Title: noisy tappets on 16v
Post by: 16vbanger on 07 October 2005, 13:51
our 88 16valver has rather noisy tappytits
how do I test the lifters to ind the knackerd ones ?
as I don't fancy coughing up for 16 lifters  :undecided:

I'll be changeing the cam chain in the next couple of weeks so no better time to check I guess

Change the lot, euro car parts do a good deal on them.

it turned out to be the cam chain rattleing like hell

but at least it was cheaper to sort than replaceing 16 lifters

hydralic tappets are not adjustable, but the oooooold solid ones were.  16vs all had hydro tappets anyway so dunno why I bothered mentioning it

Glad you got it fixed, keep up the oil changes and always use synta/genuine oil filters to keep your tappets happy :)

as long as oil filter is genuine and oil is decent make you should be ok, but theres no point not using synta as its so cheap and widely reguarded as the best oil for dubs :)

the only thing is  is the synta thinner than mineral oil as our golf is an heavy breather

Synta silver is 10w40, if it breathes alot then might be worth cheking the breather system as well as the valve stem seals& piston rings.
Quantum also do 5w40 & 15w40.

I rekon it's the ring's ie blow by  :undecided: but while it's still going strong not smokeing it can carry on
when it starts smokeing the spare lump will go in

when the breather pipe is off to set the idle it gives a nice puff puff other than that its great fast and quiet

Im using the Quantum 15w/40w on my 8v GTI. Usual 1/2 mins of noisey tappets in the the morning as they adjust (Hyd) after that sweet. No noise!

Also stopped losing oil. Got it on the max 3/4 weeks ago, check last night not even moved. Quite supprised really.
