Hi all the new 7.5 230 BP DSG for 1 week now and Im a little concerned at the "Avg Fuel Consumption"
Filled up the tank with VPOWER done 170miles and comp says only 40miles left ... granted I had a little fun with it first few days but monday through today Ive only done my 8.8mile each way (17miles) total commute to work ...avg speed 25mph stop start traffic (London)   I have the Air on , not even AC just to war up on these chilly mornings and the seat warmer on minimum...
I knew I was going to take a knock on consumption BUT consumption at 19 !!!!...Is this normal ...??? I would expect mid 20's even under the above circumstances ...?
-
I think you need to give it time. There are lots of variables that affect fuel consumption, one of which is temperature. I've taken a 10% hit in my diesel over the last couple of weeks, with colder weather and busier pre-Christmas traffic.
-
Cheers Guzz ....yeh i suppose thats true , also frustrated all "his" doing is driving in this start stop traffic ...dont want the engine to become to used to it but hard to take him onto the motorway to open him up during the week !
-
Also bear in mind that new engine will still be quite tight. I'd give it at least a couple of thousand miles before you get a fair idea of what mpg the car is capable of. In my experience they do improve quite a bit with running in.
-
Good to hear ! You a fan of driving it hard the first 500miles or taking it easy ..seems to be a great divide .....do you feel yours improved in performance over time ?
-
I’m deffo in the “get it warm, drive it hard” for the first few hundred miles.
Bed it in nicely.
-
I've always run mine in gently for the first 1000 miles, but many people are of the opinion that it doesn't matter quite so much these days. I suppose reading the manual may give you the official vw line.
That said I am too tight to buy a petrol so it makes no sense to me to buy a diesel and then suffer rubbish mpg as a consequence of continuous thrashing it everywhere I go. I just give it the odd quick blast to keep me entertained when conditions allow.
There's a wealth of knowledge on the forum about mpg if you use the search function for some bedtime sleep inducing reading.
-
HAha Im of the opinion to thrash it to although limited opportunities...
When does yours arrive Coco ...i see yours is still in port by your other post ..
-
Indeed, after your rant  Looks like mine has been at the port since 9th November!
-
20mpg sounds about right for London traffic.
I had days where I only hit 25mpg in my GTD!
-
9th NOVEMBER !!!???? WTF :undecided:
-
thanks Itava...thats put my mind at ease a bit :) LONDON TRAFFIC

I think you need to give it time. There are lots of variables that affect fuel consumption, one of which is temperature.
^ This. And the circumstances cited all contribute to low MPG;
- Low ambient temperature
- Short journey, during most, if not all, of which the car’s engine oil won’t have reached it’s optimum operating temperature
- Stop start London traffic
- increased use of ancillary equipment; a/c, heating, lights. rear window hearing etc.
- New engine that hasn’t loosened up yet.
OP; I find it’s more accurate to calculate the fuel consumption manually; filling the tank each time I re-fuel and dividing the mileage covered by the gallons used, rather than rely on the fuel computer. You should find the consumption improves with mileage as the engine begins to loosen up, especially if you include some longer journeys as well.

20?!?, i did 10mpg!!.

But mine is around 20 mpg with a lot of city driving now.. little more than i thought..

My MPG seems to have settled at 35 mpg.
My old GTD was getting over 50 mpg. Then I started doing shorter journeys and it dropped to 45 mpg.
-
i'm just doing short runs around town etc and i'm averaging around 25-30 mpg in my gti pp. i'm using eco settting mostly so the cruise stop start helps..

35?!?!, how do you drive?. What is your avarage speed?..
-
Not a 7.5 but on my 7 with PP and Stg 1 I can get 40mpg on a commute, you have to stick close to the speed limit mind and your commute can't be on country lanes.
Having "fun" means paying for it with your mpg.
-
Sounds about right. I've had mine for just over a month now and I'm averaging 20-22mpg. I'm also in London, so allot of stop start in traffic. Also its bloody cold right now, so the ac is being used allot!

