Small chip/crack in my one month old climate windscreen plus other tiny marks.
I have never had a chip in 9 years of car ownership, so I was not pleased to see this happen. Fortunately, it was small enough and in a location where a repair could be done, but I am waiting out for more damage before a full replacement on the insurance.

I've had one chip/crack repaired and have numerous smaller chips not to mention all the paint chips on the bumper, bonnet and edge of the roof! I had nothing like that on my Audi which I owned for 12 years and my driving habits haven't changed. Very odd

I would be more then happy to have a thicker, heavy windscreen and sacrifice a couple of mph off the 155 top speed

I've had loads of windscreen hits on the previous Mk7... I think its something to do with the shape/length of the nose of the car.
There's also an awful lot of smashed up road surface around at the moment....
-
Oh I hope it isn't

Don't worry, it's no different to the standard screen so you're no worse off...
-
Yeah, nothing can be done except swirving to avoid those pesky stones!
-
Yes it is worst quality on windscreens these day on all brand..
So don´t use ice scrape if you can. I never use it anymore, because of all the scratches you get...
-
the paints crap too, i've got 3 scratches on mine already and only done 400 miles. i even had that carbon coating put on it...lol. waste of money tbh.
-
Stone chips on the bonnet... yes, another combination of rubbish paint and front end design...
-
But ain’t the front end design to do with pedestrians not getting hurt as much if hit?

Possibly one factor. The others will be "iconic Golf styling" and CO2 emissions reduction....

All cars are the same unfortunately and have been since they started using water based paint. It's not just a VW thing.

The reason for this is the use of water based paints. Your old Audi would have been finished with oil based paints which were far more durable. The climate police have forced the use of water based paints which seem to be more fragile. I am getting more stone chips after 3 years than I did with 12 years on my MK4.

Fully agree. Sorry mcmaddy I posted my last reply before I read your post about the water based paints. They are definitely more fragile.

No worries fella. It also depends on how many layers of paint the manufacturer uses too
-
Also largely depends on how fast you drive and how close you tailgate to the car in front as well

I drive sedately and don't tailgate but gets loads of stonechips. So are you saying I need to speed up and be more aggressive?
-
Yes if you get really close then the stones don't have time to reach bonnet/windscreen height.... and weave side to side lots too.

Good point, I'll do that! Can I use the front parking sensors to get really close at 80?
-
No, what i was meaning is that quite a few of our company cars front ends (bonnet's, bumpers etc) had loads of road rash, and having gone out with one of the drivers recently I saw why - less than a car length from behind the car in front at 70+mph, is not good for the bodywork (or the nerves)

You need some special customisation first, get this and you'll be at minimum distance in no time:

So that's why Audi cars don't have stone chips

The nose of my R was fairly peppered with stone chips which was rather annoying as it was an otherwise immaculate car. I think the shape of the bonnet has a lot to do with it. It is short-ish and slopes down quite a bit.
