Thought I'D give all you tear-asses a good laugh.... Iam 63 years olld My 25 year old son recently wrote his xr3 off and asked me to look for a car for him..Years ago I had a Jetta gli and loved it,so I told him I'd look for a golf gti for him (he knows nothing about cars or sod all else except booze and crumpet).
Anyway I had a look on e bay and spotted a 1997 16v owned by a middle aged woman. New tyres , new m.ot ,5 door,92,000m,all the service history from new..She had bought a newer golf.
This'll do for bollocky I thought and got it for £1800..In her e bay ad the owner had said cash on delivery "subject to inspection" so I thought if it's a wreck she can keep it.
Off I went 200 miles on the train (£49 fare rip off) .When I saw the golf gti 16v I was pleasantly suprised ,it was o.k.The engine bay was a bit dusty but the oil was clean and inside the oil cap the cams looked like new.The only thing wrong was the passenger door electric (leccy)window.
Cor he'll love this I thought and couldn't wait to get in and have a drive.".Do you want a coffee" said the fair maiden.".No thanks" said I ..I couldn't wait to get behind the wheel.
Anyway off I went and onto the motorway like a teenager..The car was missing a bit and I thought I don't want this to pack up on the motorway and have to explain to the police how this was my wifes car and I'm covered by my van insurance.
Into the sevices and up with the bonnet off with the distributor cap (dizzy cap), the rotor arm was well furred up.gave it a rub on the kerb and all was well.I hadn't had a snack or drink for hours but still I could't wait to get back on the motorway.
I haven't enjoyed a journey so much for years, what a car ,the engine is so smooth and i covered the 200 miles in no time ,keeping within 5 mph of the speed .The exhaust not is fantastic .Every time I saw another Golf I was checking what it was,if it wasn't a 16v I had a feeling of superiority .
I got home and told my nissan micra driving wife what a fabulous car it was to drive."I don't like that red 16v badge on the front" she said ..."what ?" I said "that's the first thing us racers look for".
On the phone to the boy."I don't want that,I don't want silver ,Iwant a 3 door" SLAM ,GOES THE PHONE..I'm keeping it...you're not said she..Iam...i can't drive that.... Anyway I've changed the insurance from her Micra and now you can all call me ..Jonny gee with the 16v..I'm waiting for the postman to bring me my "crystal clear indicators and spots" and then I'M off fishing..I'll keep you in touch if you're interested

-
Welcome jaygee!
At last someone older than me around here!! I relinquish that honour to yourself!
Hope you have many more miles of happy motoring! Yes that grin is hard to get off the face aint it!

Thanks for the responses guys(that's trendy for boys and girls) I smile to myself because I was exactly the same as all you when I was young ,then it was motor bikes and then in the early sixties we all had minis ,double strength valve springs twin carbs ,then to get wide wheels we took off the original wheels and put them back on back to front so they stuck out beyond the wheel arches.
Anyway back to the 16v ,I've got my clear spot and indicators off e bay (£42)to replace the tatty ones that are on it now,I've also put new number plates on it...It had one or two little rust bubbles and stone chiips but I've managed to touch them up ,not too good but if I keep the car I'll spray them in...The inside is like new ,the only problem is the passenger side electric window. How can I test if it's the motor or just a loose connection.
I,ve also put a new distributor cap and rotor arm on it..
