Seen this from Awesome GTI as interested in little more noise over stock.
https://www.awesomegti.com/shop-by-car/volkswagen/golf-mk7/034-motorsport-res-x-resonator-delete-golf-mk7-gti/
Quick search on YT and seems to be a few videos showing improvements in sound.
Sure I've seen a few people mention they've done this on here but don't seem to see any feedback or comments about how it sounds?
Cheers

I have looked into the resonator delete quite a bit and there seems to be many mixed opinions there is a noticeable difference in sound but many do say that it also introduces drone at certain speeds so it is indeed quite hard to gauge.

My wife had a Milltek cat back exhaust on her S4 and later had the two resonators removed and it made a huge difference to the sound. Granted it was a V8 but it was really loud and was able to set alarms off on some older cars.
-
I once put a race can on my bike and for about a couple of days it was a laugh. Then the noise started to grate and I stuck the old oem one back on. That was just my bike toy, not the thing I spend my day trapped inside. I think extra noise is something I could live without...
-
I had the resonator removed from a spare I bought and it definitely makes a sound difference, a lot nicer than the Soundaktor. Cant say I've noticed much in the way of drone, only in uphill under heavy load conditions.
So I had it done to my original exhaust too and have the spare up for sale on ebay and in the Classifieds on here.

Guess each to their own! I wouldn't have a bike again with a std exhaust. Cars are different, as like you say if it's an everyday tool you don't always want the extra noise on certain journeys - I think that's why the factory switchable exhausts are so good. For me, the GTI is just a bit too quiet and lacks the noise that a fast hatch should make.

I've had an email from Awesome GTI and sounds like it's reasonably straight forward to fit although some cutting involved. Might do a little more research before ordering.

I've never had a bike with a standard exhaust. I even had just a coke can on my GSXR7/11

My wife has been driving the GTI. When the car starts, the rumble is really noticeable inside the house. Then I notice the sound again as the car moves off. Then again when it is accelerating down the road.
When I hear the sound, I don't think, "wow, that really sounds like a sporty car!" I think to myself, "I'm too old to have a car that sounds like a boy racer!" :embarrassed:
Has anyone figured out if the Performance Pack exhaust generates more rumble. I certainly don't think my car needs any more exhaust noise. But everyone different.

I'm with you, nothing really wrong with the sound of the standard exhaust to my old ears.
I remember thinking the car was a bit muted when I first got it but when I went into the car park beneath my local Tesco and opened the windows, I was pleasantly surprised by how good it sounded.
Not as good as a MK 5 GTI but good all the same.
I'm 54, so boy racer/dickhead sounds aren't what I'm after

So everyone that has a loud car is either a boyracer or a dickhead?

I've been contemplating this mod myself but the more I think about it the more it would probably annoy me on the motorway. My PP car is now over 60,000 miles and the exhaust is much more noticeable.

Same for me. The other thing though is most of the time when you are driving you have the windows closed and the radio on so I'm not sure what the point is? I don't really want to draw too much attention. Mind you, doesn't stop me eyeing up some of the fancy looking sports exhaust systems

Well, if you buy an expensive Jag sports model or Aston or whatever, it has an exhaust note and it pops and spits.
If your car doesn't pop and spit is it inferior?
If you can make it pop and spit does that make it equivalent?

The BCS exhaust system is probably the best option, if you drive it normally it sounds normal. If you plant your foot it sounds louder. Not as cheap as chopping the middle silencer though!

Er, yeah
And I never meant 'boy racer' or 'dickhead', they tend to be one and the same

Don't even know whether its exhaust noise I'm after, as I've heard aftermarket exhausts for the GTi and the don't sound great. Maybe just want some more engine noise. I was originally thinking about a CAI but heat soak is an issue with most and air getting into the take is a problem as well.
A mate just collected a new C43 Coupe and the exhaust noise and sounds form the bi-turbo V6 are fantastic, He does have have the optional AMG switchable exhaust though.

