Title: Horn turns on when turn hard left. Any ideas on solution?
Post by: maverix on 07 October 2005, 10:37
Hi all. Bit of a weird one. On hard turn left I get the horn turning on. I have disconnected the horn, but I can still hear some kind of relay clicking in the fuse box when it wants to fire up the horn. I have tried two steering wheels, so it must be something to do with the internals. I have cleaned up the little spring on the steering column, no joy. Could it be a wire wrapping round the steering as I turn. Any thoughts are tracking down a solution would be appreciated. The car is a mk1 golf gti 1982, retro fitted with power steering. J

It could be your earth lead on the steering column. Just take the wheel off and check all the connections/terminals again.

I had the same on mine,

Take off the steering wheel, tighten up the 3 screws that hold the indi switch on.

Job done

Hi, cheers for the help thus far. I tried to tighten the screws. no joy on fixing the prob. It appears to kick in when there is pressure on the copper spring which touches the back of the steering wheel. I tried to flatten the spring so the pressure of the wheel turning did not effect it. Nothing changed. Tried my mates steering wheel again and the same thing happened. It looks quite simple behind the wheel and it is really confusing. Any other ideas, maybe I need to replace the indicator stork assembly?

I had the same problem on my MK1 Cab, one of the screw heads underneath the centre of the steering wheel was shorting as the wheel was turned. We got round this briefly by putting a little bit of electricians tape over it which was fine and next time it went into the garage they fixed it properly.