I went for run in it (can't call a car like this HER ) and found myself opening the back window to see if I could hear the lovely growl from the exhaust..Went into a garage for petrol and felt very self consies (got a spell check on here ) driving what is basically a young mans car.I don't suppose anyone took any notice but if I had seen an old git driving such a car I would have said to the wife "look at that pratt".. :embarassed:
I have been winding my son up ,keep sending text messeges ...electric sun roof..abs..air con ..all that his heap of shyte xr3 aint got ..Its been declared a write off ,he's been paid out .The boot lid is stuck open and bumper bashed in.He turned his nose up at the 16v and reckons his mate can put his car right for £600 ...Its a J reg worth about £300 and some girl carved a rude word into the bonnet with a nail file.I told him thats a good idea ,get it fixed for £600 and you'll get 300 quid for it..He told me "eff off Alf Garnett"...Thank god he lives 200 miles away...One day I'll put his mobile number on here and you can all send him some tasty texts.......My son in law with his Porsche Cayenne..that's another story.... all the best ,jaygee with the 16v
What a great site this is.....for us Gti boys
-
just wait till his rusty ford is fixed and give him a little ass whooping on a nice dual caridgeway
-
Welcome to the site " You Old Dubber !!!"
Great to see someone else in the forum that's older than me ( apart from Len )
I've been thinking lately that maybe I'm getting too old to be enthusiastic about VWs but you've renewed my faith to carry on !
Hopefully I'll still be running dubs in 20 years time like you .
Oli
-
Running around in a 16v Golf GTI seems a pretty cool thing to do at any age if you ask me, just dont tell Len that I said that !  I'd never criticise the old school fords as I've always had a soft spot for the earlier escorts and fiestas  but you're son is flogging a dead horse with his by the sound of it and you can tell him from all of us on here he's an ungrateful %$^&£"D !
Not everyone will read this post so I'd say that your question about the leccy window would be best having it's own thread either in the mk3 section (here) or in the garage section.
-
pmsl 'J' reg, it's even a pile of toid mk5 escort, probably the worst car ever made, i could've nearly forgiven a nice tidy mk3 xr3i just for nostalga you must understand, but a mk5....lololol, get him on here to be educated......kids..
-
Ah ! It's not even a mk3 xr3i ! :embarassed: What a waste of fooking time trying to get that back on the road !
-
its an xr3 for christ sake! why would you get it back on the road anyway? theres millions of the rotting pieces of crap all over the place, just waiting to be written off!
-
Yes it is COOL gibby!
And I for one intend to continue doing what I am now! At least for another 10 years too!!!
Just as an aside - I am going back to IBIZA next year! Either with the family or my PR friend from Tenerife! Coz I missed Pacha and Space last time!
And you are NEVER too old to have fun!
-
Make sure it's Space on a Sunday Len cos it &^%*ing rocks !
-
Great read. Welcome to the forum!
Andy
p.s You sure you got your age right ? You're not actually 36 are you ?
-
You're only as old as you feel behind the wheel ;)
How can your son not be a petrol-head with a father like you? I have my old man to blame for my motoring fascination
Re the window, it is probalby a dodgy wire in the door-frame connection - is a common fault on them
-
ha ha :) what a nice story, Hopoe you enjoy the car :D
-
Mximumant..Thanks for the advice on the electric window.I took the rubber boot off of the connection in the door and gave it a wiggle but still it wont work..I'll take the door panel off later and check to make sure the motor is getting the juice.
I've sold the wifes Micra and now I'm sat here sh***ing myself as she's gone to work in the 16v.She has been driving over 20 years but she's only 5 feet tall and drives with the seat well forward ,the seat back wound back to a near lying position and a cushion at the bottom of her spine...She only thinks I'm going to take the 16v badge off the car..I told her micra was a twin cam 16v and she feels happier.I hope she don't boot it away from any lights or she'll probably finish up in the back seat.
She's hated vw since I bought a 1979 MK1 1000cc and the idle valve kept getting blocked and made it stall every time she stopped. The final straw for that paticulear car was when the clutch cable mounting on the bulkhead collapsed leaving a bloody great hole and no clutch..

if worse comes to worse get a divorce  only joking or thou i told the girlfriend i wouldn't marry her until she got a vw , but no she want a mk2 astra gti , women eh , tell your son to get a john deer as the are far better than ford
-
WTF! lol pmsl!

