is working but it’s closed so dark) I’d say you’ve  either got no supply or maybe only one light and you’ve connected to the wrong black/blue (from memory again I think there is another black/blue on the right of the car which isn’t reverse but I could be wrong)

Thanks for the info. I’m pretty sure I’ve tapped into the wire as per the manual.

The camera is not flipping out at all. So does seem maybe there is some incorrect wiring somewhere. The manual does stipulate that it’s only guaranteed on German cars or something and that latest wiring diagrams should be checked. But not heard of anyone having problems with this kit after their install.

If you look at this video https://youtu.be/paJLp7HYb_A

I tapped into the same wire on mine. 6 minutes 8 seconds in.

Is it worth disconnecting my battery for 30 mins then re-connecting. Someone here at work
did that on his mk5 when he had reverse camera problem.

Yep that looks correct, BUT he ran the wire through the holes where the clips go, so that would’ve cut the wire when putting the trim back on

Yes. If you carry on watching he realises his mistake.

Do you think this issue i have is around this connection? I may try splicing again but my current splice looks sound

No, not if your reverse light has stopped working, it could be a duff camera, maybe disconnect the wire and see if the light comes back on

(You don’t have trailer assist do you?)

I don’t have trailer assist. Have my dash cams plugged into trailer control unit fuse for parking mode.

Is it worth me putting my test meter on this pin while selecting reverse? See if the signal is reaching? Prior to breaking down my splice.

Only asked as trailer assist is different programming, I’d check the voltage then fella

Just ran a scan. Bulb for right back up light open or short to plus.
Rear view camera no signal.

Pin 5? Was that the connection in the boot?

Yes the reversing signal for right side light and camera activation.
There was voltage at the pin but not the other side of the splice. Removed splice and re made it.
Camera popped out no problem.
