Title: App Connect MK7 GTD
Post by: Jeni_R_ on 02 November 2017, 12:06
So as per other posts i have seen my car has this option on the infotainment system but says to call and get a code

Is it any good ? how much does it cost and does it have to go into the garage to get it done ?

Thanks

I think it's standard equipment now, but I know when I ordered my current GTD early 2016, it was something like a £150 option, and if you didn't select it then late 2016 builds could have it activated as you say via a registration code available from the dealer.

Is it any good ? We'll for me yes, but your mileage may vary. I tend to listen a lot to my in car music on either Spotify or particular web radio stations via tune in radio (which I tend to listen to by Android Auto). Works very well for me and gives me all the cover art / track info etc. and looks nice.

I know you can do these via bluetooth but for me that's a bit more faf. I also really like the Car Net and find it really useful for Petrol prices and car park locations when traveling.

Suppose it all depends on how much money they want to activate it, but I'm glad I ticked that box.

It can be retroactivated by the dealer, depending on the MIB2 unit you have (can’t be done on MIB1).  Some units have a ‘voice’ button and some a ‘mute’ button and it can only be done on the units with the voice button. It’s been the topic of very lengthy discussion elsewhere. Costs for dealer to do (if able) is around £230.

I'd say worth it if you are an android user and use navigation a lot. Less so if you don't....

It's better navigation on offer from Google or wayez than Vw, even with carnet traffic data.

I use app connect all day every day.

All of that and the above is me over the back currently listen to spotify via bluetooth which is a pain in the rear sometimes AND i dont get the artwork which bugs me !!

Any idea what the cost is for it ? my car was built April 2016 i believe so sure it has the right stereo i dont have the fancy nav just the standard one

Did yours come as standard/spec order or added at later date ?

AFAIK (stand to be corrected) all the MIB II units built after a certain date have app connect (android Auto Apple Car Play and Car-Net) built in, but unless you paid in advance or have it as standard equipment, when VW are coding the infotainment system at build time, this feature isn't activated (it's hidden).

The code is required for a VW dealer to connect the car to their VAS system and connect to the factory and download the "feature" onto the car using the code purchased. I don't think any other hardware or software needs to be purchased.

From the current VW brochure it states

App-Connect function which includes three pieces of software:
MirrorLink, ‘CarPlay’ (Apple) and ‘Android Auto’ (Google). App-
Connect mirrors specific apps for Android smartphones and
Apple iPhones on the touch-screen of Composition Media,
Discover Media or Discover Pro. The MirrorLink function mirrors
the mobile phone’s screen on the display of the radio system
or the radio-navigation system.

I solely use App-connect (CarPlay), pretty much never use the other in-built system at all.  It’s a good feature.