35?!?!, how do you drive?. What is your avarage speed?..
... well I was pulled over by the police about a month ago. They accused me of speeding. I told them I wasn't speeding. They agreed and let me go.
I stick to the speed limits. Though I sometimes get there at full throttle. Which is why I was accused of speeding. Because the unmarked police that pulled in behind me was speeding to catch up. I think it was just regular police and not traffic cops. They even started off by accusing me of weaving in and out of traffic. My dash cam would have proved that I had been in the same lane for well over a mile.
Very short version -
I accelerated full throttle on a short dual carriageway between two roundabouts. Mr Plod - we followed you at 80mph. Me - I wasn't doing 80, I was doing 75, my statnav says that's 70. Mr Plod: thank you Daz Auto, bye bye.

Nice one Daz, don't let them walk on you.

My PP gives around 33 on a 5.5 mile commute in the summer but at the moment with the cold weather it's more 26 - 27. My commute though is relatively traffic free due to shift times with few stops so I can easily see 20 or less being possible in stop start traffic.
-
I've also been a 'tad' disappointed with the fuel consumption of my 7.5 GTi PP dsg (5 dr - sure it must make a difference), that has now done 2.5K miles.
Was expecting (hoping) for mid to high 30's with a few low 40's trips if I took it easy, but in reality I'm averaging 32.5 mpg (car readout, not calculation), though managed nearly 37 mpg during a reasonably spirited drive home from north Wales today (indicated 80 mph or so, plus a few bursts of acceleration to clear slow moving traffic / kn*bheads.)
Previous Polo Blue GT would easily see (indicated) 47 - 50 mpg on moderately spirited drives and A6 Allroad managed 39.5 mpg on same journey as today (it also has 245 hp & dsg, but has V6 diesel).
Having said all that, the Gti PP is fulfilling my needs exactly as a comfortable (DCC fitted), swift and smooth everyday car, so I'm not too bothered about mpg.
-
I've done 10k miles in my manual GTi pp and my long term average is 33. Been on a few long runs but that's mostly back and forward to work which is 6 miles each way. I'm happy with mpg and didn't for one minute think I'd get high 30s. Not really sure why anyone would expect high 30s except on a long run.
-
I'd say getting anywhere near 40mpg from a large hatchback with a two litre turbo petrol engine, dsg and 245bhp is nothing short of a technical miracle... But others may disagree
-
I've just done a Manchester to Southampton round trip and i was getting 39.2 MPG cars got about 1500 miles on it.

Long term: 36mph
Why?
-
i've just done a run around town a bit of dual carridge way and i was at 30mpg in eco mode :) 13mile trip :)

It is easy to get a better mpg if you have a higher average speed. But yours is not so high.. But mine is only 25mph...

My Gti is a much nicer car than my previous GTD except in consumption. The GTD easily did over 50mpg even with enthusiastic driving. One of my best trips was a 60 mile drive to airport, 4 passengers and all luggage for a family holiday so the car was not light. Wasn't in any hurry so cruised about 55mpg, trip returned 65 mpg. The Gti might be lucky to get half that which is quite surprising given they are essentially the same car albeit different engine technologies. Wouldn't go back though.

You might be pleasently surprised then as to what a GTI can do. On a long gentle run I can get over 50mpg. Last year four of us (adults) went for a 5 day trip to Cornwall in November driving in a non-economy minded manner and averaged over 38. Currently 500 miles in to a 630+ round trip (London to Blackpool, Yorkshire, Norfolk then home) and averaging over 40mpg. Often get 45+ on long journeys so never going to be as good as a GTD obviously but I'm extremely happy
-
And that is pretty incredible.
I might add conversely that my gtd in heavy city traffic for a day won't do 30mpg. Same if I just drive a few miles to my sister at the weekend.
It's more about driving style, temperature traffic conditions and overall journey distance than anything else.
-
I've had my gti pp dsg 5 door for 3 weeks and am averaging 28mpg. In fairness when one considers mostly local town driving, winter time, new car and getting acquainted with car, for the type of car it is I think is what can be expected. I travelled on dual carriageway road for about 27 miles to a retail park and recorded 37mpg. On the way home I recorded 40mpg. Come spring time and when the engine is not so tight I will be looking forward to an improvement in the mpg. I've only covered 300 miles in car so far. It's a brilliant car. My previous car was an audi A4 2.0 tfsi 208 bhp where I recorded an average of 38.1mpg. I would expect similar in my gti in time to come

Exactly.
