Title: A little underwhelmed by active display
Post by: davyk31 on 19 November 2017, 17:10
As my title I'm a little underwhelmed by the active display. Unless I'm missing something I expected there to be more customisation.

Am I right in thinking you always have the two large clocks for speed and revs and then can customise what goes in the centre of those clocks and also what goes between. However there seems to be just a few set options to choose for what displays in each area. I like fuel range to always be displayed so set it to the centre and then speed and gear for the middle of the clocks. This gives the info I want but looks a little plain perhaps. Tried putting the range and average fuel as the clock centres and then phone in the middle which I quite like but it puts the digital speed readout as a small figure below the speedo which isn't that easy to see at a glance.

What is everyone else doing ?

Never seen one in the flesh but it would be a shame if it's so limited. If you look at the audi tt one you can apparently make the clocks smaller to have a larger nav screen in the middle of them etc.

Seems a trick's been missed a little bit. Wonder what can be done with VCDS etc?

You can do exactly that in the golf. It’s a shame it isn’t a little more flexible but Ive found it pretty decent. Main annoyance I have is using CarPlay it won’t show currently playing music from Spotify (suspect this isn’t VW’s fault though).

Ah, cool - I'll find out one day when I replace the GTI. Late Mk7.5 R or wait and see when the Mk8 comes out.

The Seat active info which is going onto the Cupra soon looks fantastic. For some reason the Golf got a poor version. They must be able to update it via firmware but I doubt they will

To be fair it’s standard equipment on the performance Golfs, whereas it’s a hefty optional extra on an Audi.

I like to have mine set to navigation with dials minimised and gear/speed inside. When I drive my MK7 R the old dials seem very old fashioned!

Nav and smaller dials is how I have mine for about 95% of the time. AID is limited compared to the Audi version. In the RS models you can have a single central rev counter with stuff either side which would have been cool for the performance Golfs.

I'd say it was a bit limited and whats more only limited by the lack of imagination of the creators because its a piece of bloody software, not hardware.

As such I'd love to say they will update it later... well, they will update it for sure, but none of us with cars already will see the update. VW seemingly have a policy of bug fixes only for existing customers, new features for new customers only.

Hi, m curious as to how you got the "needle" to appear in the centre of the right-hand dial where it's showing the number of miles left in the tank. My MK7.5 GTD only shows a curved line which gets shorter as the number of miles decreases.

I wonder if there has already been a software change...

I say that because vwjap is also showing green stuff in the other photo and mine is blue only...

Also, I wonder if a GTI/R display is different again...

I also wonder whether some tweeks are possible to the settings already... should be if there are variations!

It must have been updated... I've just had a look at the manual and that lists a view called "classic" which isn't actually one available on my GTD... its "speed and gears" on mine.

I got the manual out because I was hoping to find what hell is displayed in the middle of the right clock in "efficiency" mode... and of course, it doesn't actually tell me.

nope I've been playing with obdeleven and the settings of the AID, I can select any colour I've programmed in and there are 4 different display types (stock,GTI,R), plus the orange/gold display I believe is the arteon (could be wrong as I've not seen inside one yet)

GTI is red too

Nice :D

I guess I was almost right in that there are different displays GTD/GTI/R...

Must get myself an OBD11...

Does the rev counter change to have a different red line as well? Obviously not good for a GTD to have a petrol red line display!
Title: Re: A little underwhelmed by active display
Post by: Vwjap on 20 November 2017, 15:46
Looking at the screens the red lines start at 4.5k but the r/GTI one has only little dots from 4.5k until 5.5k when the squiggly line comes in, as you can see in the pics previously posted, but the GTI clocks the red line starts at 6.5k

That's just petrol vs diesel dials.

Amazed the era we live in that folks always want more. I love the display and everything about this car. Thought it’s an absolute steal at the price I paid. Will never want for more. Then I was born in the 40s although still drive as a 25 year old. So never had over expectations. The 7.5 will only be bettered by the 8 maybe and certainly not so much to bother me.

Its still really only VW's first stab at the technology. I know other (true) premium marques have had it for some years now, but its VW's first go...

On the other hand, its only software and to have had a more exciting display would have been nice. Then again a Golf isn't a mad dog lambo or even a Japanese crazy bonkers Type R.

The same AID you look at is also available on a Golf Match if you pay for it. I'd doubt you'd want a Ferrari style dash on that...

PS nobody can tell me what the efficiency view display on the right dial actually means?

In case any prospective owners are wondering about the digital display, I think it's one of my favourite things about the new car. That said, it's the first time I've had a car with any sort of screeen. The resolution is excellent and I love the map in the centre. I don't think it a big deal that you can't show the map on both screens at once.

The only thing which we're working out is how good the traffic reports and routing are. We got rerouted after an accident and we were comparing the in-car satnav with google maps. Needless to say they didn't agree on route or journey time, and as we've used google maps for so long we sort of trust them more. (I imagine their data is richer if they're tracking smartphone journeys?). So we're not sure yet which system to trust more when the roads get chaotic, but that's nothing to do with digital dials...

A digital speedo is still displayed, along with ancillary warning lamps, turn signal indicators etc. around the border of the Polo’s AID panel when the ‘map and no dials’ option is used. Digital speedo speedo can be seen in the bottom right in the display - shown in the YouTube video at the link below;

Cobblers, this is an interim model, already way better than analogue. Sure the next golf will be better, but I’m well happy with mine for many years to come. My first purchase a mini van in 1965 with one big centre dial and string to open the doors, sliding windows. So you won’t see me whinging about much apart from build quality.

Well compared to what the Cupra is getting in the new year I'm a little disappointed. I'd of liked the full map. Hey ho, the 300bhp will sooth my dismay.

I see what you mean. That's ok.

I tell you what though... that infotainment unit! Looks as big as the 7.5 NavPro but actually still has buttons and knobs!

You can always compare your car to something else, but i'm very happy with the display.  Just think of the step up from the analogue dials on the mk7.  Coming from a mk6 i think they are great.
