Title: Navigation SD Card
Post by: naxcars on 04 January 2018, 20:46
Sounds stupid, but can you use navigation software from one Golf to another.  I have a 2014 GTI PP with Discovery Nav and a 67 plate Gold RLine with Discovery Nav.  Was wondering if I could copy the card from 67 plate ad use on my 2014 plate

Why would you want to? You get 5 years free map updates.

Not speaking from experience, but might it be a bit easier to simply copy a card than having to download from afresh?

Might be a 2017 car but who is to say it has the most up to date maps on it? For the sake of a couple of hours the OP would have up to date mapping.

That's what I was thinking - rather just copy a new card then the hassle of spending hours downloading.  I hear all the horror stories of downloading and zipping this and that, I've never updated the maps since new

Sorry, wish I could give a definitive answer but I can see your logic. If you have a spare sd card, you could always try it? Nothing ventured nothing gained and see what happens. I'd check the latest versions for each head unit first though and see if they match.

Fair point. But at least if it is possible to copy the card it would negate the need to download them twice.

Do you have a Nav Pro in one and discover in the other?

If your 2014 car has MIB2 Discovery, like the newer car, then the Nav data is the same and you could just copy the data from one card to the other. However, the data for the older MIB1 Discovery is different to that for the MIB2, hence the different downloads for updates, so, if your 2014 car has MIB1 Discovery, which is more likely, then no you can't.

MIB1 has a smaller screen with lower resolution.

I can only speak for the standard Discover Media system in my Mk7.5. Though this may help.

The original SD card in the car is 16Gb in size and is formatted Fat32. IIRC it does not indicate on the card what class or speed it is. Though I would think any modern card would work ok.

I don't think there is anything special about the VW SD card. Someone else said they used non VW SD card. Amazon is probably the best place to get one.

Here is what worked for me -

Got it to work eventually :nerd:

So I went to this site - http://webspecial.volkswagen.de/maps/int/en/index.html (http://webspecial.volkswagen.de/maps/int/en/index.html)

(This didn't work for my Discover Media VW SD Card -

I downloaded the DiscoverCare program. This program said that the there were no updates available.

I went to the next page, did the backup, then the download which took hours, then the install which failed near the end.)

This did work for my Discover Media VW SD Card -

I downloaded the European Countries, Bundle 1, 17/12/12 update.

Then I dowloaded the 7.zip program near the bottom of the updates page and installed it.

I copied all the data off my VW SD Card into a folder on my computer. So the card was empty.

Then I clicked on the update file with my right button and used 7.zip to extract the 'MAPS' to my SD Card.

Remember to lock the SD Card again.

Now the Navigation info says 2018.

Note: as with any update you do so at your own risk!

As far as I know, it has to be a VW card. They have some sort of embedded coding that a generic card won't have, so, again as far as I know, even cloning a VW card will not work.

Anyway, I didn't think that was the point of the OP's question - thought he just wanted to copy the data from a 2017 MY car's card to a 2014 MY car's card.

I don't have a standard nav, based on the SD card, but I can tell you that its highly unlikely to have any copy protection!

I suspect what it has is a volume label that makes it recognise it as being the nav data... just copying the files won't work, you need to set the volume label too.

You need a proper nav card there is a hidden CID in the firmware of the card that cannot be copied applies to Nav rather than Nav Pro. This CID is written at manufacture and cannot be copied as generally SD cards are write protected for this area from manufacture. Ebay is your friend thats where I got my sisters for her discovery Nav. Normal cards didnt work.
