OK, I know this seems a bit anal, but as I understand it my new GTI will come without a top battery cover (the felt overcoat that goes around the battery). Seems VW dropped this from 040.2017 to the modified one without a top cover, leaving the battery totally exposed and the engine bay looking sort of unfinished ?
I know it seems to serve no real purpose but I do like the neatness that the top cover gives (if still not a nice as the older hard plastic units with a detachable top lid that used to be fitted to MK5 Golf's and Scirocco's). I was wondering about the possibility of fitting one of these when it turns up, but then I realised that you can't just slid it down over the battery, you need to remove the cables from the battery terminals to allow it to go underneath.
That is my question - if the battery terminals (both positive and negative) are removed for a couple of minutes to fit the cover, will I be left with a whole world of warning lights and issues due to the battery disconnection ? Anyone retrofitted on of these ?
-
No you shouldn't have any issues it's basically changing the battery.
As for the hard cover on the Scirocco our lasses only has the felt wrap and top same as my 2016 Gti

Cheers Pal.
My 2011 Scirocco certainly had the hard plastic type (see below - this was my car)

I seem to remember some mechanic telling me that on some cars (definitely wasn't a VW he was talking about) that the battery had to be coded to the damned car...
Be interested to hear if the Mk7 is one of those...
Think it was a Fiat he was talking about.

As long as you have your radio code you would be fine removing the battery

yes the battery is kinda coded to the car, as there’s 2 different types of battery you need to tell the what type you have in it, and if you wanted to you could put the serial number in
-
Nice. Worth noting for when/if you have to swap the battery.... now the Mk7 is over 4 years old I guess we'll start to see people needing to swap them soon...
-
It’s also to do with the BCM will charge a battery harder than a newer one, also I think you need to change the serial number so if using the same battery type it knows you have a different battery (don’t need to put right number in just change it)
-
Wow...you need to go though all this just for disconnecting the battery leads for a few minutes ? Don't think I'll bother :o

no, we’re talking about changing the battery not disconnecting (sorry if it confused you as it went a little off topic)
Also not sure you need a radio code as the mk7 and facelift have component protection, so when you switch the ignition on it checks a few modules to check if they all have the same VIN

how does it know a new battery is fitted or identify different serial numbers? 12.v on one batter is 12.6v on another battery surely?
-
Ah right, so if I just disconnected the battery leads for a few minutes, when reconnecting will everything work or will I be left with multiple errors / warning lights ?

Presumably because the batteries are smart...

you tell it by either changing the battery type (I think because they have different charging characteristics) or the serial number (so it knows your putting a new one in that won’t need as much charging as a older one)
-
Also on changing the serial number say it has 1111111 in the BCM you just need to change one digit, say 1111112, sand not put in the actual serial number

In answer to Sootchuckers' original question, I've disconnected mine previously to fit my tuning box (for about half an hour) and upon reconnecting, there were multiple warnings come up on the dashboard. However these cleared by themselves within minutes of starting the car up.
It might be worth a VCDS/OBDEleven scan to see what's been stored afterwards but definitely no long term issues.
-
As above, you will get a multitude of warning lights, but a short drive and the car will re-learn everything it thought it had forgotten.

You don’t need to remove the battery cables to remove the felt liner. It is tucked into itself at the rear (bulkhead end) I took mine off my MK7 R ready to put onto my new MK7.5 as I had read that the new cars didn’t have the full liner. My brother picked up his MK7.5 GTi and it had the full liner so put mine back onto the R only to then find out when my new one arrived that it didn’t have the full liner only the sides
Miffed at the time but not bothered now as it doesn’t look look that bad !
