Title: Rear lights on with drls?
Post by: Wrex22 on 11 March 2018, 15:29
On my A3 the rear lights are on when the front drls are on. Is this the same with the 7.5?

I can't answer this with regards to a MK 7.5 Golf but on the MK7 Golf the rear lights are not on with the front DRL's as standard but... they can easily be changed to come on with the front DRL's via VCDS so I would assume that the same can be done for the MK 7.5.
I'm not sure why V.W. have only front DRL's programmed to operate and don't include the rear lights (especially as you say that both front and rear operate on your A3). I can't see any reason for not having rear lights on all the time. I personally always drive with either my side lights on during the day or my dipped/non dipped headlights on at night so I always have rear lights on whenever I am driving.

It’s not just VW that have front-only DRL’s. Pretty much all (if not all) manufacturers’ DRL’s function this way (front only) on cars destined for the UK market. Maybe the OP’s lights on their A3 have been programmed with VCDS, OBD11 or similar so the rears also illuminate as well?

I see. Then I am unsure as to why pretty much all (if not all) manufacturers’ DRL’s function this way (front only) on cars destined for the UK market.
I'm sure there may be a reason, maybe someone can shed some light on it. (bad pun, sorry  )

Yes, interesting indeed.

I’ve just driven a 14 mile journey and was specifically looking out for relatively new Audis and Seats (2-3 years old). Visibility was good, so the majority of cars didn’t have their headlights on; just their DRLs were illuminated.

I didn’t see any Seats, but there were plenty of nearly new Audis - I saw at least 12, and some older ones too. All the Audis front DRL’s were illuminated as expected, and none of these cars had the rear lights illuminated. All other (non-Audi and non-Seat) cars I saw that were new enough to have DRL’s also had front DRL’s illuminated and no rear lights illuminated. Not surprising really, as that is the UK default position.

If the OP has owned their Audi and Seat from new and not made any coding changes for the rears to illuminate with the front DRL’s, then this suggests the dealer made the changes prior to the OP taking delivery (or previous owner made some coding changes if the cars were pre-owned). Unless..............the OP has their light switch set to sidelights during daylight hours. In the sidelight position, I think the DRL’s on Audis and Seats act as sidelights (at reduced brightness), so will be illuminated, and so will the rear lights.

No, it is not surprising at all. I have three VAG vehicles in the family here with DRL's and none of them have the rear lights illuminated when they are on. I don't recall seeing any vehicles on the road with front DRL's on and any rear lights on at the same time but I wouldn't have been specifically looking for them though. I must keep an eye out over the next while. I would be of the same opinion as yourself that DRL's only operate at the front and do not include any rear light illumination as standard.
What is surprising though is the OP stating that this is not the case with two of his vehicles but as you have said maybe this is the case because they have both previously been coded to operate like this or the OP is mistaken and has his side lights on and this is why he is seeing his rear lights on? Who knows? Maybe the OP could confirm??

Definitely not side lights. I think the change came in from the mid life facelift A3 , the rear light are on when the light is set ‘off or auto’ same in the ateca when it’s set off the rear lights are on ( no auto lights on the ateca as it’s only the SE model)

Be interested to know if this can be done on the 7.5 :nerd:

Thanks for clearing that up Wrex22. Every day’s a school day, even though it’s years since I went to school .

If you want the rear lights on with the front drl's then you need to change to Scandinavian drl with either vcds or obdeleven.

I want to try obdeleven but it doesn’t seem to appear to be available for the iPhone

With the adoption of LED rear lights I don’t see why the rears don’t come on with front driving lights. The number of cars I see at night with no lights on is amazing, at least if front and rear came on automatically it would avoid the problem.

There are a number of issues with DRL's:

1) The purpose of DRL's are to warn people of your approach (ie you driving towards them)
2) DRL's were considered to be environmentally harmful until LED's came along (that extra half a tea spoon of fuel you use a day multiplied up by the number of cars in Europe = a sh!t ton of CO2)

As such, no requirement for rear DRL as well as something going away from me isn't going to hit me right?

Then you get the DRL at night thing, which is an issue tbh.

I believe that there is another regulation forcing (new) cars to have automatic headlights, which would fix this - assuming that the luddite owner then "doesn't like computers taking over his life" and switch them off.

To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a requirement for rear DRL's now or in the future.

In fact you could argue that in daytime a rear DRL would mask the brake lights...

In some countries drl's need to be both front and rear, ie Scandinavian drl's.

If having your rear lights on masks the brake lights then your brake lights have issues.
