Title: Clubsport - Creaking Bucket Seats
Post by: TurboTrev on 17 September 2017, 11:41
Unfortunately, my CS developed a creaking driver's seat (buckets) after about 1,000 miles.  I haven't taken it back to the dealers yet, but is this something that they are obliged to fix under warranty, or will it be a fight?

quiet a few German Clubsport owners have been complaining about this issue with the bucket seats for some time. One of the reasons why I went with the standard sport seats along with the fact that the armrest, sliding console cover and rear heater/ventilation plus side airbag are all omitted to facilitate the bucket seats. If I were you I would insist on getting the problem sorted with your dealer even if it means having the seat replaced which some German owners ended up having done.

All I can say is mine don't rattle so your shouldn't either, meaning I would make sure this is fully resolved at VW's cost.

Mine do not rattle, however I am not too happy with the drivers side right seat bolster as it seems to lack the firmness (packing) of the other bolsters and it already has some deep creases. Has anyone else experienced this?

One of the other lads on the forum experience a creaking seat and the dealer resolved - something had worked loose so I would take it back to get sorted.

Ours creak too, its going in for a service soon so was going to ask to look at it.

Anyone know if an official VW fix is around?

Dave

I'm not aware of a fix Dave, but there seems to be quite a few suffering the same on the German forum, so surely there is?  My fear is that VW will say creaks are normal and I'll then have a fight on my hands.  I was hoping one or two people would come forward as having it sorted out so I could use this to strengthen my position when I visit the dealership.  When is your service due?

Worth a friendly word with Recaro UK?

Do Recaro not still have a lifetime warranty?

I don't see why you're worrying about whether the dealer will fix it or not. Its under warranty. Bring the car in. Ask for a tech to come with you on a test drive. Hopefully the problem is easily reproduce on the test drive and you get a tech that's reasonably clued in. In these cases they'd usually query VW to see if it's a common/known problem and what their recommended fix is. That could be anything from a squirt of lube to replacing part(s).

I had a similar issue with my Touareg at first the front drivers seat started creaking and got it very annoying, the dealer tried to fob me off because the 10 stone supposed master Tec could not hear it until i took him out for a test drive and it creaked loudly when your weight shifted from left to right.

Dealer then changed the cage on the base of the seat and fault was cured,6 months later passengers side did the same and despite telling them what the problem was i went through the same hassle until they changed that one and now both seats are quiet.

The noise was very a loud creak and not the type of rattle/creak you would ignore, maybe the same problem with yours ? spare parts cost £400 each and was done under warranty so that is maybe why they were not keen on changing them as they would have to justify the parts cost ,not my problem i kindly explained

^^^Thanks for that.  Yes, mine is loud creaking, I will have to pop into the dealer and see what they say.

Quick update.  I have now been creak free for 2 whole weeks.  To get rid of them I pushed the seat as far forward as it would go then I jacked it up to the maximum (I always have mine set to the lowest it will go).  I then looked underneath and spray greased all of the moving pivot points (I think there were 4) that allow the seat to move up and down and hey presto, no creaking.  Whether this turns out to be a permanent solution, who knows, but I will update the thread if there is anything further to report.

Good news

My car has 750 miles now and the seat has creaked since I picked it up with 11m on The clock and is getting worse gradually

I have my seat alsmost as far back as it goes and as low as it goes (still too high - standard GTI seats much better driving position!)

I found the creaking reduced when I raised the seat by 1 pull of the height adjustment.

I will try doing this as you

Did you used white lithium grease or just ptfe spray or something?

3-in-One White lithium spray from Halfords:  http://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/grease/3-in-one-professional-white-lithium-grease-400ml

Yeah got plenty of that cheers. Ptfe bicycle chain wax is pretty good at this sort of thing too I’ll see what the access is like.

Seriously? When I was driving my sister's Clubsport I was saying that the seating was higher but I was putting it down to the feel of the seat and not that the seat was actually higher than standard, I knee I wasn't imagining it. She thought that there was no way they would have the seating position higher in the car but it is her first Mk7

I drove and ed 40 with cloth seats and one with buckets and 2 S with buckets and the normal seats are definitely lower.

I can see the bonnet in my car , I couldn’t on my mk6 or the other mk7 with normal seats as Theyre lower.

Seems to be a trait with Recaro shell seats as my clip was set high and the focus rs seats are set way too high.

