Hello,
Appreciate there is a recent thread about sourcing discs and pads. I’m needing Discs and Pads soon, but I’d rather get them supplied and fitted. The VW fixed price deal is about £260 for front or rear discs and Pads.
Is there any other options out there. I’m based in Inverness,
Best Regards,

How have you worn out rear discs and pads? Christ they should last an eternity the amount they are used.
I would try to find a good independent if they need doing as dealers are always well over priced compared to them. It is a simple job and any garage will be able to do it.
-
Problem is they don’t get used so they rust, get used, rust etc ends up scoring the discs.
-
Looking on Euro Car Parts, a replacement set (I selected Brembo, there were others a bit cheaper) came out at nearly £180 which makes the VW fitted price seem not unreasonable. There was a discount code though which brought the cost to under £110 - any local mobile mechanic would probably do both sides in an hour max.
-
Does the Mk7 tell you when you pads are shot?
The most common cause of needing new discs is running a pad worn down to the metal which scores the disk...
-
Hi Watts,
Yeah good point re price. I had priced job at Halfords and PP GTI Vented rear discs and Pads are not cheap to replace. So for a bit more may as well go VWdealer route.
Think reason for a lot of wear on rear brakes is rust, the car sits for a month or more, so the discs get very rusty, and never quite get rid of the rust on rear discs.
I have a BMW Motorbike and had to replace rear disc at 7500 miles due to pitting with rust.
-
I believe the Mk7 would have some means to indicate worn Pads. The car was recently in for a service so the pad thickness was checked then.

A few heavy braking from 60mph (ish) should clear it up. You can use the e-brake but not at low speeds as it will lock the rear up.
-
Unfortunately after nearly 4 years the rear discs are quite badly scored, the front is fine, lot of life left in Discs and Pads. Never heard of e-brake - I’ll Google it. Thanks
-
E brake is the handbrake...
-
Oops, just re read the e-brake bit, how stupid am I. I thought you meant some spray for the discs. Not sure why I thought that.

What does the MOT cert say?...if it is just "advisory" don't bother replacing until you get a Fail on them.
I had my car in for MOT & I said I'd get an advisory, & the MOT did come back with that & a price for the job, which I refused as not a "Fail".
Rears on the MK7 Golf are way over braked for what they do, so they will never get shiny & I have always had rears on my cars get scored & rusty....fronts is a different matter...fronts on the MK7 are underbraked...IMHO...
If you want to get new discs & pads get a set of plain ATE discs as these are made to very tight tolerances..& get their low dust ceramic?? pads...I have their grooved discs which work with their plain pads on the front..
PS I'm near to you & have legit VCDS if you need some work doing..

Braking heavy from 60 won't do sh!t. Mostly on the fronts.
Don't get VW to change them, they will most likely fit the same sh!t parts again. They use two suppliers, my second set (first replaced under warranty) seems to be better than first but that was only 5-10k miles ago.
I'd go down ATE aftermarket route.

Yes it does, it cleans them up nicely and is the only time I have ever got them hot as the PP is way over braked at the front. Needs to be done every couple of months

Apologies for delay in replying.
1) It was just an advisory re the rear brakes. Never thought too much about the aftermarket options, will look in to that.
2) Golfdave, I’d be interested in some VCDS Tweaks. In particular turning the engine sound thing off.
Thanks,

Thanks golfdave,
Re ATE Discs and Pads, can somebody post a link to a set. I did Google it but there’s a bewildering choice.
There seems to be quite a selection of ATE Brake parts.

PP has bigger rear discs & fronts, basically you have the whole "R" brakes system...

Have you priced them up for TPS? I get all my bits from them and they are usually very good and are obviously genuine parts.