I've been on the same journey, fitted a CAI and you can hardly hear a difference! I think a downpipe is the way to go but it'll mean upgrading to Stage 2 software, at least that's what APR suggest.
Take a look on YouTube there are some standard exhaust clips with upgraded downpipes, more burble and pops...

Resonator delete IMHO is a cheap if slightly crude way to increase exhaust sound, cabin drone would be my main concern, especially under load up hills etc. Maybe okay if you don’t plan any further exhaust mods.
Add a dp or rear box at a later date and you’ll soon be digging out your resonator to refit.
I like the look and sound of the PP system, maybe not so much from inside the cabin. But listening outside when I got a friend to drive my car it does really does sound very good.
If I was to change any part of the exhaust system it would be the downpipe. BCS Powervalve in the UK make a great Downpipe with a 200 cell cat. No cel light even without a tune due to the mini 200 cell cat fitted to the oxygen port sensor. No TD1 as not part of the ECU and also good for up to 20-30 lbs more power.
Only snag is it’s a lot more money at £795 delivered.

That's pricey!
Not sure if the PP has a different exhaust at all but sure someone in the know would be able to tell. Mine sounds good outside, especially once warmed up and quite loud DSG noises on the upshifts. So it probably just some intake noise I'd like more of. Need to consider options.

Yes, start up is quite loud outside my std GTI, can't imagine it's any different to PP car but I'd say its very subtle and not really loud/shouty as current performance cars go. I guess that's why lots of people buy the Golf. Having had mates pop round recently including an RS6, RS3 (this is probably one of the best sounding engines sub £50k), new M3, M4 Competition, C43 Coupe and a rather lucky mate who has an Aventador SV, the Golf sounds almost hybrid like.
Maybe I just need need some friends with 1.0 cars instead!
-
BCS do a Res delete for the R, with the addition of the helmholtz resonator you get a great sounding exhaust without the drone.
Had mine on my R since the start of the year and one of the single best mods made to the car, not cheap mind but you get what you pay for.

I'd say most people buy a 30k Golf because they don't have upwards of twice that money to spend on a car.
Have you thought about one of these?

No ECU mods, no TD1 flag, no warranty issues, no MOT failures :D

That's quality Fred but a complete waste of money as the GTI already has one fitted as std, its a call a Soundaktor.
Ps If you like the noise then that's great for you. Nothing to do with how much you can or can't afford. Not sure why you're commenting on a thread that's about making more noise though. You're happy with the standard noise so not sure you'll be much help on this one.

Thats an external sound box, not an internal one.... like the old Sport and Sound you used to be able to get on a GTD :D
I remember seeing one on Pimp My Ride, a Pinto with a V8 sound.

What's the thing that's piped into the car in Sport mode these days? Thought that was Soundaktor?

I have just this weekend had the resonator removed from mine and I'm happier with the car now. Had been looking at loads of videos on youtube and decided to pull the trigger. The garage made a clean job of it and I retained the resonator in case I didn't like it and wanted to swap back. That said, I wish I'd done it sooner tbh - a great improvement for the money!
No drone at M'way speed but is noticeably louder above 2500rpm and this makes the DSG pops more pronounced. It's in no means obnoxious IMO but I did come from a GSXR600 with an Akrapovic exhaust system!

You're right Jim, it is a soundaktor and the kufatec thing that dubber36 li ked is the external sound and you'll hear it in a few weeks when I'm up at your with mine.

Friend of a friend had it done on his VRS and it sounded great but his was a manual.

Which one have you had fitted?

Sorry Jim, been a bit absent on the forums over the festive period.
The one on ebay from Zaustworx, £60 I think I paid. Had my local garage fit in when I had some other bits sorted.
Still enjoying it, it's an improvement over the more refined stock GTI exhaust but at the end of the day, it is still a 4 pot turbo so it's never going to sound like a VVT engine approaching it's redline!
My decrease in average MPG backs this up too, often find myself shifting a bit higher up the rev counter just for that louder DSG pop. How childish!!
