Title: Notification of low battery- key fob
Post by: Pixwix on 20 March 2018, 17:46
Second time battery on key fob has given up the ghost with no notification on dashboard. VW garage are not convinced I should get a warning, ‘can’t confirm it’s an option on your car’ - Mk7 gti pp. 2016.
Please can someone confirm they have had notification so I can prove to JCT 600!!

What exactly is the problem? Car won't open or won't lock?

If it's a flat battery you should definitely get a warning on the dash. This is fairly standard for cars with some form of keyless entry or keyless ignition as the batteries tend to drain far quicker than a conventional key fob. My Focus had it 7 years ago, so don't accept any dealer baloney about a warning being an option. If you use the search function on here you'll see others have had warnings when the battery is getting low, the batteries tend to last about 12 to 18 months if you have keyless.

In my experience these systems can be temperamental, the central locking on my Focus would occasionally freeze and refuse to unlock. Changing the battery in the fob made no difference whatsoever. Eventually resorted to opening the car using the key blade. Locked it again then came back to the car a couple of hours later and all was well again. Either just a glitch or opening the car manually has done some kind of reset  :undecided:

Have you tried both fobs?

Thanks for the response Guzzle.
On the first occasion I couldn't unlock the car, second occasion I couldn't lock it and dashboard said 'key not detected'. Both times a new battery immediately resolved the issue. VW diagnostic both times have indicated the battery was low and despite me quoting from this forum where others have mentioned the 'warning notification' the garage is saying there is nothing in the spec or in their knowledge  to indicate that displaying a notification is an option.
When I picked it up tonight they suggested it was a rubbish battery causing it to stop working. I don't have a problem with the battery not lasting, I'll get spares, but I would quite like to be warned of the fact.
Apparently they are now going to ring the factory with my chassis number to check whether a notification option should appear.....so after 2 trips hopefully they will accept there is a problem and start thinking how it can be fixed!
Least they didn't wash it

On the two occasions my (keyless) key fob battery has been low and needed changing, which is pretty much bang on at every birthday of the car, I get the warning up on the dash.  Mines a MY2016 R. They should all have the low battery warning function.  Dealer doesn’t know what they are talking about.

They thought they were so fantastic when I picked it up -  'as a courtesy we have replaced the battery for you'..... we don't believe what you are saying but here's a £1.50 battery for your trouble of bringing the car in 2 times and being made to feel like an idiot..

I find my car goes through key fob batteries very quickly, albeit I always get the key fob battery low message in plenty of time.

Update - after supposedly contacting Germany for clarification the dealer have rung to say they still can't confirm whether my particular car should display a notification but they are going to take it in for 2 days, run the battery down and see if the warning comes on.....trouble is I can only imagine them then saying...'well we've proved it doesn't come on,  obviously therefore not an option, bye bye'.

Sooo.... online chat with VWUK . After some toing and froing the chap said 'after consultation it appears as if the light on your key fob blinks continuously when the battery needs changing'. To which I said 'but I know of other mk7 gti  owners who get a dashboard notification' . Answer ' that's on older models that aren't keyless'.
Right, so for keyless owners who don't have to take their keys out their pockets/bags etc on a regular basis there is a flashing light actually on the key. For owners who need the key in their hand more frequently there is a handy notification on the dash.
Absolutely unbelievable....and I don't believe it.
The saga continues.

But I use you as my example Booth11 I guess they'll say 'ah...but it's an R'.... and I'll be thinking 'Rsoles!'

I don't have keyless on my current Mk7.5 or my previous Mk7 (14 plate) and both prompt for a replacement battery before it goes flat... so its not even a keyless thing. (don't know if the OP has keyless)

Oh no, Kalimon, so we keyless 2016 PP's don't have it? Damn, I'm possibly going to have to admit my dealer/VWUK are right. But you didn't spot the 'blinking red light' either then?

2014 PP with keyless - I get the notification on the dash.

So MY GTi 2016’s don’t get the notification? But MY2016 R’s and  MY2015 gti’s do.... so is it a money saving thing or a stupid oversight.

No I didn’t spot it.
I keep my key in a faraday bag thingy so I tend to take it out of the bag and stick it straight in my pocket.
I now keep a spare battery in said bag : )

My point exactly Kalimon, we don't need to have our key out as such so not going to spot the blinking light.
I have a spare batteries now, one in my purse and one in the car... will probably still be caught out though as first time it happened I was locked out the car and didn't have my purse with me.

I didn’t realise that the key fob blinked before I read this thread so I’m almost certainly going to be caught out again.

2014 keyless and I DO get the on screen notification as well. Why would they change an already simple notification? It's not like it costs anything?

phone call today from VWUK  'Customer Excellence' ...'advice from technical is that no warning is given on the fob or on the instrument panel if the battery is low......some models in the group have this but not yours.....but as you have it booked in I would still take it to you local dealer for investigation and Ill speak to you after'.
I'm starting to think a batch of cars somehow haven't got this enabled, I would have been more positive it was a fault on mine except for Kalimon who had experienced no warning as well.
So, no further forward and I guess it's only a niggling thing but what is spurring me on to keep pushing them is the differing answers I have had from VWUK.

My 2017 R keyless has just given me the warning.

Can you scan it with VCDS as I've seen it in there throwing an error message.

So car has been back to the dealer and much as expected (by me) they couldn't prove anything either way about a display in the MFD. They sent a Note to Milton Keynes for an answer. A week later and Customer Service rang today to let me know they are closing the case as Technical services say 'my' car will not show a warning. I asked what was meant by 'my' car....a MK7 Gti PP keyless or a MY2016 or my particular one off car.......she couldn't clarify.
Looking back over the posts in this thread it doesn't seem conclusive either. Some Gti 2016 get it and some don't.
I said was there anywhere else I could go and she said 'no, that's it'. So I am resigned to carrying spare batteries with me and hoping next time the battery fails it's not the day I nip out without my purse/bag etc.

But if anyone else out there with a MY2016 gets the message I might yet pursue...at the moment I think Spud122 is the only one.. btw can I tell the build week from the VIN/seq number?

I got a 2017 and I noticed that the unlocking had got lazy, plugged in obdeleven and it had the error for low battery, changed battery and all ok, so looks like no warning for me either

Interesting discussion. I have a GTI PP on order for delivery in late June (not keyless entry). My current car, an Audi A4, has gone through 2 key fob batteries in 18 months, giving me a dash warning each time. My A4 does not have keyless entry, but does have keyless start.

I was shocked when this happened, as I had come out of a BMW 520d which I ran for 5 years without ever having to change the key fob battery. That car was same as my A4, keyless start only.

Looks like a VAG feature that they burn key fob batteries, even on cars without keyless entry.

I will keep spare batteries in the GTI and my wallet, just in case I get no dash warning!
