Title: Overheating Issues!

My GTI started to overheat out of no where.

My car was parked up over the xmas period for 5 week or so, i decided to take it for a drive and noticed that coolant temperature started to move pass the 90c mark, i didn't think much of it until it went all the way up to 130c and into the red, i managed to get the car home, and decided up open up the bonnet to see anything looked out of the ordinary and checked the coolant level, everything looked fine and the coolant level was spot on. Since owning the car i never had any issues with coolant levels its always been spot on.

I turn the car on next day and the engine management light came on and didn't turn off, also i noticed that the coolant gauge was moving up fairly quickly it was at 60c within a minute or so, i took it for a quick spin and again the coolant was increasing pass 90c so to be on the safe side i parked it up.

I got one of my friends to bring over his VCDS diagnosis kit and these errors were flagged up:

16464 - Insufficient Engine Cooling / Coolant Flow

Not sure if anyone else has experienced these fault codes before? or experienced over heating like this?

I was hoping it was something trivial like a temp sensor!

The car is on 13 plate with 52k on the clock, not sure if this generation suffered the dodgy water pumps like the MK6

Yes plastic impeller on the water pump... Had two colleagues 14 plate gtd's fail like this, under 60k on the clock too. That would be my guess as to what is wrong.

That's pretty nasty. I know this forum rocks for knowledge regarding issues but the first port of call for me would have been dealer/indie for a fix. Hope you get it sorted.

Is there an uprated metal impeller pump for the car now?

Yes they are supposed to fit replacement ones that have metal impellers. Takes you back to MK4 days this  :whistle:

Don't fit a pump with metal impeller  :smiley:
