Title: Buying a mk7 - Sat nav?
Post by: mozzaita on 14 March 2018, 20:13
Hi all,

Soon to be joining you on the mk7 world.

I’m confused with sat nav types produced in 13/14 plate cars. Are there3 different types ? Do any of them use your phone google maps ?

13/14 plate cars with sat nav will have either the original (MIB 1) Discover Nav system or the Nav Pro. Sat nav wasn't standard back then, both units were optional extra. A Garmin based aftermarket setup was available for cars without factory fitted nav, this was a dealer fit accessory made by Kenwood.

To use Google Maps from your phone on the inbuilt unit would require Android Auto which wasn't available until MIB 2 units were launched mid 2015 onwards. Same for Apple Maps / Carplay.

Yes the Nav Pro is an upgrade over the lower spec Discover Nav.

It has a bigger and higher resolution screen, and a hard drive. Discover Nav runs the maps from an SD card.

NavPro has voice control, pseudo 3d map view, plays DVD's/video files (mp4, avi etc) and you get two usable SD card slots for music (or video)

I have a MY 14 MK7 GTD with Pro Nav MIB1. It's good and all that but I wouldn't have paid the premium to spec it new for what if offers. The voice control would be a nice feature if it was a bit more usable, it's not great. I think Dynaudio offers far better usable value for money for less than half the cost of the Pro Nav, KESSY too and winter pack (just for the heated seats). Thankfully my car has all these extras. If you are buying used like I did and the car comes with the Pro Nav then great but the Discover Nav does as good a job really as far as being a navigation system just with a smaller screen. Saying that though I have found that finding specific places such as business addresses etc. it is far easier to just google them on the phone and use google maps. I thought being able to play DVD's was a great feature when I bought the car - haven't used it once in over a year  I don't use the harddrive either as have all my music stored on an SD card. I believe the MIB2 was a decent improvement over the MIB1 so if you can find a MY 15 car it will have MIB2. The screen resolution on the MIB1 is a bit dated and I believe this is one of the improvements on MIB2.

I think those are the specs for the later models, correct me if i am wrong but i think the discover nav is 5.8" on the 13/14 model.  Pro is still 8" though.

I believe you are correct. MIB1 Discover Media Navigation had a 5.8" screen. Then went bigger with MIB2. The info I gave above was taken from V.W. U.K.'s site so is for the current versions. I understand the specs for MIB1 Discover Media Navigation and Discover Navigation Pro are as follows -

Discover Media Navigation

5.8" Touch Screen with 400x 240 Pixel Resolution
2D/2.5D map navigation (Europe) with voice control
CD drive MP3/WMA
Music playback from MP3, WMA, AAC files with title display from SD and AUX IN
USB, AUX-IN, SD (2x) (Aux and USB require optional connection cable) - only 1 SD card available for music, other SD card contains Map data
DAB, FM and AM radio reception
4x20 watt output (front and rear speakers)
Bluetooth connection for phone and media (HFP, A2DP *, AVRCP **)

Discover Navigation Pro

8.0" touchscreen colour display with 800 x 480 Resolution
Faster 3d Display Engine (graphics Chip)
3D map navigation (Europe) with advanced voice control
DVD Audio/Video
Film playback from AVI, MPEG, Divx, H.246, and DVD from SD, USB and DVD data carriers
Music playback from MP3, WMA, AAC files with title display from SD and AUX IN
Gracenote database, podcast playback and jukebox
Internal 64GB memory as SSD - (Solid State Hard Drive)  - 30GB can be used for music, etc.
USB, AUX-IN, SD (2x) - both SD cards available at all times (maps are stored on the HDD)
DAB, FM and AM radio reception
4x20 watt output (front and rear speakers)
Bluetooth connection for phone and media (HFP, A2DP *, AVRCP **)

Some good info here for anyone who is interested. This is for systems launched with the first of the MK7 Golfs - http://telematicsnews.info/2012/10/25/exclusive-volkswagens-new-infotainment-line-up_o3251/

Worth mentioning that a 2013/2014 car technically won't get map updates but nobody has seen this happen that I've seen...

I recall it initially being free map updates for three years, then it was changed to five years and now possibly lifetime?? It is certainly lifetime on the current versions anyway, not sure if this is the same for the pre current MIB2 and MIB1 though. It's free now for them so all good for the minute anyway.

This states it is free updates for life but doesn't mention or include or exclude older or newer/current versions so us folk on the older stuff might be O.K. hopefully - http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/need-help/technology/how-much-does-update-cost

It would suck to have to pay for map updates...

Lifetime now then.... ok...

I am not sure that there ever was a technical mechanism to restrict the update beyond the free period... to do it they'd have probably made a login based system where you register with your VIN - like with CarNet.

But they never did.
