Car went into VW dunfermline today to get the noise at rear checked needless to say no wee hills to show the tech what i was on about so left the car got a call few hours later to say heehaw found but all aspects of the car checked over and nothing found to be amiss
The service lady was lovely so defo recommend to any local owners she didnt charge me the diagnostic £89 nor the £12 insurance for courtesy car said if i have any more concerns just to pop back
On another note how do i get my rear indicators to do the knightrider dance as opposed to standard ?
Hope everyone is well ! Jen x

If its the swiping motion you mean then that's std on the Mk7.5 and according to a recent thread, an expensive retro fit to the Mk7.

I think you need hardware.

Knight Rider lights were not sweeping like the MK7.5, they were alternating left and right no?

I think what the OP means is this mod, which doesn't need any expensive hardware, other than a cheapo OBDEleven dongle (or ask soemone with one to do it as favour:

A 1 min mod really:

Adaptation -> Channel: (4) Leuchte17TFL R BLK SRB3TFL R BLK SR KC3-Lichtfunktion A17: Set = Blinken rechts Dunkelphase. (Default: Blinken rechts Hellphase)
Tried it on mine and was funny but I want to check whether it is legally ok before I leave it permanently on.

Anyone know if this is this a legal mod ?

You can do the alternate blink thing with a software change, that's easy/cheap and probably legal if for not other reason than plod probably wont know the difference now everyone's indicators are dancing.
I do know what you mean about indicator envy though Jeni.... when I first saw the Audis doing this I was soooo jealous!
Not sure I was jealous up to the point of 800 quid, but I was jealous.
-
This was asked a few weeks ago on the "UK MK7 Golf R Owners Group" Facebook site and an MOT tester popped up quoting chapter and verse from the regulations and he says, yes it is legal.

I think you can't do Adaptations and definitely not Long Coding in the standard app so it's mostly for reading and clearing fault codes which is probably only 10% of what it can do on the Pro mode. Not sure though I got Pro since the beginning and it's by far the best money I 've spent on the car. PRO mode basically offers everything I was using in VCDS (adaptations, long coding, faults, and even live data) in a much more intuitive environment, without the trouble of carrying laptops with me and at a fraction of the VCDS cost. If you want to try out different tweaks like you seem you do, I'd say buy PRO version + dongle and enjoy. I honestly think OBDEleven might have well killed the enthousiast's market share of Ross Tech (VCDS).

'I'd say buy PRO version + dongle and enjoy' whats the dongle for ? is it a requirement and where would you buy from doesnt look like OBD11 is sold second hand on ebay its all new items

I think you're a bit confused so: To get access to the OBD port in the first place (that's how the system works) you need an actual device/dongle to connect to it. That costs 40eur. Now once you've bought the dongle you have two options in terms of the app: Either the Free version that you simply download free of charge but has the limitations I mentioned above. Or, you can buy the Pro version for an extra 25eur and unlock full capabilities. So the choice is either 40 eur or 65eur, there is no 0 cost option.
Doubt there would be used dongles on ebay. Even then the licence/Pro app is not transferable so you'd save what, 10-20quid on the dongle? but still have to pay the 25eur for the PRO version activation. Save your time and buy directly from here:

Thanks

Absolutely. I mean you need to pay already £40 to get the device in the first place with very limited functionality, and you can fully unlock it with another 22? makes sense in my eyes.
The app is very well thought out. It keeps records online through the account you create so you can always see and revert from whatever changes you did, at what mileage and which values you changed in specific etc without having to worry about keeping track yourself. And since they are saved online you don't have to worry about deleting the app from your phone or your phone being replaced or lost either. Just install it on another android device, use the registered account to log-in and you're back where you left it. Absolute peach.

No need to remove it for dealer visits Jeni, just turn it off and leave it in the little cubby box and cover it with a duster.
You can get a harness for the indicators to do this https://youtu.be/GUS0ZPa_XFQ
Takes 2 minutes per side to fit and I could be persuaded to sell mine.

what i think i will do is order the OBDeleven initially and footer about with the settings see how i get on thanks though

Re the dynamic rear indicators, you need to be aware of the fact that as the pre-facelift MK7's only used 2 LED elements (one in the outside light and one on the inboard light in the boot lid) for the indicator strip, that you can only at best get a two step indicator function.
Certainly not the smooth sweep like Audi's and the face-lifted MK7.5's as they use individual LED elements along the length of the light that can be activated independently given that smooth flow. The only way to emulate that is to retrofit the MK7.5 rear lights (quite expensive methinks).

Let's try again shall we, this place will sell you the lights or a harness to adapt your existing lights.
OBD Eleven?
I think you need hardware.
Have a wee lookey at these;

Just make sure if you buy anything from abroad it's compatible with right hand drive.
Alternatively this place are a bit far from you but will supply and fit;-

I agree on that. The sweeping is definitely cool but other than that the rest of the light design is too ordinary. By going with just 2 continuous straight lines along the width instead of some more bespoke pattern like in the MK7, in the night it could be a Passat, a Leon, a BMW or a Merc. On the contrary I like how you can tell a MK7 GTI/R from a distance.