Just a little update on my 16v /my son story..I've got a good relationship with the little sod although at times he pees me off...He has been looking to find a 16v for under 2 grand that hasn't been messed about with ( you guys probably call it modified ). Its almost impossible to find one any where as good as mine mechanically. Although a lot of cars look good on the outside when they open the bonnet its absolutely filthy. It seems its o.k as long as it's got a fancy air filter and low profile tyres sod the service history....He rings me and I tell him how I've been roaring around the countryside in my 16v and its as sweet as a nut.
Anyway he cant see a decent late mk3 16v for less than 2 grand ,he wants a p or r reg.. He has been on the phone to his mother when I was out fishing and between them have now decided my 16v is not such a bad proposition after all. He's on the train to come and collect it at this very moment...
What shall I do for a car now?
After I have convinced the wife that an 8 valve mk 3 gti is a better buy than a late vauxhall corsa I shall start my search..I have learnt a lot about gti 's through this site and now cant wait to get my hands on a Lowish mileage 8 valve r reg mk 3 ...16 v is not a priority for me ....Can you imagine changing a gti for a bloody corsa. I made a couple of bids on e bay for a corsa to keep her happy..You know the kind of thing ,600 quid for a 2 year old car and look dis appointed when we were outbid..
I noticed the ignition light was not working on the 16v,this was traced to a dirty connection on the little wire that came from the alternator...The alternator /starter motor are original with 93000 miles they must be due for renewal soon ..i
I'm off to the station to collect Richard Head now ..Just to pee him off I'll go in
my van and wont let him near the 16v until he's got his insurance changed..If he takes the 16v home a nice fresh leg of chicken hidden under the spare wheel should smell nice in a few days when he's posing round with his p**s head mates ...IN MY BLOODY GTI 16V
I
-
pmsl, this story is great !
Tell your son to get his dirty hands off your valver and go and find his own, why is it good enough this week when it wasn't last week and just keep him squirming !
I wouldn't entertain a corsa and an 8v mk3 is by far a better bet than one of those, go for some test drives and your wife will see the difference in build quality and safety. I do think you personally will be disappointed in a mk3 8v especially after driving around in a 16v. :undecided:
-
There are quite a few nice mk3 8vs around - I saw about 10 when I was looking. Apartf from the very odd spot of rust, I think mechanically, they have lasted pretty well... And you might even find that the 8vs haven't been ragged as much as the 16vs. But... 8vs are not as quick. I'll be the first to admit it. Well, the 7th or 8th actually.
But do you wanna license loser or a car you can drive?
-
Well just dont leave this site jaygee - I dont wanna be the oldest again!!!
So hurry up and get another Gti mate. 8v if you must, but it wont be so much fun!
Dont have sons myself but my Son-in-Laws make up for that! One of em Billy - is a Golf nut and persuaded me to buy my current Golf. Glad he did!!!!
-
Well he's seen the 16v and he likes it "it looks better than it did in the picture don't it "..Then he's on the phone sending photos to all his boozing pals..."gotta go home wednesday" he says "going to see Audio Bullys in London on Thursday"..Thank god for that I thought he was here for the week...He's only been here a few hours he's nearly ate everything in the fridge..
I noticed my new clear lense fog light/ indicator kit is getting water in..Paid 49 quid for them off e bay..They look good but not sealed at all so I've had to take them off and put silicone round them.luckily it don't show..
Gibby ,please dont ask me to go for a test drive with my wife ,at least not with her driving it's absolute torture every gear change rams your head back against the headrest as she lets the clutch snap out too fast and never looks in mirrors worst of all she sticks exactly to the speed limit. If an ambulance or fire engine approaches its sheer panic.Luckily I don't see a lot as my eyes are closed most of the time..
.I am sure I can convince her a golf gti is the way to go .I don't mind an 8 valve as I am not that interested in speed ,more interested in looks and build quality,I also love sodding about with cars so I don't want nothing too modern.. now I'm going to watch Arsenal give Sparta Prague a good hiding.. Anyway I am sad to say Thursday the 16v will be heading south and I will be looking for another that looks just a bit smarter than the 16v..If I can I'll try to post a picture of the 16v. later on..
