Hi guys,
Quick question please. As my newly ordered GTI will be the first of my MK7's without a "Pro" navigation system (just sticking with the lower spec "standard Nav unit), how does one go about updating the maps. Can I confirm what I've read is that the supplied SD card (in slot 2) is a special CDA version of an SD card with 7 licenses built in (one already used for the maps already on the card), which allows 6 further map updates over the next 3 years as part of the VW licensing system.
Thus I gather when using something like the VW Discovercare software, it's the original SD card that has to be in the computer for an update and not any old SD card (otherwise it won't work) ? If that is the case, are you allowed to backup the contents of the original SD card before hand (in case something goes wrong) ?
Out of interest, after 3 years if you need to further update the maps or if your SD card becomes corrupt or damaged, anyone know how much they are to replace ?
One final question, is it still possible on the standard Nav to load speed camera databases (like my current Gen 2 Nav Pro) ? On my current unit I prepare the POI (Speed camera) package, load it onto a small 2gb SD card I have just for that purpose, and they then get uploaded to the Pro's HDD. On the SD card based system is the process similar as I'd be a bit worried about putting anything other than the VW maps onto the official Navigation SD card ? If it's possible, anyone know if the POI data is copied across automatically onto the Navigation SD card by the system, or do they reside in some sort of flash or EEPROM memory on the head unit (just for my info) ?

Andrew you need to use the supplied card that comes with your car. You are advised to back up the data each update time anyway. I'm not aware of the cards only having 7 licenses on but if that's the case just update the maps once a year which means you'll get 6 years updates. POIs are done the same way as Nav pro but I believe you need to leave the SD card in the other slot for then to work, you can't put anything else on the VW supplied card. Cards are readily available on eBay in case you lose it but if it corrupts within warranty I'd be getting VW to replace the card foc.

Cheers Chris

Personal POI's are stored on the unit and can be updated from an SD card in the other slot. Once that is done, that card can be removed. I then use that slot for my music.

Good to know 👍

You can PM me for a SC POI database already in the right format, just needs to be copied onto SD card.

. Hi is this straight forward to install and would it be possible for you to forward a copy to me please many thanks

Sorry.... Just to confirm, its possible to update the maps for free in the first 3 years? (possibly up to 7 times).
If so, where do I get the software for this?
-
You don't need software, just download maps, extract, delete old maps of SD and copy new maps to card.
And yes.... you can update for at least 3 years, probably even longer than that.

Map updates available from here. (http://webspecial.volkswagen.de/maps/int/en/html) The process is a little complicated, but follow the instructions, or plenty of threads on here for help. Map updates are usually around November and May.
-
It's 5 years updates now. Article in VW driver mag couple of years back stating 5 instead of 3.
-
I'm still not sure how it would ever expire... has anyone ever reached the expiry point yet?
Is there even a VW price for extra years of subscription?
-
As I understand it (and this is only what I've read), the Original SD card (for non Pro-Users) which you have to use, has a finite amount of licenses on it pre-installed. Each license is used up at each successive map update, and (apparently) once you use the final license, that's it no more allowed.
Not sure how they would enforce this on the Pro-Nav, unless the same license system is already installed on the HDD ?
-
Yes but if that was the case, VW would then be able to sell you more updates.... has anyone seen a price for such a thing?
-
No because they are free  the people to ask are the ones with 2013 model Nav pro and I must say I haven't seen anyone on here complaining about not being allowed to update. Plenty not able to buy that's an entirely different thread
-
Try slot 2 if you've got Nav pro or check how you've got your POIs on your card.
-
Unzip and copy everything over to the root of the SD card. Basically not into a folder. You should have 4 files from memory. Are you using a pc or a Mac?
-
The three folders need to be in X:\PersonalPOI\ folder. Replace X with whichever drive letter Windows assigns your SD card.
-
No idea, but I have all three in my PersonalPOI folder on the SD card.
-
Are you updating POIs or maps?
-
It's a while since I added cams to mine but I can't remember having three folders. You have three folders and a hidden file for updating the maps but from memory you just put your POIs onto the card. I'll have a check this morning and get back to you.
-
On your SD card you should have one file called personal poi and also the metainfo text file. Within that poi folder you need the three folders called mib etc etc. Put your SD card in the slot and then go though the update process.
-
Look at this thread:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=279818.0
-
Have you checked to see if the SD card is locked or unlocked? I've just checked my SD card and I have one folder called personal poi and the metainfo.txt file. Then inside the poi folder are the three mib folders.
-
What worked for me (found this over on the VWROC forum) was the following - (albeit on a MK7 MIB II Pro Nav - not the FL MK 7.5)
When you download the unzip the original camera file to the SD card, then at the top level of the SD card (i.e. the first view you see when you click on the SD card icon on your computer), contains the following folders and files:
PersonalPOI
metainfo2.txt
If you double click on the "PersonalPOI folder above, it will open and reveal the following folders:
MIB2DE
MIB2HIGH
MIB2TSD
What the hack is, is to open the folder "MIB2HIGH" above which will then reveal the folders
PersonalPOI
metainfo2.text
Select both of these and copy both of these folder / files, then go back to the root (i.e. the first level of the SD card as mentioned above), and paste these 2 items back in there. As they have the same names as the original files that reside in this directly, the computer will ask if you want to over write - just say yes.
Basically what you are doing is moving the contents of the MIB2HIGH Folder up a level to the root of the SD card.
This worked for me.

