As in illegal spacing? We don't.

Show use?

Presumably it's not illegal to make these plates, but it will be illegal to display them. The rules are available on the gov.uk website. As ANPR is widespread now, good luck with not being pulled over regularly.
-
+1, not worth the risk. I believe if you keep getting caught with illegally spaced plates, the DVLA have the right to withdrawl the reg number (not the physical plate) if they like. You don't own the reg number, the DVLA do!
-
Yeah not worth it now, I had one extra space on my plate ( X1 X MA instead of X1 XMA) and got a letter through the post warning me to change it or face a fine, I guess I was spotted by a roadside camera. Its not allowed as they argue they can't trace the owner if it mis spelt or mis spaced, funny how they found me though :)
-
It's just another petty revenue gathering exercise...our ANPR system is modelled on the UK version and has no problem reading the variations which crop up. The main thing is the actual dimensions of the plate and the size of the lettering/numerals...if they fit into the grid and are the right colour, they are OK. As a matter of fact, many of our police cars are fitted with plates which feature displays which are different from my 'standard UK' one.

Really? Love to see an example of a plod car with illegally spaced plates!

Worth remembering that the whole purpose of vehicle registration plates is so a vehicle can be easily identified by the authorities. Not so your car can be identified by your mates.
If you do anything to deliberately make your registration read differently to what it is supposed to read, and you make it more difficult for the authorities to identify you, you should know the authorities aren't going to be too pleased about that, and if you push your luck they will catch up with you eventually.
Whether they fool the ANPR system or not is besides the point, as we're not solely reliant on ANPR for vehicle recognition anyway. The human eye still plays sn important role. If it were all about raising revenue the easiest way to do that is to force everyone to buy your plates from the government like you do with your passport.

I've got a mate with a garage that is licensed to make number plates. They are produced on a computer linked to whoever and printed onto a clear backing, so there is a record of what he has made. However, it is accepted that from time to time, mistakes might be made when typing in the reg number. Obviously these plates are supposed to be destroyed.
He made mine for me. All the correct font and spacings, but he forgot to put his name and postcode on them. Whoops.
-
There's this site https://www.craigsplates.com/ I have bought show plates from them for my MK1 GTI some years ago. Now older and perhaps a little bit wiser So stick with the legal configuration.
-
My son recently bought a private plate and I got him some show playes made up all ' legal ' apart from 1 set of spacing had double the space and tbh hea had no issues so far.
Unless you look and suppose measure it you can't tell
-
I think as long as the plate is still clearly readable then you probably OK and just unlucky if you get stopped.
Had this on the wife's car for 12 months without issues. Local sign/graphics shop were able to supply for use as a sign..

You might have got away with it, but honestly, it just looks cheap and tacky.

Interesting comment.
-
It's my opinion of course.
I did a similar thing with a plate on my wifes car a few years ago. Her initials are JB (no middle name) so she had V7 OJB, spaced V70 JB. I got away with that too, but was never happy with it as it appeared to make me look like I was trying to present it as something it wasn't.
I sold that plate on a Volvo Forum and she now has our sons plate. He's only 13, so plenty of time to find her a proper one.
-
Consensus is to have a proper set of plates in the boot in case you get caught so you pitifully claim you forgot to change them
I have to be honest I detest it when people changing the spacing and add the off black screw cover, only thing i detest more is when you want the clean look so have the plate stuck in your windscreen

I really can't understand many UK vehicle owners with their pre-occupation concerning vehicle number plates. They seem to believe that drivers following their cars are having a mobile orgasm, just because they have a plate that may, or may not vary from the norm. My vehicle wears one, because the law says it must and I have to pay for that, but I'll be buggered if I'm going to give them any more than I have to. The make and model badges which came with the vehicle when it left the plant says far more about my car than any expensive number plate can.
-
+1, looks awful, these plates are a tax on idiots!

I saw one last night that was H9 RNV, the 9 had been turned into a O with a tail and the V had a tail to make it look like a Y. It was on an S5 and sounded pretty good when he took off.

To be really honest, I might look at a car which sounded throaty and powerful...the number plate would never rate a glance...ever!

I'm not that sad that I need to look at a number plate on a car to remind me how I feel.

I thought about purchasing KN08 EAD back in the day but figured it would'nt be allowed so never looked into it. I had legal spacing but German font on my MK4. Carried the correct plates in the boot ready for the just left a show excuse.

It did if you closed one eye, squinted a little bit and tilted your head slightly.

Mrs wants hers so that the space in the middle is removed and has the space between the last 2 letters instead so it reads her name more clearly but not sure if this will get picked up by the boys in blue.
I've told her to just do it and change it back if need be.
-
It's not a matter of if it will be picked up by plod, by when. It's their job to look at cars day in day out. If they see something dodgy or out of place, it's an excuse for a pull and a ticket. Like anything it's a risk.

I'm guessing this is a new style plate? If so, is your wifes name made up of 2 letters, 2 numbers and another letter?

No the space is before the last letter. Her name is made up of 2 letters, 2 numbers (which look like the letters in her name) and 2 letters. The final letter is an X which she says will be a kiss! and wants it separated from the name.
I was speaking to my mate who has had his plate for years who has never been pulled and seems to think as long as an ANPR picks up your plate correctly you shouldn't have any problems. His has all of his letters and numbers pushed together and has a black screw in a funny position to make a number look like a letter and another screw to make a C look like an E!

Unfortunately I was joking and I don't think anyone thought for 1 second that I would know someone as cool as that in real life.

i have a personal plate. had it over 20 years. i bought an a3 3 years ago from a dealer and he transferred it for me from my previous car which i traded in.
after having it a year i took it for an mot. the tester said straight away your car wont pass.I'd only just parked the car!
My plate is 3 letters followed by 3 numbers and the dealer when making up the plates had not left a significant gap between the last letter and the first number.ie ABC123 instead of ABC 123 Failed the car and had to buy new plates with the proper spaces. I wasnt happy with the dealer as he had Mot'd it when i first bought it. I never noticed the space needed and no one else had either.
