Title: Damage!
Post by: CocoPops on 04 March 2018, 13:24
So someone decide to swipe my car whilst parked... luckily I have cctv and it’s clear as day.

So thoughts on repair?
2month old car :(

Had similar damage on my last, three quarter panel. Not good as the panel couldn't be replaced, it would need a light skimming of filler and then repainting, or if that didn't look right then they'd be cutting and welding. I definitely didn't want panels cut, so went with the skim.

It didn't look quite right.

Whatever you do, ensure it goes to a VAG approved repairer.

Sorry to see the damage!  Very good it’s captured on cctv.

Hopefully repairable, and ideally you don’t want a new panel as it’s factory welded and far better to repair and keep original panels than replace where the fit could be off.  Not dissimilar to damage that my R had from a hit and run, and original panel was preserved and repaired to as new standard.  Find a good body shop that’s key to a good repair.

It was the side of a Luton style box van.

Send the cctv to the police and hopefully they’ll investigate and give you their details for the insurance (if they have some) although the police said on mine there wasn’t enough evidence 😡

On such a new car too

Gutting.
As above, try to get a good repair without resorting to losing the factory original welds. Good body shops are few and far between these days, most are just there to service insurance claims and don't do a brilliant job.

Really sorry to see that OP. Van driving scum

If your anywhere near Bham I would recommend Individual Specialist Cars (https://www.individualsc.co.uk/). They did a great job on my MK5 GTi when it was rammed into by a van on the roundabout. They didn't replace any panels, just repaired (extensive) damage...looked like new!

All the best with getting the insurance details of the party at fault and with the repair.

Holy moly that’s a mess. Hard luck chap, I’d be gutted.

In terms of repair, you’ll just have to put your trust in a reputable body shop.

Bad luck Cocopop, I would be gutted if that was my car.  Where are you situated. If you are in the westcountry I would recommend Smartworld in Exeter.  They did a great job on the minor damage I had on my previous GTI PP.  However it was not on par with the damage your car has sustained.  Hope you get it sorted soon.

That looks like a right twit-driver, he obviously didn't see that the rear of your car is sticking out more than the front.

If you can stretch it up to Birmingham then this is a top place https://www.citycentrecarcare.co.uk

PS, I'm pretty sure I didn't put twit-driver  does this site now have auto edit?

Don’t have to log on. Press the pause button the play. That’s how it works on iPad anyway.

That is absolutely shocking.
I bet you're glad you have CCTV.
Are you able to extract the registration number?
I know he's a complete clown for driving like that but I bet he didn't even feel that.

Have you contacted the company?

Good luck with it.

Yup, reg collected and reported to police for failure to stop.
Logo on the side was enough to find the company.

Took them nearly 24hrs to come back to me with policy details.

There’s no way he can’t admit liability. Not sure you’d be any clearer...
Plus I have videos of him walking back up the road past my car a few mins later.

You don't want it filled although it doesn't look to bad it's the paint match you need to worry about as reds a nightmare to match

Scumbag knew the damage he had caused yet still sneaked away.Agreed- that is as good footage as you could ever get, sound as well.A good investment.
He had plenty of room to clear your car, just poor driving.
Hope you get it all sorted soon.

Proper feel your pain dude. Sorry to see that. Problem with red is a perfect match. It’ll look fine during the day but at night in a sodium street light it’ll show where it’s been painted. I had an identical incident in my car and under a street light it stuck out like a sore thumb. Paints may be different now though. Hope you get it sorted.

With modern computerised paint matching technology, I don’t think it’s such an issue to get a good paint match with red these days. I seem to remember that forum member Watts had some paintwork carried out on his Tornado Red GTI (new rear bumper?) and he said the paint match and finish with adjoining panels was really good.

Metallic and pearlescent paints also used to be really difficult to match, even when the new paint was  ‘blown’ into the adjoining existing paint. Not such an issue now and a good bodywork and paint shop using the latest technology can get pretty much a spot on colour match.

@CocoPops; It’s never nice when your car’s damaged, even more so when it’s only a few weeks old. Hope you get it sorted quickly and without any hassle, and you get a top notch repair job so you can put the experience behind you and get on with enjoying your car.

Mine has been in for paint three times now  Only one was my fault.. Had no problems with the red being colour matched although I would add that all the street lights round here are led now!

Find an old yellow light at night see if it's ok

If it's painted correctly in the first place you won't see any difference no matter what light is shining on it.

When you get it repaired dude find an old sodium street light and let us know. My experience a few years ago was it was more orange the repaired area.

It was done with ceramic coat only 2weeks before damage was done, so I’d want it redoing.

Are they rebuilding the entire rear end or something? I would have thought about half of that would have been about right. :undecided:

Must be.

The bill for mine was just over £2.5k. No new rear quarter, but they did replace the rear passenger door as the damage was across 2 panels. Thankfully I wasn't paying

Yup, they’re saying it can’t be repaired and has to be cut out and replaced.
Replacing it means stripping out interior etc

Hopefully the numpty's insurance is paying rather than yours.

Shame they have to replace the panel, but fingers crossed they do a fantastic job and you'll struggle to tell there was ever any damage

Yeah they will take anything that could be damaged out while cutting the panel out and welding a new one in