-
lol - Sounds like your wife is someone to not be a passenger with then.
Cool, sounds like an 8v mk3 is fine and dandy and will have everything you want out of it. Good luck in your search and keep us posted.
-
Well I'm sorry to say i have been unable to convince the wife a mk 3 gti is the way to go,she is adamant shes not having one and seeing as it is her money I have to obey..My son has buggered off with the 16v and I have been searching round for another car..No way can I convince the wife to have a mk 3 ,the main problem is that she is a number plate snob "I'm not driving around in an R reg ".To be honest I would be worried about her driving home from work as she works 10 miles away and it takes up to an hour to get home .Woe betide me if her car was to pack up in thre middle of traffic..
I have reluctantly settled on a Nissan Almera 1.8 sport Y reg..36000 miles all the extras you could want F.S.H all for 3 grand..I know it wont be a spot on a VW but the wife likes it and doesn't realise its a SPORT and 120bhp (allegedly )..IT'll be good to compare it with the 16v..It's less than half the price of a mk 4 gti so we are all happy ...
On the way home down the A1 my boy texted me to say" this car goes like sh!t"..Later on he phoned me to ask if a speed camera has to flash..I told him the cameras on the A1 in bedford are the digital ones and dont flash .He wouldn't tell me how fast he passed one at but as the car was still in my name it'll be me who gets the ticket..The wife only thinks I'm gonna take the rap..
I'm supposed to be picking the Almera up tomorrow so I'll let y'all know how it goes...
The last words I said to my boy before he left in the 16v was "can't you see what a prick you look driving with the seat so low "
Went to Skegness at the weekend and sat on a seat near the seafront.Me and the wife had a good laugh watching all the boy racers with the noisy exhausts roaring up and down the seafront..you know the types ,novas ,saxos, old astras loud music, baseball caps and trying to look hard normally with a spotty schoolgirl by their side...I would bet one in ten cars in Skegness on a sunday is a boy racer, still they aint doing any harm, but why sit so low..It's the same as school kids ,they all carry their back packs with both straps or just one strap depending on the area.Still why do all old men wear flat caps and take the pee........
-
a number plate snob????
get her a private plate and be done with it!!!
-
i'd divorce her now the kids have gone n get a vr6
-
Oh well jaygee, at least you tried....but an Almera ! How dull are they !
You need to stick around though as I've enjoyed this little story  and you could always pinch the valver back off your son.
-
Am I peed off or what..........Got up this morning to go and get the Almera, you all know what it's like, can't wait to drive it read all the road tests etc Told all the family what a bargain it is..Over excited even at my age.
The guy who I was buying it from seemed a genuine chap and assured me everything was fine with the car and it was mint.(I hadn't seen it as he's 100 odd miles away.
I had changed my insurance and was raring to go..I said to the wife I'm just gonna check this car to make sure it's paid for (having had a narrow escape once before)..I ran an HPI check and the bloody thing has only been an insurance write off and repaired..I rang the guy and told him what I thought .He swore he had no idea and had used the car for two years..He said he was going to take the car back to where he got it from,I just slammed the phone down.Apparently it's not illegal to sell these cars as long as they are repaired to a certain standard...
Anyway i thought sod it and decided that as I wont be driving the car that much and its mainly for the wife to get back and forth to work I'll get her a standard Almera from a Nissan Dealer which is what I've now done..Its a 1.5s and she'll be pleased its a 53 plate..can you believe I paid 5500 quid for it..it is shiny though..I'm gonna pick it up after the first of november so I wont waste a month on the new road tax. And yes you are right lads it is a very dull car but cheaper than most and more reliable made in Sunderland, hope it's better than their football team. And it's got a 53 plate....