Would be good if a height adjust delete kit comes available as this would lower the seat a good inch I bet.

Touch wood mine haven't started creaking yet but interesting find tt , I might just spray them anyway......I did try an rs a while ago and felt way too high even on lowest setting, better in the ed40 for me anyway although on lowest setting.

I had a test drive in a Clubsport with buckets and ended up buying a Clubsport with standard seats. I can also confirm, as others have already stated that the standard seats feel lower.

I sprayed the pivot points on the height mechanism on mine today with 3 in 1 PTFE spray and then white lithium grease over the top. Tam seat up and down a couple times to try and work it into the hinges.

Hopefully this works but I have a feeling it’s the seat back that breaks but hard to tell

Hopefully it will work.  Mine didn't particularly sound like a problem with the base, but still creak free so far (touch wood).

Squeaks and creaks can come from somewhere totally different to where you think you are hearing it so it may well be this. Hopefully it is as I hate squeaks and cabin noises and other than this the cabin is very good so far

The Recaro bucket seats in my Clubsport have creaked almost since buying the car new in March.
Drivers seat back was replaced under warranty.....I informed the garage I thought it was underneath
the rails/brackets etc...
VW insisted the seat back is the problem, so a new one was fitted (£1300 according to the vw garage)
Car  off the road for over three weeks.awaiting the parts.
Collected the car & the problem is still exactly the same.
I will lubricate the rails as I initially thought was the culprit...

Otherwise a great car.

Make sure you get the pivot points that raise and lower the base and let us know whether it works for you.

Well that sounds promising as I was sure it was the seat back also.

Would be great if it were as simple as lubricating the pivot points

I’ll see how it goes now I’ve done this

This didn’t work on mine

My creaking seems to come from the backrest

I’ll mention it when it goes in for it’s first service

Disappointed with this to be honest you would expect better

That's disappointing as my creaking also sounded like it was coming from the backrest and in the end it was there 100% of the time.  It started at about 1,000 miles from there being no creaking at all, to it creaking all of the time.  I really didn't expect the lube to work as it didn't sound like that type of noise, but I'm pleased to be able to report that I'm still creak free, shame it didn't work for you.

I’ll apply some more and run the seat up and down a few times again to try and work it in more. It does feel like it’s the backrest though.

Will the GTi seats be the same height as the R seats, as my R seats just don't go anywhere near low enough?

Master plan is for a set of Mk5/6 Recaro Wingbacks as they sit really low, this rules out the MK7 variant by the sounds of it.

Mine has creaked for months, and it drives me mad, everytime i shift it the seat, theres the damn noise.... I found a fix was to adjust the seat to a higher level and it cured , but felt the seating position was way too high for me then!!
I will try the grease fix and see what that does..

I found raising it slightly worked for a short while but it some back. I’m sure the creaking is coming from the seat back not the frame/runners on mine

Phone vw uk and local dealer and non of them had a clue and said they didn’t know of any issues with these seats

Yea same here the dealers or Vw have no clue about it, and when i took mine it, typically after driving 40 mile to my dealer the creak was not there when i was parked up!.
It is annoying, i have had the plastic trim off the back of the seat and used bits of foam to seal the edges where plastic meets plastic.. think i may be defeated on this one

I had a couple of clios with Recaros one car freaked one was fine

The one that freaked was the bracket which the backrest mounted too coming slightly loose

To access them was a pain though as the airbag covers are tamper proof

Do the panels on the golf recaro seats come off ok?

I haven't got the buckets but I have found there are a lot of creaks and rattles in the car (ED40) - bit disappointing (and annoying) to be honest.

I fixed mine, i found that it was the grey plastic on the back making a noise when it came into contact with the black glossy plastic, i got the wife to travel in the back  and she confirmed the noise, so i took the grey panels off, saw that reccaro had already put tiny pieces of sticky back cloth in here and there, so i bought some myself and lined all the edges, put the panels back in and a month later no more creaks from the seat at all...

Hi there, I got my CCS in June - I drove it a bit over the summer and the drivers seat has creaked / squeaked pretty much since I owned it.  Warranty is out shortly so I booked it in at Drift Bridge to have them take a look.  I may try the white grease trick see if that works - not the end of the world but really annoying. Car is only on 5k.

On a side note people must be coming up to 3rd yr service and MOT - where in South East is good dealership - any recommendations ?