Good afternoon,
I would be grateful for some help please regarding updating my Navigation Pro.
I have a 2013 PP GTI and unable to update my Sat Nav, I had been able to update it for the first three years simply by downloading the master file, unzipping it and putting the resultant files on a 32gb SD card.
But since then I have not been successful.
What I can remember is that when I could update the system I had a MIB1 and a MIB2 plus a text tile in the SD root.
However I have been following this thread and the file contents seem to be different to that described above.
I did try the hack mentioned but had an error message
Any advice would be appreciated
Regards
-
Have you downloaded the correct update?
-
The one I downloaded was from the VW site identified as Golf GTI until 2015
It is version P166_N60S5MIBH3_EU_NT_v2.7z.download.
Thank you for the response
-
It was originally three years of updates but VW changed that to at least five years. Maybe check your download again or see if 7zip requires updating. I couldn't get my last map update to work but then updated 7zip and it worked perfectly.
-
Well I never!
I did update the 7zip software as you suggested and I am pleased to say that the SatNav has been finally updated.
I had tried alternative Unarchiver tools in the past but always got the error messages.
Many thanks for your advice
You certainly have earns your pay this week.
Regards
-
I couldn't believe it either when I updated 7zip. Pleased it's now working though 👍
-
You can PM me for a SC POI database already in the right format, just needs to be copied onto SD card.
Hi,
My first post here. Very glad i came across your post. Are you able to PM me regarding this please? I've not figured out how to use PM function yet. I'm expecting a new GTI soon (standard nav) and would be very interested in sorting out the POI database.

You need a minimum of 10 posts to private message. Doesn't mean you can just put blank posts in to increase count though
Welcome to the forum though.

Anyone know what the latest version of the Discover Navigation v2.0 Sat Nav is for the VW GOLF TSI 2017? and how can I get UK only speed cameras on the sat nav? The SD card I have was supplied with the car from the VW Showroom. I received the car from them in January 2018 though it had been waiting in Germany ready to be imported the few weeks before.
-
It's probably up to date with map info.
-
Okay thank you. Regarding UK Speed Cameras on the sat nav, what can I do to get them or where can I download them from? It's my first time doing something like this so I hope it's not too technical.
-
It's easy to do. Have you checked eBay for anyone doing speed cam files?
-
Can't find any. There was a seller before but his account got shut down.
-
I found this site:
https://free-speed-cam-updates.web2diz.net/volkswagen-speed-camera-download/
Going to give it a go.
-
I downloaded the files from that site you mentioned however the site says the files are updated from this month yet when you view the files, they are from 2016.
-
Yeah thats a bit naff, I haven't actually downloaded the file yet.
-
Does anyone have a pre-compiled speed camera database file they know works and wouldn't mind sending me?
Cheers
-
I get mine from a guy on eBay but I'm sure he doesn't advertise any more, think he just does existing customers.

The reason why you get UK only speed cameras on the sat nav is probably because elsewhere in the EU using equipment that detects speed cameras is illegal and if used will result in a large fine plus confiscation of the equipment and/or the vehicle inwhich it is installed.
-
You don't get any speed cameras on the unit from the factory.

My GTI PP came in March 2018 with map version 161, though at that time version 166 was out. Current version is 169. Check you have the latest version. If not, download it from the web and update your SatNav.