-
Oh Dear! Bloody Women eh!
I just hope your Son appreciates the 16v
Keep us up to date on the Almera - coz I'm sure it will go wrong soon!
-
No jaygee, dont do it ! For £5500 you could probably pick up a decent mk4 for that, not even a GTI, maybe a nice little 1.6 run around on a newish plate !
The Almera will be reliable I'm sure, but they are dull and they don't even look nice ! You're missus wouldn't wear shoes if she didn't like the look of them would she, so the same principle should apply to a car.
Lucky escape with the sport one though, good job you checked it out. Phew !
-
you can get an early 1.8T mk4 GTI for that money, christ for a few hundred quid more you can buy mine.. and it blows mk3 16valvers into the weeds.. well over 200bhp on tap, with a switch to put it down to 165 for when the lady drives it
-
^ a mk4 is still too old dude... ;)
-
I don't like mk 4 golf .They are too many around. They all look the same to me. I would only want a mk 3 ..I've still got my silver 03 astravan and it's in near mint condition .It's a tdi and goes ok so I wont be driving the Almera much and still got something to fiddle about with....I liked the mk 3 because they look really good when all the wheel arch protectors and all the other plastic was properly back to blacked..VW designers certainly done us proud when they brought the mk3..................Mk4 ...2 a penny.
-
Big up the Mk3 then! But you are preaching to the converted here mate!
I do hope you let your wife read all of this thread! She might just change her deluded mind!
Sorry no offense meant!
-
Fair do's jaygee, fair do's. I hope your wife gets really bored of the almeria very quickly so that you can remedy this disastrous situation.
Good luck anyway.
-
WELL, got the Almera 1.5................WHAT A HEAP OF CARP..
In my time I have had a lot of cars/vans and have never been so disappointed with any as I am with this Almera (that includes a Morris Marina).Without exagerrating it's like driving a sponge. You put your toe down and nothing happens it's no better than a 1 litre car and it's supposed to be a 1.5...The only thing in it's favour is that it don't look too bad as it's the new model with the big back lights and modern front lights..Why nissan moved the radio aerial from the back ( like vw )to the front I don't know as it looks out of place, and too long..
The thing is less than 2 years old and already i've spotted some rust coming through from the inside of the rear wing and the rear bumper is out of line ..I've only driven it back from the dealer and it's going back there on tuesday to be fixed..The wife aint had a go yet as she works in daytime and after driving more than 20 years she don't like driving in the dark.....I know she wont like driving it as the dashboard is too wide and leaves you sitting too far back from the screen..
I came back with the car and can only describe my feeling as physically sick and it cost over 5 grand...My diesel van goes much better... what a mug
-
Feel for you mate, really do
A lad at work and his missus chopped in her Polo GTI for one of them 1.5 jobbies and he's done nothing but moan about the lack of grunt in it ever since! did say it'd hit 125...eventually
Hope you manage to get another dub soon cos I couldn't have any other car myself
-
I wouldn't entertain a corsa and an 8v mk3 is by far a better bet than one of those
Did i mis something or is this gibby sayin he likes the mk3?
-
ha ha do what you said you were gonna do ditch the mrs and get ya 16v!alot less hassle than the mrs moaning and having to take back yas jap piece of sh!t every other week.plus you can go fishing any time you like!which is where im off to now!carpy carp carp!lol easy dude!
-
I wouldn't entertain a corsa and an 8v mk3 is by far a better bet than one of those
Did i mis something or is this gibby sayin he likes the mk3?
Hmmmm, dont get too excited, I said it was a better bet than a corsa !
jaygee, dump the Almera, I told you they'd be boring ! Get a Golf, you know you want to !
-
I got photo proof that gibby LOVES Mk 3's!!!! heheheheheh!
Flog that Nissan rubbish back to that stealership and put it down to experience!
Then go get another Golf!!!
