proud new owner of black mk6 GTi - 83k. however......1 week in EML light comes on - long story short after having 3 different independent garages look at it it needs a new cat. getting a genuine part fitted. not cheap but want / need the car to last me for a while. doesn;t appear to be many or any aftersales CATS available.
now i know why the purchase price was a grand less than market value...any opinions on this from anyone?
also my steering wheel isn't the flat bottom one. doesn;t really bother me but does anyone know if the early mk6 models didn't come with this as standard?

All UK models had the flat bottom wheel.

was it a private sale? Not a good sign if cats is knacked and steering wheel has been changed. What plate is the car on?
-
Dealership sale but ultimately traded in from private seller.
With new cat etc should be fine - annoying to have had to do work so early
With the non flat bottom wheel and new cat what are you suggesting?

A knackered cat would imply a fault further down the line. Something would have contributed to the cat failure

German cats "can" last 200,000 miles+, like Rhyso said, maybe a problem cause it or one further down the line. I would get a VW specalist to give it a full once over.
as for the steering wheel, seems a really odd one. Has it been in a crash, airbag gone off etc...

I'd be concerned with the 'incorrect' steering wheel.
It should be flat bottomed. As it isn't, it likely been changed - why? What else has been removed and changed for incorrect parts?
Would be worth looking into whether imports had no-flat steering wheels.......

update later this week. VW specialist ordered new cat from germany and before fitting it will obvs insect old one to get to the bottom of why orig cat started breaking up, will look to fix anything in relation to that - will also do paint gauge checks etc to check for any poss accident. as for steering wheel, no idea, could be a preference for non flat bottom version. car isn't an import. current wheel is working fine though and all connections to steering wheel column electrics etc is working fine. once I have more up to date info later this week will post.