I must be in a minority of not liking sweeping indicators at all, either the Mk7 OBDeleven/vcds tweak or the facelift indicators. I think they look naff.
Agree about the new light design being too generic now, nothing to set it apart from a big standard golf really and even less so with an R. Also prefer the Mk7 rear lights to the facelift rears. VW, Audi, Seat all look the same now.

I couldn't agree more Rebecca. If anything I find sweeping indicators a bit distracting and ultimately rather pointless.

+1 for preferring the more distinctive design (IMO) of the rear lights on the mk7 over the mk7.5 version. If I had a mk7.5 GTI/GTD/R I wouldn’t be unhappy with the rear lights, it’s just that I prefer those on the mk7.

Your not going to want the Mk8 then Rebecca as guaranteed sweep lights and digital dash which you hate as well. Reckon this might be your last golf
-
I was never really a fan of the Mk7 rear lights, VW was using blocky LEDs at the time other manufacturers were using nice continuous strips of LED. Made them a bit old hat even when they were new. The Mk7.5 has addressed this and uses less blocks and had a nicer appearance, in my opinion of course.
The sweeping indicators are possible a bit pointless but also pretty cool. I wouldn't go to the hassle of retro fitting them to a car that didn't have them in the first place though.
I think maybe Merc have some of the best rear lights. And their running lights are great with the way they fade on and off.

Haha, I very much doubt that Craig. I think the sweeping led indicators look a bit naff but I don’t hate them. I just prefer what I’ve got atm. Similarly I’m underwhelmed by the digital dash and think there’s better currently out there, but I don’t hate it and it’s the way it’s all going so that’s that. I’m not one to eschew new developments (moved to a DSG years ago in 2008) or new tech, but at the same time I won’t run just to keep up with it because you can’t, so with respect to cars, my philosophy is to thoroughly enjoy what I have at the time, I’ll get to the next thing when it’s right for me, and will hopefully enjoy it at that point for what it is and of its time. Being honest, as it stands I overall prefer the Mk7R to the facelift 7R because it has aesthetics that appeal to me more. By the time the mk8 comes about the digital dash should hopefully look a bit better, and I’ll take whatever form the indicators come as, and the rest of the car too. And if none of it is working for me, then I’ll look elsewhere, but I’d lay money on my next car being a Golf.

Have you actually been up close and personal to a 7.5? Have you went to have a good look at one in a showroom. The dash is far better than perhaps it looks, the front DRL’s are much nicer than the original, the standard seats are smarter and all round it’s just tidier than the MK7. Also that the radar is hidden is much better looking. Definitely a subtle but big improvement

I think Mercs have the absolute worst lights!
They look like strips of neon pink lipstick and are way to curvy. Not a very good look if you’re a bloke.

I prefer the look of the lights on the Mk7 over the solid type on the Mk7.5
This guy has proper sweeping indicators https://youtu.be/wib8HunhzLE
Your not going to want the Mk8 then Rebecca as guaranteed sweep lights and digital dash which you hate as well. Reckon this might be your last golf

Yes, I have been up close to a facelift car. I looked at one in the showroom when my car was in for service and I’ve seen a few out and about on the roads, including a White Silver R I see about regularly. And overall I prefer the original mk7. That’s not a criticism of the facelift, it’s just personal preference. Sorry. I think the original double DRL’s are nicer and prefer the rear lights too. The raked style of the facelift DRL’s are more contemporary, but also more generic, less distinguished, looking, and though your car looks fantastic in those pics, your close ups of the drls just serve to confirm how much I prefer the originals. The front of the facelift 7R looks more aggressive which is welcome, as the original is not agressive enough (though it looks more agressive in the flesh than in pics) but with that agressiveness comes a lot of glossy black plastic which I’m not personally keen on. I like the fact the radar is now hidden but like the new badge (into which it is now incorporated) less than the original. I think the rear lower bumper of the facelift looks too fussy. I like the perforated leather seats of the facelift, the 7R leather is pretty mundane so that’s a welcome change, and agree the digital display is better in the flesh than in pics, but, it’s still lacking imo, compared to some other versions of digital dash. So there’s pluses and minuses with both, but aesthetically speaking the original 7R appeals to me more. Aesthetics are subjective!

We will need to agree to disagree on this one. For a comparison black v black I know which one i prefer

As said, aesthetics are entirely subjective. The design works on both, but what appeals is dependant on your own aesthetic likes/dislikes. It really doesn’t matter who prefers what, it is what it is, and all that matters is you like your own car. It’s interesting to chat about these things and I don’t really seeing it as agreeing it disagreeing, just different t perspectives and personal taste.

Not sure I can see what you mean on that one I'm afraid

I think he means the rear lights, to me they look more pink than red.
