So my car had the sport and sound pack which i love and so usually run around in sport mode purely for the sound  however my MPG is pretty low compared to my Cooper SD so i have changed to individual mode if i have engine set to normal and engine sound to sport can i assume my consumption will be based on the normal mode and not higher like sport ?

Forgive me for stating the obvious....
It doesn't really matter which mode you're in if you have a heavy right foot.
-
Can't say for sure as I have a GTI but the driving modes in themselves make bu@@er all difference to the economy, the post above sums it up perfectly!
-
Doesn't make much difference Jeni.
Things make a real difference to a GTD fuel economy:
1) How hard you push the go pedal - get used to following the suggested gear display and taking your foot off of the pedal.
2) Ambient temperature (below about ten degrees MPG falls 5-10mpg)
3) The usual driving in traffic.
Worst case scenario, commute to work about 5-7 miles in traffic on a cold morning. You'll get about 30mpg on that.
What sort of mpg are you getting? Have a look a the "since refuel" figure. Mine is usually about 48mpg at the moment.

I ve came from a remapped 2.0l 143 to 186bhp Cooper SD which in sport mode got 37-39mpg and in non sport mode 50-58mpg my usual commute in the morning saw me leave home resetting the AVG MPG and arriving in Falkirk 10 miles up the road usually around the 52-56mpg which is a huge difference to current my foot doesn't get any lighter/heavier i drive how i drive so not necessarily stating the obvious to be honest

I do the same commute everyday i refueled again last night and reset everything but was in a hurry when parking this morning so will have a look when i go back to the car i think i was able to reset the since start and possibly long term it was reading around 40mpg yesterday which i thought was pretty sh*t considering i drove to my grans in Fife and back on Sunday so motorway pretty much all the way
-
Also, the Cooper SD is 1250KG, the GTD is nearer 1400KG, so an extra 10% weight.
Not to mention the remap may run leaner, so might be more economical.

And what are you getting in the GTD on that run? Don't pay too much attention to the displayed mpg on either car. The only way to gauge mpg is from fill to fill noting down how many litres of fuel you fill the car with and the miles covered. Also just before you fill it the second time note down what the car says you have got mpg wise since last refill, then you will see how accurate the cars mpg is.

Thanks guys i will take this on board, makes not difference at the end of the day I LOVE HER and if she wants to guzzle juice then she can batter in my back has never felt so pain free when going over a pot hole !

Or look at fuelly.com to see what other people are getting real world?

Not sure will need to have a look when i get back to the car i was in a rush so didnt check it probably 40mpg knowing my luck :)

How long is your commute? In traffic or free moving traffic?

30 mins first 10 mins is busy road then 10 mins mway at 80mph then 10 mins slow traffic

Unless your other mileage is high annually and long distance, probably should have bought a GTI to be honest Jeni...

The lowest i do a week is 200 miles i do a lot of running around in between and 100 mile round trip at the weekend

Thats what I said!

In the year i do about 13k GTI didnt appeal due to fuel costs and road tax
-
Under the new road tax regime (new vehicles from 2017 onwards) it makes little difference and with the campaign against diesel now, the difference in fuel economy on your driving will be offset by the drop in the future value of the car.
I probably shouldn't have got another GTD myself really, but I run to about 22k'ish miles per annum, mostly motorway.
Not knocking the car, I love her, but...

Well i have her now so i need to suck it up

If it's brand new, it will not return the MPG you expect. Give it a good few thousand to loosen up, then another good few thousand to bed in and really adjust.
Loads of people with brand new cars report the same MPG problem. GTi's included, mines on nearly 50k (third owner) and in eco I can get it to return about 42mpg, and being really good with it, can see almost 500miles to a tank of fuel (99ron).
The modes do change the car slightly, but only by dulling off the response of things like the throttle pedal, steering becomes less active etc.

She has done 10k I am the 2nd owner i went down at lunch and had a look this is the readings - i refueled last night £25 shell garage £120.9.......i always tank £25 its just what i do so i know if i am spending more than that then the car is using more fuel

OK so i have worked out that £40 got me 305miles give or take
£25 in the mini would get me approx 210 miles
the first £15 in the tank on the golf i just squandered because the garage put this in i know i paid for it but they put it in so i just drove around in different modes getting a feel for the car with this £15
Can anyone who is mathematical minded work out on average what £40 has got me to the gallon 120.6 was the cost at the pump
i work it out as roughly 42mpg
the mini was getting on average 48mpg
-
To work it out you
÷ litres by 4.55 to get the gallons used and then ÷ the miles covered by the gallons used and that will give you your mpg.
-
42.9 seems about right for this time of year and the journey you describe, maybe a touch low but I expect thats because of a bit of boy racering with your new car :)
I am surprised the mini returned such high mileage tbh
I've managed 60mpg in summer heat from Switzerland back to Calais at 90mph most of the way, so it is possible :D
-
Hey Fred
I am probably still driving her like ive never driven before so getting used to it, the mini had a high bite on the clutch so i am still driving like i expect to stall at any minute with the golf, i noticed this when i jumped in the mini last night to take it down the drive and back as its been sitting for a week and my god what a difference !
I tend not to drive like a knob in the mornings not much scope for it as the motorway is quite busy and the sneaky boys in blue are always hiding around a corner  so ive been fairly well behaved :)
The mini was surprisingly good on fuel economy considering i came out a 2l petrol mazda 6 (£50PW) into the mini at £25 was a huge difference noticed almost immediately but then the mini decided to be a total d*ck and fail
-
You can get 55+ mpg in the GTD (with DSG) though that is with really looking ahead and sticking to the limit everywhere and being gentle on the throttle AND on longer distances.
On average I'm closer to mid to high 40s. My estate with the 150PS engine and felt more economical although I didn't drive any slower (at least subjectively) probably because it didn't kick down when you go near full throttle (manual gearbox).
-
Have you checked the tyre pressures since buying it??
-
36 pressure in all 4
-
I was just about to ask same question as mcmaddy. I started getting shocking mpg which was in direct in comparison to my previous car which was exact same model and even posted about in on here. Tyre pressure warning came on once for one tyre and I filled and reset but mpg still shocking, week later had to replace 2 front and mpg was back to expected levels. Just been testing my son for his driving theory and one of the questions was about fuel consumption and under inflated tyres. I was surprised at the time that one tyre being under inflated caused such a difference.
See my waffle has been superseded by your reply...all I will add is that I too had checked my pressures, discovered later the gauge was faulty!

Very informative waffle it was though so no harm done

Cheap supermarket fuel used by previous owner?? Try it with some shell vpower or bp ultimate and see if it improves any, may take about three to four tanks to help. It's also getting colder now so the mpg's will drop about 4 to 5.
-
I use shell fuel certainly not sure about previous owner last nite since fuel was 46.5mpg
-
As several have pointed out, do away with the £10 here,. £25 there.
Just fill it up, zero the trip and then when you fill it up next time, you will have done X00 miles. You can then work out Xmiles/Ylitres which will translate to MPG.
