Title: DSG Changing Gear
Post by: clarky92 on 25 November 2017, 19:34
Can you change gear with the stick? Whenever I move it forward or back just flicks between s and d etc

push the stick over to the left  then nudge it up or down to change gear

As above.  You can push it over to the left to put it in manual mode in both D and S. Then push forwards to upshift and downwards to downshift.  I’ve always wished it was the other way round tbh, push forward for downshift; downwards for upshift, as to me stuck shift setup is counterintuitive, and fir that reason I always use paddles for manual driving, but decent replacement shifters not the oem plastic stubby crappy ones.

Which paddles are recommended?
Ones I’ve seen always see to “stuck on tat” I want oem+ look.

If you don’t mind paying out a fair amount for a really decent set, S2T paddles. Not sticking in, these are full replacement paddles.  They cost a lot, and factor in the shipping as come from US, but imo they are worth every penny as they are beautifully made.  They come in three styles and different finishes.

Some pics in here of the B3 style in polished black, I have on mine.

This overlay pic is useful for showing the difference in profile of the 3 styles.

Alternatively there’s other options.  Take a look in this VWROC thread.

Does anyone even bother reading manuals these days and do salesmen actually show you anything on handover day??

Exactly what I was thinking. Admittedly, the manual’s not the most exciting read, but if you don’t go through it, there’ll be features of your car you paid for and might be missing out on because you were unaware of them.

Maybe I’m sad, but one of the first things I do when I get a new car is to read the manual. :nerd:

I picked up my manuals two weeks before I picked the car up :embarrassed:

The manual is shocking imo. A cure for insomnia if there ever was one. It’s also full of stuff that won’t be relevant to your particular car, spec / features you don’t have etc.
Best source of info is forums like this and google.

Once you've got the chassis number from your dealer you can access the manuals online http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/manuals (http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/manuals)

Timing sometimes is spot on.
I looked at the page, decided they were too costly...
Then the next night, a set came up for sale £140 :)

So before I even have the car, I have the first mod.

my dsg plays up sometimes, i've only done 200 miles atm as i'm still trying to sort the steering out. but for myself who's unable to use the paddles, makes my situation a bit worrying. when i pulled away from a roundabout (rolling start 2nd gear) down a slip road (onto a busy dual carr) the car refused to change up to 3rd etc even with revs at 6k so i was forced to pullover and stop for a second or 3 and pull away again. the 1st time this happened i was on a normal country road so i basically had to just stop in the middle of the road.. i think it might of been because the box was still cold but still.. sorry to go off track a bit to OP :)

Sounds like you could have selected drive but then pulled the gear shift back again and selected the Sport setting which will hang on to each gear until you red line it. Next time it does it look in the dash (AIS) at the gear display. If it display S1, S2, S3 etc as it changes gear pull the gear shift back again and it should change back to D1, D2

If I'm not wrong maxie is disabled so he may not be able to use the shifter as quickly as an abled person.

Yeah I know but that’s not really the point, we were trying to come up with plausible reasons for the car to hold the gear and not shift up.

Right, so telling a person with a disability to do something that they may not be able to do is the point.

hi all, it's not the shifter as it's in D set to eco (and once i'm moving hands go nowhere near it) but i've noticed that when i pull off a bit quicker in eco the electronics (maybe) get a bit confused hence causing the dsg to mess up... i'll try the car in normal for a bit to see if that cures it. if it happens i'll make a note what the readouts saying d2 etc.. thanks :)

Yet you continue to miss the critical ‘Sounds like you could have selected drive but then pulled the gear shift back again and selected the Sport’. The actions suggested were to rectify a potential mistake made.

Have to say that inadvertantly selecting sport mode sounds the most likely explanation to me to.

Ah, well, it would have been nice to find a simple answer. My dsg 'box has been faultless from day one. It's a complex piece of kit, so I guess the occasional problem is inevitable. Bad luck for you to get it but, hopefully, adjustment will sort it. Really good when it's working well!
