Just bought a 91 gti (digifant)
Managed to get it running, but it sounds like its on 3 cylinders (when you rev it it seems to improve slightly), have changed plugs, checked leads and dizzy (all seem well).
Car has sat for a while btw
I wanna clean injectors as one plug is colder (next route to check) how do you get them out and how to clean them ? (airline?).
help!
thanks in anticipation

worked out that it is firing on 4
it just has trouble revving up to about 3000 but if you hold revs at 1500 (or any other range)its fine :undecided:
someone told me it could be lift pump in tank?
any other thoughts?

It does sound like a fueling issue. Could be a blocked fuel filter, nackered lift pump or nackered main pump. When you turn the ignition only on do you hear a buzz for a second or 2 then it goes off? This should be the main pump priming. If so then it seems to be ok. The lift pump is a common problem.

thanks for repy
yeah she makes tehe buzzing noise for around 2 seconds then starts fine evey time
lift pump is £20 so will try that route first (apparently not to bad to fit im told)
thanks once again

Yeah pretty easy i think. Its in the boot, thats all i know!
-
lift up the boot carpet and/or the rear seat (cant remember exactly where it is on a MK2), its under the black plastic circle, easy :)
-
changed pump in tank butstill the same :embarassed:
anymore suggestions anyone? anyone? bueller? bueller?

you had the timing checked? air fuel mixture?
-
not checked timing or mixture (not sure how to yet) but car has been sat for a while, just thought it might be a sensor?
-
have now tried fuel filter as well and im pretty certain its not a petrol problem (feed)
what sensors are there to try (cheapest first :-))
any help will be most appreciated

only things you could check is isv and look for any leaks on the inlet manifold etc.. to the airbox and all them little pipes, but they would make it run lumpy not what your describing. if you havent had the ignition timing adjusted etc.. get it shorted before you try anything else, you said its been sitting around alot so in all honesty it could be a valve thats seized or had it so id be 100% on everything else first.
-
checked for leaks on vacuum (found 1 small but didnt sort it)
it has now passed mot and actually passed the emmission! running rough, i have now also changed lift pump and fuel filter but still same, drove it up road and its gutless and tick over is worse and now lumpy, then tried unplugging the valve (the idle stabilistation thing apparently) and it ticked over better but still wont rev responsive (it takes a while then revs to about 3000 and sounds fine with revs held). Could this be the problem or does it just deal with the tickover???
thanks in anticipation (cant wait to drive the bloody thing! cos other than this its a very nice GTI)

Take the inlet boot off and clean out the throttle body, and while you're there check round the back of the inlet there is an extra blanked off vacuum hose here that is easy to miss! I found it the other day and it was well knackered, replaced it and I finally have decent MPG!!
Your other issues sound to me like the static timing is out, mine was gutless and hesitated till I replaced the belt, tensioner & reset the timing. Now it breathes fire!

Cheers
will try all, its more off a misfire when accelerating (might be leads also?), its a game trying to find out whats at fault - the cheapest route! (what you have to buy first!!!)

might wanna change the rotor, dizzie cap, plugs and ht leads if you havent done so already there not expensive thankfully, but will rule all that out. Think you pretty much covered everything else it must be something silly cause pretty much everything else has been mentioned and i think i mentioned the leads etc already just cant be A***'d to look.
-
check the socket on the side of the air flow meter. Try unplugging the lead wait a few seconds and refit. My 91 used to do the same but would stall when ticking over (drove me crazy) found out it was the connection to the meter. Also make sure all the air hoses leading from the air box are tight and not leaking air.

SUCESS!!
Typical, I fitted new lead, dizzycap, rotor arm and hey presto! so gutted that i didnt try the obvious first :embarassed:
thanks all for your help
Excellent forum!
