Hi guys,
New to the MK7 forum, had a MK6 but now part of the mk7.5 family since Jan - loving it so far
Thinking about getting a dash cam, one that can also record if god forbid I was to be a victim of a hit and run. Budget up to £150-ish max. Also, how easy are they to fit? Don’t really fancy having wires hanging about or visible.
Thanks

The viofo A119 is spot on, hides away behind the mirror no bother.

Using a fuse tap is the best way to provide power, no splicing wires and it's easy to route the cable behind the a pillar trim and across the headliner.
-
Not normally one to recommend Halfords, but they offer a dash cam fitting service for £30. Not too bad in my opinion given the fact it's a bit of a hassle to fit yourself. FYI, you don't need to buy your dash cam from them.
-
John Lewis have my preferred dashcam (Nextbase 512GW) for sale at £149 with a two year warranty. My dealer matched the price, as a VW approved accessory it also has a two year warranty and they’ll hardware install it for me FOC.
-
Don't forget that your insurer might well want to know that you have it fitted.. Basically it's a theft risk... Don't be telling them the first time you have an accident and wanting to provide them with evidence from it...
-
Thanks for the advice guys. I think swift cover, who I’m with give discounts off the insurance if you have a next base dash cam installed.
Question about the actual fitting, will it need to be hardwired to the battery and will it drain the battery?
-
If it's wired correctly it shouldn't drain the battery. Does the cam have parking recording? If not then the cam will only be on when the car is turned on so won't drain the battery.
-
Nextbase are generally seen as market leaders and have a model to suit all budgets.
I have the 212, fitted by Halfords which they charge £30 - which is a bargain a the hardwire kit on its own is £20. Fully hard wired in, vert neat installation. The Nextbase cams work on a magnetic click so takes a second to remove from the car if you don't won't it on show.
Quality is good, if you want the best you need the 512 but jumps up in price.
It does have a parking mode but you have to set it each time you leave, I don't bother with this.
Think the 212 was £120 fully fitted with the Nextbase memory card and free lens cover.

Do these have speed camera recognition? If not any recommendations of Dash Cams that do. Garmin? Thanks.

I had the Garmin 55 and that had camera warning but a beep and you had to look at the screen to see what the beep was for. Also. I had the very first ones that came out and the first one went back because it kept turning off and the second randomly stopped recording for no reason. They both overheated as well and turned off in parking mode hopefully they have sorted them now as even with a firmware update that was supposed to fix it, it would still turn off.
After getting a refund I went for the Thinkware F770 and it is perfect, spoken speed, traffic light, average speed and mobile speed cameras. Also has parking mode (IMO a must) that can be set to automatically turn off after amount of hours or a certain voltage to prevent battery drainage.
-
I'll recommend the f770 too, it's excellent.
-
Nextbase all the way for me
I have the 512GW and its even better than the prevous model which I was going to use as a rear cam.
BUT
Nextbase are producing a rear cam add-on for the 512GW with the plug-in is already built into the shoe.
This is where to go for all the latest info. a big plus is that Tiffany, the Nextbase techie is there for all the latest info and advice.

Hope this helps.

If you want to know about speed cameras, use Waze on your phone.
Forget any sort of multi purpose unit and just buy a camera only.

When my new Golf GTI arrives, I'd like to fit a dashcam in there, but I've ordered the car with the Lane assist package which I assume means it will come with a setup like this :

That being the case, I don't want anything too bulky that will stick out of the side and ideally not a rear screen either (as I just find them a distraction. So long as I can download via WI-FI when needed (or remove the MicroSD card) that that will be enough.
Also don't want to spend a fortune so anyone any ideas please ?

Got a Blackvue DR750S recently and I'm very happy with. It has wifi downloading of clips and great video quality with 60fps. The main reason I went with Blackvue is that I preferred the form factor over most other offerings. It fits neatly behind the rear view mirror and is very hard to spot from outside the car unless you're really looking closely. I hard wired mine in with a power magic pro. The Blackvue's are not the cheapest however by a long shot but they do seem well made and I'm very happy with mine.
-
Andrew I've got f770 sitting on the screen just to the left of the rear view mirror. Barely noticeable when you are driving. Highly recommend it.