-
reliable made in Sunderland, hope it's better than their football team. And it's got a 53 plate....
Hey I am a sunderland fan!! but granted we are poor!
By the way you are a Legend!!
-
I am now at the stage where I am really peed off with this bloody Almera..I avoid driving the thing it's got a lot of really annoying faults.. The final straw was when I went into Tesco car park and some old bird of 70 was parking a similar almera and she smiled at me ..Mind you there are some advantages having a bit on the side ,especially when she takes her teeth out.
The doors are so curved that when you open them the first thing to hit anything close is the edge of the door and not the rubbing strip on the side of the door. The click click from the indicators is deafening..You have to push the remote twice to open passenger door, once only opens the drivers door, supposed to stop hijackers jumping in the passenger door.
I am trying to dis -able this as I might get rid of the ole woman and the Almera together.
The drivers seat is too far back it's like driving from the back seat ...........I could go on but it only depresses me.
My latest thing is to keep stopping at car lots and showing the wife all the different we could have got for the price of the almera....The only time I enjoy anything Almera related is looking at the owners club website and seeing 'em all trying to big 'em up....I'll go on and tell 'em what I think......aint heard much from my son since he took the 16v only one day he rang to say the power steering seems heavy..I told him to eff off and take it to a vw dealer ..It still rattles me to think of him and his p*ss head mates all roaring round in my car..
-
legendary!
no offence mate but i could of though of about 50 cars that i would rather have other than an almera for that sort of money! they are built by my kind, mackems (not geordies for you uneducated people - geordies are from newcastle and mackems are from sunderland) but then again no matter what they call them they are usually pissed!!
get it traded in for something german!
lets just hope ur son doesnt crash ur valver!!
-
Get the golf back and give him the Almera
-
I get the feeling that this here Almera is not going to last too long. :undecided: Keep us posted jaygee and just get the valver back off your son as I get the feeling he's not appreciating it and ragging the @rse off it.
they are built by my kind, mackems (not geordies for you uneducated people - geordies are from newcastle and mackems are from sunderland)
Now now, Neaty, we're not all stupid you know, some of us know all about the mack 'em and tak 'em story.
-
I've got a good photo of my boy with the vw (I feel a pr*ck calling it a valver).I use this photo as the wallpaper on the computer. How can I get the picture onto this site..
I'M off to a model shop in Skegness today to see if they've got any good models of vw's that I can make, like the old airfix ones..sad aint it
Did the same thing when I stopped riding motorbikes .I missed them so much 30 years later I bought a BMW when I sold it some pratt came to look at it ,I let him ride it and he dropped it,turned out he was a copper with no insurance...He bought it though and then had to get it repaired...
I might start to sabotage the almera so it plays up when the wifes driving.A bit of wet paper under one of the plug leads should get her a few miles away before it dries out and starts missing..........Better go now she's just got up...she looks really cute first thing in the morning !!!!!!!!
-
To post pictures you can either load them into the gallery, click the gallery link below the search bar, or you could sign up on www.photobucket.com (its free) and upload pics into there and then copy the third text field below the pic and copy it into this thread and it should display the picture.
I'm sure trim is going to start falling off that Almera soon !
-
Now now, Neaty, we're not all stupid you know, some of us know all about the mack 'em and tak 'em story.
ah well good to hear, but alot of people stereo type us to all being gerodies, it doesnt really bother me tho to be honest - being living in the north west for 15 years but i just like to make a point!
-
The wife has been using the heap of crap for work for a week and she tells me the battery light keeps giving the odd split second flash..god knows why..I can't even find the enthusiasm to lift the bonnet.. I know the engine was washed before we got the car so probably something to do with water getting in somewhere..
My boy is very quite about the vw so must be going o.k ...Little sod is too quiet ,he usually rings a couple of times a week...
When my wife gave birth to him he was so ugly .The first time she brought him home I thought she had left the baby at the hospital and brought the afterbirth home..