My mate's got an F770 in his car. He loves the quality, but it's a big bugger isn't it ? Helps that it doesn't have a screen and can sort of lie flat. He did tell me that the app he has to go with it seriously needs updating for the 21st century, and looks very dated, but he said he can't deny the quality. It's certainly one to add to the list.
For you other guys with the models with screens (most of the Nextbase ones), can you confirm that you can set the screen to be permanently off or is it on all the time (think that would be a distraction ?
-
The Thinkware app isn't that bad to be honest. You only need something basic to change the settings etc and if you've got a big screen phone which you have the video clip playback will be excellent.

i have a mio myvue with a screen, the mounting isn’t brilliant but it doesn’t fall off, but I don’t find the screen a distraction to be honest, only real time I know it’s there is when a passenger knocks it with the sun visor or I hit a big pot hole and it beeps to because it’s gone into emergency mode

I have recently hardwired my Nextbase 512GW
I purchased a Bojo Genius Trim Tool Set before I started which made the whole job so much simpler, be it lifting the panels, popping the clips and feeding the wire under the airbag to name just a few of the benefits.
I used the Nextbase hardwire kit NBDVRHK-RP.

The How-To links on here were superb, thank you the Forum and its members.

On the Nextbase you can set the screen to go into standby - I've got mine set to 2mins. You tend to look at it for the first few days after getting it then you just forget its there. Even passengers don't really seem to notice it.

So trim tool kit - £10?
Hardware kit - £12?
Halfords charge £30 fully installed including the hardwire kit. No brainer for most people I'd say!
-
If you can do it yourself then it's much better than having Halfords touching your car! So the no brainer is doing it yourself.

Been looking for a dash cam for a while and was going to go for the thinkware, but then I received an email from my credit card company to say that my reward points (which I didn't even know that I had), would expire in about 2 weeks. So I checked and I could order basically anything from the Argos catalogue, and decided on the Nextbase 512GW, which cost me absolutely nowt, (zero, Nada) and with 4 points left to spare ;D
It wouldn't have been my first choice, as it's a bit big and has a screen, but for free, I couldn't really argue, and it did seem to get the best reviews on Argos. Now just need to work out how I am going to fit it. I've seen that I can replace the large (horrible) sucker mount with a smaller aftermarket adhesive mount that suggests that it makes the whole thing much more low profile. Guess I'll have to wait until it turns up to see. What's everyone's opinions on this camera ?
-
Picked up the BlackVue DR750S-2CH including the Power Magic Pro module at a trade fair in Las Vegas last year for the silly price of £180 all in.
Installed it myself (all wires hidden) and couldn't be happier. Picture quality is superb and can access footage via the cloud on my iPhone.

I've got a Nextbase 412GW in my van and that's pretty good. Picture quality is good and it's not too big to be a distraction.
The only slight negatives are that it takes ages to download from the camera to the phone and the auto save function is far too sensitive even on the lowest setting and would auto save even going slowly over a speed bump! Lol! Not a problem, just turned it off altogether, if I need to save a recording I press save, jobs a goodun
As for getting Halfords to fit it, I'd sooner stick a fork in my eye! Quite a lot of them struggle fitting bulbs and batteries! I've been called out a few times to cars after they've replaced this, that and the other and put things in wrong or left stuff loose. I'm not saying they're all bad but they're definitely not all good! Lol!

For anyone that has a dashcam and is worried about the voltage the Power Magic Pro is on offer at Halfrauds at the moment for £20 Not sure how long it will last.

Sootchucker;
The 512GW camera comes with the adhisive stick-on bracket and the sucker bracket as standard!
You should not have to buy it as an extra, if your asked to pay extra someone is pulling a fast one on you.
I suggest you join the Dash Cam forum, enter the Nextbase page and ask Tiffany the Nextbase Technical Advisor who is always on there for her suggested route to a free adhesive bracket.
....
Jim,
The screen can be set to 'go off' at any time you choose.
I always set both my Nextbase cams to blank the screen after 30secs.
Having a screen helps setting it up accurately, you can also remove it from the car and use it as a handheld for 2mins.
...
Best thing about the BOJO tools is they are made for the job from nylon reinforced plastic so they do not damage the trim.
Ownership of the correct tools means they can be used many times for other work that requires trim removal eg; assisting me to fit a dash cam to my wifes car.
